The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road reports, both districts were checking the roads and repairing any washouts discovered. Both district work crews were also checking for and removing debris from low water crossing and culverts. District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grader #29 is still being repaired by Fabick, and work continues on Dent County Truck #119. In District 2, Commissioner Gary Larson said that a new fuel tank was being installed on Dee County Truck #58, while truck #65 and #70 were being serviced. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Jo Ann Emerson has sent a letter to Superintendent Reed Detring of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways concerning the closing of the roads and trails. Skiles stated that people should continue to send Detring letters with the concerns, but also write to Jo Ann Emerson that they have concerns over these proposed trail and road closings. Kim Edwards from the South Central Missouri Community Action Agency told the commission about the Homeless Prevention Rapid Rehousing Program that has been offered through their office that was funded by the ARA funds and was distributed through the Emergency Shelter Grant Program. To qualify, a person had to meet the HUD definition of “homeless” and meet the income guidelines of the Department of Social Services. The SCMCAA only helped those with rental assistance, not mortgage assistance, and those with written eviction notices. She said that the agency spent their first allotment of money available to those in need totaling $32,146. The program was intended to last for two years, but the agency is only going two receive a total of two allotments and the first allotment has already been distributed. The program served 32 households of which eight were handicapped persons and ten were single parents. A total of 48 adults and 39 children were helped first allotment of funds by the program. At the last meeting, Dent County Prosecutor Brandi Baird was in to discuss the carpet downstairs at the judicial building as it has holes and patches in it. The commission agreed to replace it. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting Thursday evening in the hospital library. For the month of April, the hospital had a gain from operations of $81,131 and an excess of revenues over expenses of $89, 921. There was an increase in cash of $141,162 for the month and the days in net accounts receivable was at 42. Carol Lacy gave the director of nursing report for the month of April and there were 62 acute care patients admitted, 759 emergency room visits with a turnaround time of 96 minutes in the ER, a total of 185 ambulance runs with 187 patients assessed, 37 surgery cases, 1,770 outpatient registrations, 271 Home Health visits, 7,618 lab tests, 1,056 radiological procedures, 212 CT scans, 26 MRI scans, 8 nuclear med scans, 368 rehab treatments, 225 dialysis treatments and 431clinical visits. On May 25th, 26th and 27th, there will be a men’s and women’s health fair at the hospital from 6:00 to 9:00 in the hospital library. In the Auxiliary report, they raised $1,712 with their Masquerade Jewelry Sale and their Bar-B-Q was a huge success, but the numbers are not all in. Their next event will be the Garden Tour on June 6th.  In the Chief of Staff’s report, courtesy staff privileges were recommended for the new ER doctor, Dr. David White, and the board approved. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that the paperwork for the hospital lagoon has been submitted to the state and it has to be approved before any soil samples are taken. The board went over the budget committee report. For the 2011 fiscal year starting July 1st, the hospital approved an average increase of 2% across the board for semi-private and private rooms, Special Care, Swing Beds, ICF, Observation, telemetry, ancillary and outpatient services and long term care. They project that salaries and retirement contributions will increase next year about 4%, that drug costs will increase 9% and supply costs will go up 7%. The committee budgeted a 9.43% increase in patient revenue for the next fiscal year and expect an increase in expenditures of 4.73%. For the next fiscal year, the committee budgeted a gain from operations of $35,000 with patient revenue estimated at $31,212,000. They also budgeted an increase in payroll of 6.29%. The capital budget for fiscal year 2011 shows budgeted purchases of $791,700 with $101,300 remaining for non-budgeted purchases. In new business, the current year purchases were discussed. The board approved the budgeted purchase of three laser-jet printers to work with the new software for $1,230 from Quill and HP. They also approved the non-budgeted purchase of compact two-door refrigerator for the Emergency Room from Wal-Mart of $150, approved the purchase of a Radi-O-Paque Extremity Ruler for Radiology for $202 from SourceOne, new HON 38000 series desk furniture from Automated Business Systems for $1,302, and an Automated Personnel Call Back System from One Call Now for $1,700. The board then went into closed session.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces that Troop I officers will again be involved in the "10-mile Trooper Project" during the peak travel days of the Memorial Day weekend on Interstate 44.  By assigning a trooper every 10 miles on the state's more heavily traveled highways, the Patrol hopes to reduce traffic crashes through vigorous enforcement and high visibility. The objective of the program is also to place a trooper in close proximity of motorists who may need assistance.

Matt Holliday's two-run, go-ahead double in the second inning held up, as the Cardinals earned a split of a two-game series against the Marlins with a 4-2 decision. Ryan Ludwick and David Freese each knocked in a run for St. Louis, which received seven solid innings from Adam Wainwright to win for the third time in four games. Wainwright (6-2) gave up two runs in the first inning then settled down to blank Florida over his next six frames, allowing a total of six hits and three walks while fanning eight to pick up the win. Wainwright was relieved in the eighth by Kyle McClellan, who set down Florida's 3-4-5 hitters in order. In the ninth, Ryan Franklin worked around a two-out walk to earn his 10th save of the season. The Cardinals will face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this weekend starting tonight at 6:55 on KSMO.

Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run homer and Luke Hochevar tossed his third career complete game, as the Kansas City Royals claimed a 9-3 win over the Cleveland Indians to sweep a brief two-game set at Progressive Field. Jose Guillen finished 2-for-4 with a two-run shot and three RBI for Kansas City. Hochevar (4-2) allowed three runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in throwing 107 pitches. Hochevar retired the last 10 Cleveland hitters to complete his gem. The Royals are now 5-2 since new manager Ned Yost took over the club and start an interleague series with the Colorado Rockies this weekend.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.
