The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. Alderman Jerry Randell announced that the late Jim Jackson’s chair would be turned around for the next couple of meetings in honor of his service to the city. The board then approved the bid from Wayne’s Equipment in Steelville for a Kabota zero-turn mower for $10,710. The budget had $7,000 set aside for a mower and the other money would come from the Parks and Recreation public grounds maintenance, advertising, soccer and parks maintenance. The board also approved the bid from Aquatic Technology from Maine for a new 16’ aluminum diving board for the pool for $3,511. In the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown noted that the sales tax revenue was down $1,175.13 from last month, and the nine month statements show that there has been $7,920,286 in revenues while there have been $8,025,215 in expenses. In the appointment of standing committees and boards, the mayor appointed Becky Godi for a term of four years, and re-appointed Dr. Wayne Bertz, Mike Thompson and Shirley Hollenbeck for a term of four years to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the board approved. The board also approved the re-appointment of John Boyle for a term of five years to the Planning & Zoning Board of Adjustment. The mayor then appointed David Dittman, Jodie Heavin, S.N. Ball IV, Carrie Snider, Ray Walden, Steve Plank, Mike Rocoberto, Brian Larson, Stacy Kirker and Alderman Jerry Randell to one-year terms on the Park and Recreation Board. The board approved all these appointments to the Park Board.  For the Airport Board, Mayor Brown appointed Jim Heavin, John Maledy, Rick Domeyer, Bill Huffman, Ben Bryson and Alderman Kenneth Nash for one-year terms and the aldermen approved these appointments. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash presented the recommendations of the park board that included that admission to the pool be $2.00 regardless of age, that all pool passes be eliminated, that private pool parties be available every night for $150.00 for two hours regardless of the number of people, and that Sundays would be closed for maintenance and cleaning, while pool parties could be held on Sunday at 4:00 and at 6:30. The board approved all the recommendations. Nash said that the pavilion rental this year has not changed, and he saluted Doug Barnes who was not reappointed to the Park Board for his 21 years of service. Mayor Brown then reported that 65% of the citizens of Salem have submitted their census form and the other 35% will be getting a visit from a census worker. He said that Mike Mills from ProEnergy talked with the IDA Monday about Bio-Mass. He said that the city is still offering leaf bag and limb pickup on the first and third Mondays of the month, and people need to cut their limbs to no longer than four feet in length. He said that the city would hire an individual to cut the nuisance violator grass and that the bids taken early would be disregarded. Brown also called for a regular board meting for May 28th at 10:00 in the morning as tow alderman will be on vacation on June 7th. He said that 1,251 people used the fitness center in April while 1,061 used the TCRC. Brown then said that the bid from Arkansas Electric accepted by the board at the last meeting was not actually the lowest bid after a review of the bids showed that some of the bids were offered per 1,000 feet instead of per foot. But a restocking fee of $2,400 to send it back offset the additional $1,200 paid for the wire. The rest of the bills were then approved before the board went into closed session.

The Salem Tiger District baseball game in Owensville Monday was postponed due to wet grounds. The Tigers are now scheduled to play this afternoon at 4:30 in Owensville against the Dutchmen in District play. The Tigers are seeded 6th and you can hear that game on KSMO and ksmoradio.com.

Albert Pujols went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, helping the St. Louis Cardinals continue their recent dominance of the Washington Nationals with a 6-2 win in the first of two games at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals have won 12 of their last 14 games against Washington. St. Louis may have found the perfect solution to cure its slump where they lost nine of the last 12 games by putting two-time reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols in the four-spot. This was the first time since May 30, 2003 that has happened. Colby Rasmus added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, and David Freese hit a two-run triple in a four-run first inning for the Cards, who are 7-0 at home versus the Nats since the start of the 2008 season. Kyle Lohse (1-3) finally got his elusive first win, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk through six-plus frames. The Cards and Nationals play again tonight starting at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

Billy Butler had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, as the Kansas City Royals edged the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3, in the opener of a brief two-game series from Camden Yards. Yuniesky Betancourt also had two hits and knocked in a run for the Royals, who have won two in a row and four of five. Kyle Davies (3-2) was solid in six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits to pick up his first win since April 26 against Seattle. Joakim Soria picked up his 10th save of the season despite a shaky ninth. The Royals and Orioles will play again tonight.

Following Sunday's game, the Royals optioned first baseman Kila Ka'aihue to Triple-A Omaha and selected the contract of pitcher Bryan Bullington from the same club.
