The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune reported that both district crews are back to their routine grading routes and will also be repairing any flood damage along the way.  Commissioner Simpson said that in District 1, grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5520, 5525, 6020, 6255 and 6400. He also said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5400 and a crew would be patching the chip and seal on Doss Road. For District 2, Commissioner Tune reported that grading would be done and material would be hauled to Dent County Roads 2500, 2510, 2550, 2554 and 2555 and also in the Hidden Valley Estates Subdivision on Dent County Roads 2283 and 2285. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that at last Thursdays meeting Susan Cunningham with Spatial Data Research stopped by to update the Commission on rural addressing. Skiles said that the county is going to start looking for a rural addressing coordinator who will administer new addresses once the initial phase is completed. Linda Harris stopped by the meeting to let Commissioner Tune know that a road sign pole had been taken from the intersection of Dent County Roads 4330 and 4370. Harris said the road signs were still there, but the pole had been removed. At the previous meeting, Clinton Massey with the Juvenile Division came by to discuss with the Commission a grant the department had applied for from OSCA in the amount of $8820.50. The grant will filter through the county treasurer’s office and into the General Revenue Fund. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The ceremonies for the 123^rd graduating class were held Friday night in the football stadium. After the traditional walk in, singing, and speeches, the scholarships and awards were announced. The big winner was Luke Heithold as he was awarded five scholarships totaling $3,150 (Alumni Association, Dent/Phelps R-3, F. Joe Crosswhite Math and Science, Salem Area Computer User Group, and Sam Walton Community Scholarships) and the Salem Wood Products/Larry Grove Memorial Scholarship for $2,500 for four years ($10,000 total). Jenna Homeyer was awarded three scholarships for a total of $5,500 (Rotary Club, Seidal Club/Jackie Alexander Memorial, and The Dorman Steelman Memorial Scholarships). Natalie Howard was awarded three scholarships for a total of $4,750  (Alumni Association, American Legion, Wisdom Award and Scholarships). Zach Moser was given three scholarships totaling $4,000 (MFA, Salem FFA/Luther Blair Memorial, and The Dennis J. and Cora I. Watkins Science Foundation Scholarships). Samantha Lundy was awarded the Michelle Lundy Memorial Scholarship for $500 and the Quality Machine Works Scholarship for $1,000 for four years. The U.S. Foodservice Scholarship was given to Crystal Williams, which is $3,500 for four years. The Senior Class Citizenship Awards were given to Luke Heithold and Terra White.

An accident happened at 4:25 in the afternoon on Sunday in Dent County on Route DD about six miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Ford F-150 driven by 21-year old Garrett Sheppard of Salem was traveling westbound on County Road 2230 and pulled into the path of a 2005 Ford F-150 driven by 54-year old Beverly Martinez of Lawton, Oklahoma, that was traveling north on Route DD. Martinez suffered minor injuries and was transported to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by private vehicle. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and were driven from the scene. Sheppard was cited for failure to yield.

The winner of the 2^nd Annual National Single Mic Competition for 2008 was “Ozark Alliance” of Salem. A total of 13 bluegrass bands from around the United States competed in the contest. The “Ozark Alliance” bluegrass band consists of the members of the Vaughn Family. Dennis, the dad, plays the banjo, guitar and bass. He also sings lead and bass vocals. Robin, the mom, plays the upright bass and sings lead, alto and tenor vocals. Their son, 16-year old Alex, the eldest of three children, plays the guitar, mandolin and bass. He also sings leads and back-up vocals. The eldest daughter, 15-year old Jenny, plays the fiddle and mandolin and sings lead and back-up vocals. Last but not least there is 4-year old Allison, who has her own fiddle and mandolin, and is the Band Manager. The 1^st Annual National Single Mic Competition for Bluegrass winners, “Midnight Flight” performed while the scores were being tabulated.

Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs to lead the St. Louis Cardinals in a rout of the San Diego Padres, 8-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Ryan Ludwick went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, and missed the cycle by a triple, for the Cardinals, who have won three in a row. Yadier Molina, Todd Wellemeyer and Cesar Izturis added an RBI each in the win. Wellemeyer (5-1) took the win after he gave up just two runs on six hits in six frames. St. Louis' bullpen was perfect through three innings of relief.

Left-hander Jon Lester pitched the 18th no- hitter in Red Sox history, as Boston beat the Kansas City Royals, 7-0. Lester (3-2), a cancer survivor, struck out nine and issued only two walks - in the second inning to Billy Butler and in the ninth to Esteban German. After walking German to start the ninth, Tony Pena hit a chopper to third base and was thrown out. David DeJesus then grounded out to first and Alberto Callaspo struck out swinging at a high fastball for the final out. The Red Sox mobbed Lester at the mound after he threw 130 pitches, 86 for strikes.

Funeral services for Lynn Kinder of Licking, age 72, will be held today at 2:00 at the Assembly of God Church in Licking with Pastor David Skeens officiating. Interment will be in the Williams Cemetery in Licking. All arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Cecil Welch of St. James, age 94, will be held Wednesday morning at 10:30 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Oak Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Arbrey A. “Jack” Redman of Licking, age 69, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Salem Chapel of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Willard Eugene Rodgers of Salem, age 62, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 9:00 until service time. Graveside services will be held in the Shephard Hills Cemetery in Barnhart at 2:00.
