The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. At the meeting, Upper Elementary School principal Melanie Wisdom reported that the 19^th annual Serendipity went very well with 39 exhibitors. She said that two people who attended the festivities have signed on for next year already. Superintendent Steve Bryant reported on a number of legislative updates and said that the school should be exempt form fuel taxes next year. He said that 395 students in grades kindergarten through the 6^th grade have signed up for summer school and another 55 have signed up from 7^th through 12^th grade for Driver’s Education and credit recovery. Bryant stated that the roof on the eastern half of the William Lynch Elementary School needs to be replaced as does a portion of the junior high roof. Bryant said that the school would purchase the roofing materials through a school coop and just bid out the installation. Bryant said that if the bids come in too high, then the junior high roof would take precedence. He also stated the high school gym front will have a new metal front installed this summer with insulation for under $15,000. Bryant went on to report that the construction at the Upper Elementary School is on schedule. The board set a time line for the student drug testing proposal and a meeting will be held next week for those involved in setting the policy. The drug testing policy would only be for those students involved in activities. A preliminary draft will be prepared and a public hearing will be held on June 7^th at 5:00 at the Salem Senior High School Library to field questions from interested individuals and to explain the policy. In the sick leave pool, the certificated staff started the year with 288 days  and members added 61 days during the year. A total of 129 days were drawn out this past year and a total of 34 more days were lost due to resignations or terminations, leaving a total of 186 days to start the next school year. In the support staff pool, they started with 80 sick days and 48 days were added by members during the year. A total of eight days were lost to resignations and 29 days will be used by staff so that on July 1^st, there would be 91 days in the pool. The board accepted a bid of $500 from Doyle Murr of Rightway Homes for a modular at the William Lynch Elementary School. Rightway will also remove the modular at their expense. The board accepted the resignations of head school nurse Amy Cartwright, part time upper elementary and Sr. High custodian Robert Barringer and Senior High Math Teacher Cindy Sachs. The board also accepted the retirement of Jr. High and Sr. High Nurse Barbara Brooks. The board also approved joining the Interlocal Purchasing System to buy supplies at a volume discount because they are a member of the Missouri Association of Rural Educators, and they approved the Special Education Part B Assurances Statement before going into closed session where they employed Marc Mattlin, as a senior high social studies teacher and assistant girls softball coach, Dusty Arzt as a junior high social studies teacher and 7^th and 8^th grade boys football and basketball coach, Drew Overmeyer as the 8^th grade boys basketball coach, Clay Moody as golf coach; and Debbie Baird as the district nurse. The meeting was then adjourned.

The 122^nd graduating class of the Salem High School will conduct their ceremonies tonight at the high school football stadium beginning at 7:00 PM. The Class of 2007 will have 164 seniors to receive diplomas. This year’s valedictorians are Jessica Braman, Tiffany Land, Brandon Schafer, Alex Sellers, Bill VanRonzelen IV and Michael Watson, all with a 4.0 grade point average. The 2007 class salutatorian is Brittany Ford. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SALEM HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2007!

The Cardinals had the day off yesterday and will face the Detroit Tigers tonight starting at 6:00 on KSMO Radio. They will also play tomorrow night at 6:00 and Sunday at noon, all on KSMO.

Scott Elarton gave up four runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings, as the Kansas City Royals downed the Oakland Athletics, 7-4, to casually conclude a four-game series that has seen its share of late-inning heroics. Elarton (1-0) got his first win since July 16 at Detroit in his second start of the season after being sidelined due to shoulder surgery. Joakim Soria finished the ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his eighth save of the season. Mike Sweeney finished 2-for-3 and scored two runs with an RBI for the Royals, who took three of four in the set. Mark Teahen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run in the win, and Paul Phillips drove home a pair. The Royals will be in Colorado tonight to face the Rockies.

Funeral services for John Stephen (Steve) Risbeck of Rolla, age 72, will be held Wednesday morningm at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Tueday evening. Interment will be in the Charton Cemetery in Chariton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

Memorial services for Russell Eugene Taylor of Rolla, age 75, will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Rolla.
