The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2400, 2430, 5380 and 4080, while materials were being hauled to county roads 6210, 6320, and 6640. Purcell went on to say that brush was being cut on Dent County Road 6300. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2110, 4030, and 5320, while materials were being hauled to Dent County Roads 5320 and 4430 and that one man was screening rock. Larson also stated that on Wednesday he and Sam Gorman did the monthly check on the generator at Oak Grove Baptist Church and that the battery was dead. Mike’s Generator Service of Wood River, Illinois, the company that services the generator, was contacted and the service technician came and installed a new battery, checked out the cycling and performance. Larson went on to say that he had ran a test on the generator this morning and everything checked out fine. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the CCAM meeting Wednesday in Jefferson City. Issues discussed at the meeting included termination of the motel contract for 2014-2016. CCAM has been consulting with the motel and it appears that if they went ahead and conducted the 2014 conference at the motel the termination fee of about $25,000 would be waived and the contract would be terminated for 2015 and 2016. Since the timeline to schedule another motel is probably too short this appeared to the best solution. One legislative issue discussed was the bill to allow counties to revise their budgets when revenues fall short of budgeted amounts, which appears to have a good chance of passing. Another was SB42, which included language that would have allowed sheriffs to set their own salaries and that language has been removed from the bill. SB13 to eliminate solid waste management districts has been going through a number of changes including eliminating funding and capping the dollar amounts so no one really knows what will be the final outcome at the end of the session. A new bill, SB23, has been introduced relative to the sales tax on out of state motor vehicle purchases that is expected to address Governor Nixon’s concerns that resulted in his veto of the original bill on the issue. Skiles also commented that the move to fix 911 funding was dead. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting continues with June 3
rd being the last day and that her office would be open from 8:00 to noon on Saturday June 1
st for absentee voting. Curley went on to say that May 29th is the last day to mail out absentee ballots and reminded everyone to vote in the June 4
th election. Michael Caselman made a presentation about mosquito control and Missouri instances of mosquito carried illness and shared his experiences in Florida as a technician in a county project there. County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in three warrants to be signed. The Commission voted to pay bills. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
Whether your taste in outdoor activities runs toward fishing or hunting, May 25th is a day to mark on your calendar. Missouri’s hunting season for gray and fox squirrels opens May 25th and runs through February 15, 2014. Legal methods include rifles, shotguns, or archery equipment. The aggregate bag limit is 10 squirrels and the possession limit is 20. “Aggregate” means hunters may harvest any combination of fox and gray squirrels so long as they do not exceed 10 squirrels total in one day. If hunters bag a daily limit two days in a row, they will have a possession limit of 20 squirrels. After that, they must eat or give away some squirrels before going hunting again in order to stay within the possession limit. Largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, known collectively as black bass, may be caught and possessed throughout the year from impoundments and in areas other than the Ozarks. These “other” areas are defined as the Mississippi River, all waters north of the south bank of the Missouri River, the St. Francis River downstream from Wappapello Dam, and streams in that portion of southeast Missouri bounded by a line from Cape Girardeau following Missouri highways 74 and 25, U.S. Highways 60, 67 and 160, and the west bank of the Little Black River to the Arkansas state line. Black bass may be caught year-round in the defined area of the Ozarks, but they must be released immediately after being caught now through the Friday before the fourth Saturday in May. The daily limit on black bass in most of the state’s waters is six, with a possession limit of 12. However, many lakes and streams are subject to special daily and length limits. These are listed in the 2013 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations. The booklet is available from permit vendors, Missouri Department of Conservation offices, and online at mdc.mo.gov.
With the warmer temperatures, Ozark Scenic Riverways has expanded operations for the visiting public. The historic Alley Mill near Eminence is now open from 9:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. on Sundays, Fridays, and Saturdays until Memorial Day weekend, and daily afterwards. Beginning Saturday, May 18th, the Visitor Contact Station located in Van Buren will be open daily including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 pm throughout the summer season. View the new lobby exhibit The Civil War in Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas, which recognizes the American Civil War Sesquicentennial. The display explores the causes of the Civil War, the Midwest geography of its rivers, the Ozark Highlands effect on the war’s military actions in the area, and the personal impacts on the Ozark civilians caught in the middle of two warring armies. The Salem High School Graduation Commencement exercises will be held Friday night at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. If it should rain, the exercises will be moved to the SHS Gym. A total of 137 students are expected to graduate with a record nine valedictorians and four salutatorians. The nine valedictorians include Desiree Cowan, Cody Lough, Emily Moser, Emily Sullivan, Alyvia Toman, Cheyenne Parker, Chandler Parks, Emily Smallwood and Rebecca Watts. The salutatorians are Alan Benowitz, Samantha Parker, Laken Cook and Cassidy Wood. The exercises will feature musical selections by the Salem High School Chamber Choir. Those unable to attend will be able to watch the exercises live on Fidelity Local Channel 6 or online at fidelitylocal6.com.
A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 23rd at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. Daniel Murphy had four hits to go with two runs scored and an RBI in the New York Mets' 5-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to avoid a sweep in the finale of a four-game set on Thursday. Adam Wainwright (5-3) fanned eight, but allowed four runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.
The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will be in Oakland tonight to start a three-game series with the Athletics.

Funeral services for Lottie M. Callen of Rolla, age 95, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Patrick Michael Broyles of Marshfield and formerly of Rolla, age 45, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Vineyard Christian. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
