The budget meeting for the City of Salem is not being held tonight. It will be held NEXT Thursday evening at 6:00. We apologize for the error.

An accident occurred at 6:35 Wednesday evening in Dent County on County Road 5015 about three miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1997 Ford pickup driven by 16-year old Christian Kyser of Salem rounded a curve and collided with a 2001 Buick Century driven by 72-year old Shirley Tune of Salem. Tune suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by the Salem ambulance. The Ford sustained minor damages and was driven from the scene, while the Buick sustained moderate damage and was removed by Whitaker Towing of Salem.

From a field of more than 400 entries, eight Dent County students placed in the annual Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District (ORSWMD) Earth Day contest, and two additional Dent County youth received honorable mentions for their projects. This year, the district received some 300 entries into the poster category, some 101 entries into the trash art category and some 23 entries into the electronic art category. Awards and prizes are given in each category and are divided by grade level in the poster and trash art categories. In Dent County, winning entries came from Salem High School/Rolla Technical Institute and New Harmony Christian Academy students. The RTI/Salem High School student recognized for her project was Samantha Emerson, taking second place in the electronic art contest. The New Harmony Christian Academy students recognized for projects include Chaise Smith and Sidney Beyer, who were tied for first place the first grade division of the trash art contest. Isaac White took first place in the second and third grade division of the trash art contest, Dawson Thomas placed first place in the fourth and fifth grade division of the trash art contest, and Levi Hensley was first place in the eighth grade division of the trash art contest. Isaac Limbaugh took second place in the second and third grade division of the trash art contest while Kullen Myers was second place in the fourth and fifth grade division of the trash art contest. Jason Joseph, was named honorable mention in the second and third grade division of the trash art contest and Randalyn Kulp was also honorable mention in the fourth and fifth grade division of the trash art contest. Participating teachers include Sara Wells of New Harmony Christian Academy and Angie Yowell, who teaches graphic design to students from Salem High School at Rolla Technical Institute.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will hold a special meeting this afternoon at 12:30 at the District Administrative Offices. After approval of the consent agenda and bills, the Board will move into executive session to discuss personnel.

The City of Salem’s Finance Committee will hold a budget meeting, called by City Administrator Clayton Lucas, next Thursday night at 6:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the budget FYE 2013-2014. The City of Salem’s Finance Committee’s budget meeting is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their arrest reports for Dent County. On Thursday, May 16th at 10:50 in the morning, 20-year old Kyle Lackey of Salem was arrested on Dent County misdemeanor warrants for endangering the welfare of a child and violation of a child protection order on two counts. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. At 1:53 that afternoon, 48-year old Donald Kelley of Salem was arrested on Dent County felony warrants for distribution of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. On Tuesday, May 21st at 7:24 that evening, 33-year old Brienne Price of Salem was arrested on Phelps County warrants for failure to appear on a charge of driving on the wrong side of the road, no vehicle insurance, and failure to comply with driver license restrictions. She also had a Dent County warrant for failure to wear a seat belt. Price was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond.

A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held tonight at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. St. Louis left-hander Tyler Lyons had a lead before he even threw a single pitch in his MLB debut. Behind an early outburst and solid work from the rookie hurler, the Cardinals topped the San Diego Padres, 5-3, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Petco Park. Lyons (1-0) held the Padres to just one run and four hits over seven innings. Yadier Molina had four hits and knocked in a run for St. Louis, which has won four of its last six games. The Cardinals have the day off today.

St. Louis Cardinal left-hander Jaime Garcia is scheduled to undergo surgery on his left shoulder after being diagnosed with a tear in his labrum. The Cardinals have not announced the date of Garcia's surgery, but it is expected to sideline Garcia for the rest of the season. St. Louis also placed relief pitcher Fernando Salas on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer and Jordan Lyles pitched six frames of one-run ball, as the Houston Astros defeated the Kansas City Royals, 3-1, to take the rubber match of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park. George Kottaras drove in the lone run for the Royals, who had lost four straight one-run games before defeating Houston on Tuesday. Kansas City starter James Shields (2-5) allowed two runs and seven hits while striking out seven in seven innings. The Royals will start a four-game series with the L.A. Angels tonight.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that the team has signed free agent safeties Malcolm Bronson and Quintin Demps. Bronson joins after a four-year career at FCS McNeese State. Demps was fourth-round pick of Philadelphia in 2008. The club also announced it released safety Justin Glenn and cornerback James Rodgers on Wednesday.

Funeral services for Richard Hodge of St. James, age 48, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St James. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 until 7:00. Interment will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Funeral services for Deloris Coleman of Leasburg, age 77, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Friday night from 5:00 to 7:00 at the chapel. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Adams Cemetery.

Funeral services for Barbara Jean Smith, of Salem, age 79, will be Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Memorial services for Margaret Sullivan of Salem, age 87, will be held Tuesday at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the Salem Public Library or Relay For Life. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
