The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday in the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board heard from Steve Mueller from Cellnet about installing meter-reading boxes on city telephone poles in order to take natural gas meter readings for AmerenUE. They are looking for a five-year agreement. The board wants to contact cities that already use this service to see if there are any problems with interference. The board heard from Donald Durham stating that the Salem Police Officer Joe Chase did not have his emergency sirens on when an accident occurred a couple weeks ago involving his niece. Police Chief Clifford Jadwin said that the highway patrol investigation indicated that emergency lights and sirens were on as reported by witnesses. The board received a list of damages from J.J. Tune in regards to a sewer backup at the Dent County Memorial Chapel that was the result of storm water infiltrating the sewage system that left about six or seven inches of water in their basement. The city insurance doesn’t want to pay for the damage, but Tune said that the city was aware that storm water has been getting into the wastewater lines, that a pole had been driven into a main sewer line, and that there was grease in the line. He left the list of damages with the board to refile with the insurance company with an estimated repair amount of about $29,000. The board heard from Denver Bates who said that he talked with Electric Superintendent Larry Majors about removing a limb that eventually took out his service line. He left a list of damages for the city to submit for reimbursement to the insurance company in the amount of $265 since the limb was not removed. In unfinished business, City Attorney Mark Weaver said that he found nothing that would prohibit the city from extending their current contract with Waste Corporation for three years. The board agreed to let Weaver draw up the contract with Waste Corporation and submit it at a future board meeting. The board approved the bid from Kiowa to replace the telephone pole at Mr. Jim’s Barber Shop for $1,730, and they approved the bid from Kiowa to remove and replace the electric pole at Carolyn’s Discount Groceries for $4,125. Alderman Riley asked about derelict buildings and City Engineer Bill Huffman updated Riley on the status of each one. Alderman McDaniels asked about the culverts at the city park and they have now been covered with gravel that needs to settle. Mayor Gary Brown said that 42 people attended the last recycle day. The next recycle day will be for slick paper magazines, plastic bottles and car batteries. He has scheduled another budget meeting for this Thursday at 11:00 to discuss the electric, water and sewer budgets. He also reminded everyone to check out the Roots Festival and Pow Wow that will be in town this weekend. Salem Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs stated that 70 people attended hospitality training in Salem from numerous business types. The board decided to go ahead and have City Attorney Mark Weaver draw up the wording for the placing of a ½ cent sales tax for the August primary. The tax would provide funds for the city park department and storm water control only, and food would be exempt from the tax. A special meeting will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 to approve the issue so that it can be submitted to Dent County Clerk Angie Curley before May 27
th. After the bills were approved, the board went into closed session.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol would like to remind the public that driver examination stations throughout the state would be closed on Monday, May 26th in observance of Memorial Day. Normal operations will resume Tuesday, May 27th.

Kevin Kouzmanoff's three-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the second installment of a three- game series at Petco Park, as San Diego snuck past the St. Louis Cardinals with a much-needed 3-2 victory. The Cardinals' Joel Pineiro (2-3) was saddled with the loss, surrendering three runs on six hits and three walks in his 5 2/3-inning start. The right- hander came into the game 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA in five career appearances against the Padres. Troy Glaus scored, knocked in a run and finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Yadier Molina also recorded two hits as St. Louis ended a three-game winning streak. The Cardinals and Padres play the rubber game in the series tonight starting at 8:45 on KSMO Radio.
The St. Louis Cardinals have announced the resignation of vice president of community outreach Tim Hanser. No replacement has been named at this time.
Justin Masterson allowed three hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings, and Coco Crisp knocked in the winning run as Boston slipped past Kansas City, 2-1, in the second of four from Fenway Park. Masterson (1-0), making his second career major-league start after being called up from Double-A Portland, fanned five and walked three en route to his first big-league win. Jonathan Papelbon recorded his 13th save of the season, and third in as many chances, with 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings. Starter Gil Meche (3-6) took the loss for Kansas City despite a solid outing, charged with five hits and two runs with eight strikeouts over seven full frames. Alex Gordon collected three hits and John Buck knocked in the lone run for the Royals. The two teams play again tonight.

Funeral services for Hazel Martin of Bunker, age 96, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the United Baptist Tabernacle in Bunker. Interment will be in the Chapman Cemetery in Bunker.
