The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that crews are hauling material to Dent County Road 651, patching various chip and seal roads throughout the district and grading in the Turtle area. Simpson also received the Emissions Inventory Questionnaire from the Department of Natural Resources, which is used to monitor how much dust particles are released into the air from the crushing of rock. Dent County is part of the Clean Air Act and the questionnaire is sent out every five years.  Simpson said Dent County crushed 12 tons of rock per year at the cost of $414.00. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that material would be hauled to Dent County Road 322 and grading would be done on Dent County Road 216. Tune also said that grading would be done and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 438. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he would be attending a Region 1 Pandemic Flu Exercise that is being put on by the Maries and Phelps County Health Departments and the MRPC Wednesday May 30^th in St. James. The exercise is held to inform county officials of what to do in case of a disease outbreak. The next meeting of the Commissioner will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

A Salem native, 33-year old Dan Sanders, who defrauded consumers while running a home repair business, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of unfair merchandising practices in St. Louis County Circuit Court on Thursday, May 17^th. Charges against Sanders were filed in June 2006 after an earlier indictment by the St. Louis County grand jury at the request of Attorney General Jay Nixon. Sanders has paid $18,000 in restitution, and still owes $42,881. Judge Mark Seigel ordered Sanders to pay the balance of the money owed by the time of his August 23^rd sentencing. If Sanders fails to pay the balance in full at sentencing, he will receive a four-year prison sentence. Nixon’s office received complaints from 2003 to 2004 from consumers in both St. Louis County and City that Sanders took money for home repair services and either did not begin the work or provided substandard materials and work. Sanders allegedly worked under several business names, including Woodsmill Construction LLC, C&D Seamless Gutters, Smith Services and Unlimited Services.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports for the third week of May. On May 14^th at 11:56 in the evening while on routine patrol, a Dent County Sheriff’s deputy stopped a vehicle on County Road 421 for failing to signal. As the deputy approached the vehicle he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The investigation led to an 18-year old male being issued a summons for alcohol possession by a minor and possession of under 35 grams of marijuana and another 18-year old male was issued a summons for possession of under 35 grams of marijuana. On May 15^th at 8:45 in the morning, the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by the South Central Task Force, searched a residence off of Highway 32 East in Salem. As a result of the search a small amount of plant matter and seeds along with a schedule four controlled substance were taken into evidence. Taken into custody, warrants issued and charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled substance were 31-year old Ruth Rose Verhoff and 30-year old Larry Breeding of Salem. Bond was set at $7,000 each.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off Monday as they begin a three game series tonight with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals have lost five straight games. You can hear the game tonight on KSMO radio starting at 6:50 with the Dugout Show.

The Kansas City Royals, winners of four of their last five games, will be hosting the red hot Cleveland Indians tonight to start a three game series after having Monday off.

Funeral services for Charles Daniel Dale of Salem, age 79, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with military honors. Masonic Services will be held at 7:00 this evening. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.

Funeral services for Karl Ray Payne of Davisville, age 54, will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Davisville.

Funeral services for John Stephen Risbeck of Rolla, age 72, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be this evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Graveside services will be Thursday at 2:00 at the Clariton Cemetery in Chariton, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.
