The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors met for the regular meeting Tuesday evening at the hospital library. In the summary of operations, Controller Becky Cunningham indicated that inpatient admissions were up for the month at 66 but inpatient census days stood at 262, which is below budget. The loss from operations for the month was $56,545, and after the tax revenue, the excess of expenses over revenues stood at $50,092. For the year, the hospital is showing a gain from operations of $427,732. There was a decrease in cash for the month of $102,277 with an ending cash balance of 3.7 million dollars. Days in accounts receivable for April stood at 49 and that is two less days than in March. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy reported that during the month, there were 772 emergency room visits with an average turnaround time of 115 minutes. Also during the month, there were 149 ambulance runs with 148 patients being assessed, 27 surgery cases, 1,914 outpatient registrations, 149 home health visits, 9,397 lab tests, 1,100 radiological procedures, 183 CT scans, 27 MRI scans, 5 nuclear med scans, 665 rehab treatments, 207 dialysis treatments and 314 clinical visits of which 129 were for podiatry. Lacy said that this flu season there were 124 confirmed cases which is the most at the hospital over the last four years. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor stated that the hospital auxiliary have raised the $6,808 to pay for the graphic design and lettering for the two new ambulances with their fundraising projects to date. Pryor said that the tort reform and Medicaid Expansion did not pass this year in the state. The board approved courtesy staff privileges for Dr. John Coleman, MD in the emergency room and Dr. Mark Clemente, MD in teleradiology. Assistant Administrator Kasey Lucas said that the hospital plans to go online with the new Critical Access Hospital software July 1st, and that the Stage 2 Package for the electronic medical conversion will cost approximately $144,000. Lacy indicated Telehealth visits have increased to 46 in the month of April from 32 in March. She went on to report that her committee for the Community Needs Assessment will meet again and pick three priorities from their long list. The hospital will then have to implement the priorities and then measure their impact on the community. Board member Joe Brand reported that he had seven people who expressed interest in being on the advisory board for the foundation program. Pryor said that Kasey Lucas has been nominated for a position on the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks Board. The board approved the non-budgeted purchase of a Lennox 5-ton Air Conditioner for Surgery from Victor Heating and Cooling for $4,245. The board also approved to purchase the software from CPSI for the Health Information Exchange at a cost of $35,000 from the fiscal year 2014 budget. Lucas said a down payment of $3,500 had to be made to schedule the installation and that won’t be until September. If the hospital installs the system this year, they will save $175,000 in installation costs, as those dollars will be covered by grants. The board then went into closed session.
Dent County Youth Leadership Academy graduates Alex Bottorff and Josh Sirois were named finalists in the statewide Photovoice Missouri competition in April and their photographs of Dent County are on display at the Bank of Salem main branch until Friday, June 7th. Photovoice Missouri encourages students to raise awareness about how their communities are supporting healthy eating and opportunities for physical activity by taking photographs of what they see in their everyday lives. The students participated in Photovoice Missouri as part of the 2013 Youth Leadership Academy, a program sponsored by Dent County Extension and Salem FFA, with support from the Judson Young Foundation and Dent County Community Foundation.
The 2012 Annual Water Supply Quality Report for the City of Salem water supply is now available and there were no negative results detected during the year. It was also reported that there were no violations during the 2012-year. A copy of the 2012 Annual Water Supply Quality Report can be read at the City of Salem Administration Building, the Salem Public Library and the KSMO Radio Studios.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is notifying the public that it will close its offices nationwide on Friday, May 24th as a result of government-wide automatic spending cuts that took effect on March 1, 2013. Absent any action to overcome these required reductions, the Department anticipates the need to close and suspend operations for an additional six days over the remainder of the current fiscal year. The closures are also expected on: Friday, June 14th, Friday, July 5th, Monday, July 22nd, Friday, August 2nd, Friday, August 16th and Friday, August 30th.
A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. Daniel Descalso went 3-for-3 and broke the contest open with an eighth-inning grand slam as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 10-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in the middle test of a three-game set at Petco Park. Descalso knocked in five runs in all and scored three times to help back a solid performance from Adam Wainwright (6-3), who allowed just one run over 7 1/3 frames. He walked one and struck out six. Carlos Beltran drove in a pair of runs while Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig each added two hits and an RBI for St. Louis, which has alternated victories and losses in its last seven contests. The Cardinals and Padres will play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting at 8:35.
Eric Hosmer tallied two hits with two runs scored and the Kansas City Royals used a four-run eighth inning to capture a 7-3 win over the Houston Astros in the middle test of a three-game set. The Royals scored all of their runs over the last three frames. Alex Gordon had three hits and a run scored for the Royals, who snapped a four-game skid. Starter Wade Davis gave up all three runs over five innings while allowing eight hits and striking out six. Bruce Chen (3-0) tossed a scoreless seventh to pick up the win. The Royals and Astros will play the finale of their three-game series tonight, and that game is set for a 7:10 first pitch.

Funeral services for Ernest Q. Schafer, Jr. of West Plains, age 65, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Heiligtag-Lang-Fendler Funeral Home in Arnold and Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Services for Melvin Edward Miller of Salem, age 59, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
