The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. The board heard from Vernon Holland about the improvements he is making to the house at 707 North Pershing that was on the demolition list. This house was one of five that the city was contemplating holding a public hearing on to determine if further action needs to be taken. He said that he would have the back of the home enclosed within 90 days. The board approved the request from the Current River Car Cruisers to temporarily close 4^th Street from Highway 19 to Iron Street, and Iron Street from 4^th to 5^th Streets on June 16^th for a Cruise In. The board approved the consent agenda that showed sales tax revenues for April to be $32,894.03 and that is $5,195.99 more than last month. The board heard from Alderman Bill Riley about airport leases and City Clerk Mary Happel will have to retype them and send them out this week. Alderman McDaniels asked about the new scoreboards at the city park and are operating properly. He asked about the new playground equipment and it has all been cemented in and wood chips will be put in today if possible. McDaniels says that the storm water ditch in the city park needs to be cleaned out as there is a big mosquito problem in the park. He also asked that the grass be cut in the small park on Highway 19 North before the Memorial Day weekend. McDaniels asked about getting a trailer to pull the mowers with and Street Superintendent Benny Bryson said that the street department has a trailer budgeted for next year and they would give their current trailer to the parks department. Alderman Jim Jackson asked about the pool filter and Mayor Gary Brown said that it has not yet arrived and the city was notified that it was to be delivered now on Wednesday. The pool opening date will be pushed back and at this time, the city is unsure when the pool will open. Mayor Gary Brown said that the permission was given by the fair board for the city to install the fireworks pad at The Commons. He said that electric was being hooked up to the pump station at Al Brown Fields and that the pedestrian crosswalk warning lights on Route J are functioning and have been programmed through June from 5:00 to 10:00 on nights there are ball games. Brown also said that the back gate to the city park would be open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights to accommodate the traffic from the ball games. Brown said that the Department of Natural Resources came to town to discuss the increased water testing and left pleased by the water quality from the treatment plant, but no decision on the additional testing was indicated. The board approved Bill #3097 that closed a portion of Orchard Street as requested by the First Baptist Church, and they approved Bill #3098 to rezone the property owned by Bill and Twyla Riley from residential to commercial on Pershing by a 3-0 vote as Riley abstained. The board agreed to put out for bid the cutting of the hay from the new soccer fields and also out at the airport. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.

The Forest Service proposes a set of management activities in the southern portion of the Salem Ranger District. This area is referred to as the Medley Hollow Analysis Area and it is located in Dent, Reynolds and Shannon Counties. The analysis area is just southwest of the community of Bunker, on lands administered by the Salem Ranger District. Your comments to help the Interdisciplinary Team determine the issues and develop alternatives to the Proposed Action for the Medley Hollow project are encouraged. Chris Duncan's three-run home run led the way as St. Louis crushed Pittsburgh, 9-4, in the opener of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. David Eckstein went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Cardinals, who halted a five-game losing skid with offensive fireworks. Aaron Miles finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and one knocked in, while Juan Encarnacion and Scott Rolen each had two hits, an RBI and a run scored. Adam Wainwright (4-3) allowed nine hits and two runs over 5 1/3 innings, fanning six and walking only one. He also had a solid night at the plate, going 1-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs. The Cardinals will face the Pirates again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Mark Teahen's bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning forced in the winning run, as the Kansas City Royals beat the Cleveland Indians, 4-3, in the start of a three-game series at Kauffmann Stadium. Mike Sweeney hit a two-run home run for the Royals, who have won five of six and seven of their last nine games. Zach Greinke (2-4) got the win with 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Odalis Perez yielded three runs on seven hits, with a walk and a season-high six strikeouts over six innings in the start. Kansas City activated right-hander Octavio Dotel, who had been on the disabled list with a strained left oblique since the last week of spring training, and designated right-hander Jason Standridge for assignment. The Royals and Indians play again tonight at Kaufmann Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded kicker Lawrence Tynes to the New York Giants on Tuesday in exchange for future considerations. Tynes played in 48 games in three seasons with Kansas City, converting 68-of-87 field goals and 137-of-141 PATs. His 68 career field goals rank fourth in team history.

Funeral services for Charles Daniel Dale of Salem, age 79, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Karl Ray Payne of Davisville, age 54, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Davisville.

Funeral services for John Stephen Risbeck of Rolla, age 72, will be held today at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

Funeral services for Dessie May Woolf of Salem, age 90, will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 this evening.  Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lilia Lea Elliott of Rolla, age 54, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday. Interment will be in the Ozark Memorial Gardens in Rolla.
