The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Deloris Gray Wood reported on her trip to San Antonio for a National Historic Trails Workshop where she made contacts with a number of people from the National Park Service, Federal Highway Department and Bureau of Land Management. They recommend that groups within the county should partnership to create a more powerful force in dealing with the National Park Service’s proposed trail and trace closures such as the Historical Society partner with the fur trappers association and then with the county commission. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that Darren Lingle from Representative Emerson’s office saw the sites last Thursday with Kenny Wells and he was going to get in touch with Tom Schulte with Senator Bond’s office to see if something could be done. Skiles said that he would like to see what they say before doing anything else, but insists that people should still write to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Superintendent Reed Detring with their concerns. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the work crews were checking for washouts. They were also going to repair truck #119, and grader #24 is going to be repaired by Fabick. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that the workers would be using cold mix to repair Dent County Roads 2240 and 2300 that are chip and seal. Presiding Commissioner Skiles reported that he attended the Dent County IDA meeting last Thursday where they elected officers for the next year. At the last meeting, the commissioners met with Prosecutor Brandi Baird in the Judicial Building to discuss plans about her office moving downstairs where the juvenile office and public administrator offices use to be. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and assault. On Friday, May 14th at 6:00 pm, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East First Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an unsecured residence and took $500 cash. At 11:30 p.m. that same night, an officer was dispatched to Ray Lane in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 31-year old Salem man, known to the victim who is a 25-year old Salem woman, came into her residence uninvited. Upon entering the residence, the male suspect assaulted the female and left the scene. The male suspect has not been located at this time and the report is still under investigation. On Saturday, May 15th at 12:00 p.m. an officer responded to Country Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that while the victim was shopping, the vehicle was left unsecured at which time a person or persons unknown entered the vehicle and took without permission a purse and the contents. At 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Truman Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an unsecured vehicle while parked at the residence. Removed was a Craftsman cordless drill and battery pack valued at $150 and a Sony CD player valued at $150. Digging deep in an effort to discover untapped, future talent in the lead mining, milling and recycling industry, the Doe Run Company is commencing its annual summer student employment program. After recently opening the call to fill positions, several internships remain open at Doe Run’s three Missouri locations – the Herculaneum Smelting Division; the Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO); and the Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD). College juniors and seniors enrolled in undergraduate programs ranging from engineering, structural geology, chemistry or environmental studies may apply. Students receive the opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the largest integrated lead producer in the Western Hemisphere and the third largest total lead producer in the world. Participants also earn income to support their college education, with pay from $9 to $18 hourly. The program begins in June and ends in August. The Salem Baseball Tigers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning only to watch Owensville score six runs in the 4th inning to tie the game, then add three more in the 5th inning en route to defeating the Tigers, 10-8 to end the season for Salem. Ashton Karr went 3-4 with a home run and an RBI, Andrew Conaway hit a two-run homer in the game, Ryan Smith went 2-3 with two RBI and Andy Kissir went 1-2 with two RBI. Salem finished the season with a 5-14 record.

Ryan Ludwick hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 win over Washington at Busch Stadium. Felipe Lopez clubbed a two-run homer in the third for St. Louis, which swept the two-game series with the slumping Nationals, losers of five straight. Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter (5-1) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on nine hits and struck out five over eight innings. Ryan Franklin pitched around a Skip Schumaker fielding error in the ninth to nail down his ninth save of the season. The Cardinals start a two-game series with the Florida Marlins tonight with the Dugout Show starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Nick Markakis hit an RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Baltimore Orioles rallied past the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, to split a brief two-game set from Camden Yards. Mitch Maier, Scott Podsednik, and Chris Getz each drove in a run during a three-run fifth for the Royals, who had won four of five coming into Tuesday. Zack Greinke gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts in a seven- inning start. Kansas City starts a two game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested can pickup a form at the Salem High School or call Coach Davison at 729-6641.

Funeral services for Violet “Irmalee” Berry of Salem, age 66, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary of Salem. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Upper Parker Church or Dry Fork Baptist Church.

Funeral services for John D. Atkins Sr. of Rolla, age 89, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 7:00, with a Masonic Service at 7:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Phelps County Hospice.

Funeral services for Delray Bryan Wiench of Rolla, age 50, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
