The Salem Police Department released their reports for traffic violations. On May 5^th at 12:45 in the morning, a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Salem male for a minor in possession of intoxicants and open container. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On May 8^th at 1:46 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 45-year old male from Omaha, Nebraska on a felony fugitive warrant out of Dallas, Texas. He was incarcerated pending extradition. On May 12^th at 5:08 in the evening, a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem female for possession of synthetic narcotics and possession of marijuana. She was incarcerated pending the application of warrants. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the district administrative offices boardroom beginning at 7:00 PM. After the consent agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Bryant will talk about Serendipity, discuss legislative updates, go over the MSBA regional meeting and teacher in-service days, discuss summer school and give an update on facilities and grounds. Old business to be addressed includes the student drug testing proposal timeline. In new business, there will be a recap for the year for CIA. The board will then discuss the inter-local purchasing system (TIPS) agreement and board resolution, go over sick leave pool reports, review a Special Education Part B Assurances statement, go over surplus property bids(s) and hear resignations. The Board will then adjourn and go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel and student discipline. The regular meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

Representatives from The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO) and Buick Resource Recycling Division (BRRD) recently accepted two-state awards for outstanding safety performance in 2006 – the latest in a long list of safety accolades held by the company. The Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations presented its Best Safety Record awards to southeast Missouri mining, milling, smelting and contracting companies during the 2006 Southeast Missouri Mine Safety Association (SMMSA) awards banquet on April 5^th in Farmington. Doe Run’s BRRD earned the Best Safety Record – Smelter award, and Fletcher Mine received the Small Surface at an Underground Mine award. In addition, special recognition went to Doe Run's Fletcher and Sweetwater operations for each achieving one full year without a lost-time accident. The awards recognize SMMSA members for excelling in mine and smelter safety and health. Most recipients of the Best Safety Record award have zero lost-time injuries. Other criteria include the number of reportable hours and injuries. The Doe Run Company and its predecessors have won the prestigious Sentinels of Safety award for Underground Metal Mining more than 20 times in the past three decades and awarded the region’s Safe Smelter Award nine times in the last 12 years. BRRD’s state-of-the-art facility processes 350,000 tons of material annually and recovers lead and other materials from discarded lead-acid batteries and lead paint chips. In 2006 alone, the company processed more than 13.5 million lead-acid batteries – the nation’s No. 1 most recycled product.

Wilson Betemit's three-run homer with two outs in the fifth led the Los Angeles Dodgers to 5-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set. Betemit, pinch-hitting for Randy Wolf, hit a 1-0 pitch from Kip Wells (1-8) into the seats in center, giving Los Angeles a 5-3 lead. St. Louis got within a run in the seventh on a double by Scott Rolen and an RBI pinch-single by Scott Spiezio. Juan Encarnacion went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Cardinals, who have lost two in a row and four of six. Wells lasted five innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and six walks, while striking out five. He has lost his last seven starts, allowing 37 earned runs in 39 innings for an 8.54 ERA during that stretch. He leads the NL in losses and earned runs allowed (39). St. Louis' Yadier Molina extended his hitting streak to a career-high 10 games in the contest. The Cardinals have the day off today before facing Detroit on Friday night.

Ryan Shealy drove in the deciding run in the ninth, as the Kansas City Royals rallied for two runs in their final at-bat to edge the Oakland Athletics, 4-3, in the third matchup of a four-game series atMcAfee Coliseum. Kiko Calero (0-3) who gave up a pair of runs in the ninth en route to a loss. Esteban German drew a one-out walk off Calero, swiped second and then came in on John Buck's double to right-center. Paul Phillips came in to pinch run for Buck, and was driven in immediately courtesy of Shealy's base hit to center that gave the Royals a 4-3 edge. David Riske then retired the A's in order in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season. German finished with an RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who have won three of their last four overall. Odalis Perez got the start and actually carried a no-hitter into the sixth before Jason Kendall hit a leadoff double to right-center. He ended up with the no decision despite tossing six innings of no-run, one-hit ball. Jimmy Gobble (3-1) got the win. This four-game series wraps up today with a matinee contest.

Funeral services for Herman Schallenberg Sr. of St. James will be held this morning at 10:30 at the First Baptist Church in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of St. James.

Funeral services for Denzil Jack Parker of Bunker, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Crossville Baptist Church in Bunker. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Crossville Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Crossville Baptist Church.

No funeral services will be held for Bessie May Askey of Salem, age 98. who passed away May 15^th. Bessie Askey donated her body to Washington University in St. Louis.  All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Graveside services for Betty J. Richardson of Lenox, age 79, will be held Friday morning at 11;00 at the Anutt Cemetery in Anutt. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Anutt Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mike Scianna of Salem, age 57, are incomplete at this time and are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
