The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Presiding Commissioner Darrel Skiles commented on the minutes from the previous commissioner’s meeting that indicated that according to Willis Stagner, the Stagner Cemetery had been marked by the Dent County Surveyor Craig Ruble. Skiles said that he spoke with Ruble on Saturday and found out that he did some preliminary work on the property but had not yet marked the corners. Ruble thought that he would be able to finish the survey this week, weather permitting, and present his findings to the county. At the meeting last Thursday, the commissioners agreed to allow Stagner to trim the trees near the cemetery. The cemetery is located within the city limits but is owned by the county. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that a man would be out checking culverts and cleaning out those that are clogged before the expected storms. He indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6300 and grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 6470. Purcell reported that major service would be done on truck #24 and that two men would be hauling creek gravel. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that a man was going to be changing blades on cutter #6 and changing oil on truck #78. He stated that backhoe work was going to be done on Dent County Road 5320, one man would be screening gravel and one man would be hauling gravel to be screened. Presiding Commissioner Skiles said that he would be attending a South Central Missouri Community Action Agency Board meeting tonight in Winona to discuss ways to cut another $100,000 from their budget due to Sequestration. He will also be attending a Central Regional Investment Board Caucus meeting Wednesday afternoon in Rolla. The commissioners agreed to begin Board of Equalization meetings on July 2^nd at 9:00 if that is convenient with the public members of the BOE. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reminds everyone that absentee voting continues for the special June election, and the last day to vote absentee will be June 3^rd. The courthouse will also be open from 8:00 AM until noon on Saturday, June 1^st for absentee voting. At the last meeting, the commissioners voted 3-0 to approve the payment of $21,000 on a dump truck for the Road and Bridge Department. The invoice comes from Arthur Truck & Sons, Inc. from New York. The next meeting will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors will conduct their May meeting tonight in the hospital library beginning at 6:00. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the April 16^th meeting, Controller Becky Cunningham will give the summary of operations and statistics reports for April. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy will update the Board with the nursing and ancillary service reports. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor will then have an auxiliary report, hospital activity calendar and legislative updates, followed by the Chief of Staff report. In old business will be and 2011 Strategic Planning Goals update, the Community Health Needs Assessment update and a Finance Committee meeting report. The Board will then address both budgeted and non-budgeted purchases for the hospital. The Board may then vote to go into closed session. The May meeting of the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors is open to the public. 

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Thursday, May 9^th at 7:11 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Walmart parking lot in reference to a citizen report of a black GMC truck that had hit a Jeep. Upon investigation there was no damage to either vehicle but the driver of the truck, a 57-year old male of Cook Station, was placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Then at 7:29 that same night, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a red 2007 gas powered scooter valued $500 from the garage of a residence in the 400 block of Hogan & Adams lane. On Friday, May 10^th at 8:15 pm, an officer made contact with a 29-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem while conducting an investigation at a residence in the 100 block of East Third.  He was taken into custody on the warrant and incarcerated. Later that night at 9:39, an officer was detailed to Third and Highway 19 in reference to a disturbance. That investigation revealed a 37-year old Salem male and a juvenile male of Salem, had assaulted a 35-year old Salem male, causing serious injuries. The two suspects were taken into custody for assault.  The adult suspect was incarcerated pending the application for a warrant and the juvenile was released to the custody of a grandparent and the report will be forwarded to the Juvenile Office. On Saturday, May 11^th at 1:32 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a key from the ignition of a red 2005 Chrysler parked in the 200 block of North Iron. On Monday, May 13^th at 8:00 am, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that a lawnmower, valued $139, was loaned to a neighbor and not returned. Further investigation revealed the mower is now missing. Anyone with any information regarding the theft reports is asked to call the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 23^rd at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. Jason Marquis pitched six solid innings while Jesus Guzman was hit by a pitch to force in the winning run as the San Diego Padres took a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to open a three-game series. Shelby Miller (5-3) gave up three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Cardinals, who had won five of seven coming into the game. The Cardinals and Padres will play again tonight and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 8:35.

Matt Dominguez launched a three-run home run in the fourth inning as the Houston Astros topped the Kansas City Royals, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game set from Minute Maid Park. Jeremy Guthrie (5-2) absorbed his second consecutive loss after giving up all six runs on eight hits in five innings. The Royals and Astros will play again tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Ida Hewkin of Eureka, formerly of Davisville, age 95, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Turnbough Cemetery at Davisville. Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Frank Edward Ketterer, Sr. of Rolla, age 80, will be Thursday at 10:00 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be at the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church of Rolla.

Funeral services for Ernest Q. Schafer, Jr. of West Plains, age 65, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Heiligtag-Lang-Fendler Funeral Home in Arnold and Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Services for Melvin Edward Miller of Salem, age 59, will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.
