The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Deloris Gray Wood reported on her trip to San Antonio for a National Historic Trails Workshop where she made contacts with a number of people from the National Park Service, Federal Highway Department and Bureau of Land Management. They recommend that groups within the county should partnership to create a more powerful force in dealing with the National Park Service’s proposed trail and trace closures such as the Historical Society partner with the fur trappers association and then with the county commission. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that Darren Lingle from Representative Emerson’s office saw the sites last Thursday with Kenny Wells and he was going to get in touch with Tom Schulte with Senator Bond’s office to see if something could be done. Skiles said that he would like to see what they say before doing anything else, but insists that people should still write to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Superintendent Reed Detring with their concerns. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the work crews were checking for washouts. They were also going to repair truck #119, and grader #24 is going to be repaired by Fabick. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that the workers would be using cold mix to repair Dent County Roads 2240 and 2300 that are chip and seal. Presiding Commissioner Skiles reported that he attended the Dent County IDA meeting last Thursday where they elected officers for the next year. At the last meeting, the commissioners met with Prosecutor Brandi Baird in the Judicial Building to discuss plans about her office moving downstairs where the juvenile office and public administrator offices use to be. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and assault. On Friday, May 14^th at 6:00 pm, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East First Street in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an unsecured residence and took $500 cash. At 11:30 p.m. that same night, an officer was dispatched to Ray Lane in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 31-year old Salem man, known to the victim who is a 25-year old Salem woman, came into her residence uninvited. Upon entering the residence, the male suspect assaulted the female and left the scene. The male suspect has not been located at this time and the report is still under investigation. On Saturday, May 15^th at 12:00 p.m. an officer responded to Country Mart in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that while the victim was shopping, the vehicle was left unsecured at which time a person or persons unknown entered the vehicle and took without permission a purse and the contents. At 3:00 p.m. that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of East Truman Street in reference to a theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered an unsecured vehicle while parked at the residence. Removed was a Craftsman cordless drill and battery pack valued at $150 and a Sony CD player valued at $150. Digging deep in an effort to discover untapped, future talent in the lead mining, milling and recycling industry, the Doe Run Company is commencing its annual summer student employment program. After recently opening the call to fill positions, several internships remain open at Doe Run’s three Missouri locations – the Herculaneum Smelting Division; the Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO); and the Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD). College juniors and seniors enrolled in undergraduate programs ranging from engineering, structural geology, chemistry or environmental studies may apply. Students receive the opportunity to gain first-hand experience with the largest integrated lead producer in the Western Hemisphere and the third largest total lead producer in the world. Participants also earn income to support their college education, with pay from $9 to $18 hourly. The program begins in June and ends in August.
