The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Norma Simmons was in attendance to discuss with the commission the increased traffic and dust on Dent County Roads 2400 and 2430 since the closing of the bridge on Route H. She mentioned that many of those new to the roads were driving at excessive speed making it very dangerous for the residents who live there as well as creating excessive dust. The commissioners voted to establish a temporary 35 MPH speed limit effective immediately on those roads. They contacted Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings to begin patrolling those roads and enforce the new speed limit immediately, and the commission also wrote a letter to the highway patrol to let them know of the new speed limit. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that workers would be installing the new speed limit signs on Dent County Roads 2400 and 2430, and cutting brush on Dent County Road 6500. Work crews will also finish rebuilding the access ramp on Dent County Road 6070 with clay onto the south end of Route NN. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that crews will be installing a new pipe and adding new material on Dent County Road 5260 and have also been installing pipes on county roads in Boss and in Howes Mill. He said that material would also be added to Dent County Road 4040 and that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a CCAM meeting on Wednesday and said that the major thrust of the meeting was correcting the sales tax issue on the purchase of out of state vehicles and on those vehicles sold between individuals. He stated that a bill had already passed out of the Senate and was being sent to the house. He reported that the bill containing the county budget law was being bogged down by amendments and it’s future is uncertain. He did indicate that the per diem reimbursement from the state for prisoners would remain at $19.58 for the next year. At the last meeting, the commission approved letting Dent County Surveyor Craig Ruble order the Surveyor Record book, sleeves and envelopes. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft, a traffic violation, a shoplifter, a search warrant, an assault, and a stolen bicycle. On Thursday, April 26th at 7:23 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a cell phone valued at $689 from a vehicle parked in the parking lot of the Al Brown ball fields. That night at 9:23, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, April 28th at 12:28 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $25.51. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Sunday, April 29th at 7:58 in the evening, officers of the Salem Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol executed a search warrant in the 800 block of West Third. The warrant led to the arrest of a 28-year old male and a 31-year old female, both of Salem, for distribution of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of a child. Both were incarcerated pending the applications for warrants. On Monday, April 30th at 12:13 in the early morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. That investigation revealed that a 20-year old Salem male had assaulted a 20-year old Salem female. On Wednesday, May 2nd at 5:15 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen bicycle. That investigation revealed that a person or persons unknown took a silver boys 20” bicycle valued at $50 from the back of a vehicle parked in the High School parking lot. Anyone with any information regarding the theft, assault, or stolen bicycle reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
Anglers generally are as disinterested in the opening dates for hunting seasons as hunters are in fishing-season dates, but the fourth Saturday in May is a red-letter day for both groups. That is opening day for squirrel hunting season and catch-and-keep fishing for black bass in Ozark streams. Hunters may pursue gray and fox squirrels from May 26th through February 15, 2013, with rifles, shotguns or archery equipment. The aggregate bag limit is 10 squirrels and the possession limit is 20. “Aggregate” means hunters may harvest any combination of fox and gray squirrels so long as they do not exceed 10 squirrels total in one day. If hunters bag a daily limit two days in a row, they will have a possession limit of 20 squirrels. After that, they must eat or give away some squirrels before going hunting again in order to stay within the possession limit. Largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, known collectively as black bass, may be caught and possessed year ‘round from impoundments and areas other than the Ozarks. These other areas are defined as the Mississippi river, all waters north of the south bank of the Missouri River, the St. Francis River downstream from Wappapello Dam and streams in that portion of southeast Missouri bounded by a line from Cape Girardeau following Missouri highways 74 and 25, U.S. highways 60, 67 and 160, and the west bank of the Little Black River to the Arkansas state line. The daily limit on black bass in most of the state’s waters is six, with a possession limit of 12.
An accident occurred at 6:08 Thursday evening in Texas County on Kimble Road about a mile north of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, 20-year old Julian Williams of Licking was driving a 2004 Dodge truck when a passenger, 21-year old Sean Edwards of Licking, was leaning out of the vehicle and fell out while it was in motion. Edwards suffered serious injuries and was flown to the Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Nobody involved was wearing seat restraint at the time of the incident.

Brandon Crawford drove in a pair of runs as the Giants defeated the Cardinals, 7-5, on Thursday in the finale of a two-game series. Matt Holliday had a two-run homer and a sac fly for the Cardinals, losers of five of their last seven games overall. Adam Wainwright (2-5) was charged with five runs, two earned, on six hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. The Cardinals will start a series with the Dodgers tonight in L.A. and you can hear it on KSMO at 8:35.
J.J. Hardy's two-run single in the seventh inning lifted the Baltimore Orioles over the Kansas City Royals, 5-3, in the final test of a two-game series. Humberto Quintero knocked in two runs and scored once for the Royals, who came into this series riding a four-game winning streak. Luke Hochevar (3-4) allowed four runs on seven hits over six-plus frames while strucking out six and only walking one. The Royals will start their interleague schedule tonight, as they will host the Arizona Diamondbacks at 7:10.

Funeral services for Paul Harvey Munsell of Salem, age 84, will be Monday at 7:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 5:00 until service time. Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the Prospect Cemetery in St. Clair with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be given to the VFW of Salem.
Funeral services for Ryan Jacob Pickle of Salem, age 19, will be Tuesday at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Fairclough Cemetery in Cuba, MO. Memorials may be made to the funeral home for expenses.
Memorial services for Virginia L. Shelton of Salem, age 93, will be held Saturday, May 26th at 11:00 at the Salem United Methodist Church with a gathering for family and friends from 10:00 to 11:00 and an Eastern Star Service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Virginia's name to the Salem United Methodist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
