The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said a crew would be replacing county road signs that are missing or have been stolen, plus using pitchforks and shovels to remove debris from culverts and low-water crossings. Another crew would be patching chip and seal roads 5015 and 6300, and another crew is working on repairing a seal on the asphalt lay down machine. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 2115 and 2120. He also said that potholes would be patched on Dent County Road 4300 that is chipped and sealed, and roads would be checked for washouts. Both commissioners said that a man would be hauling road chips from Ironton for the summer chip and seal projects. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the CCAM meeting in Jefferson City Wednesday where they talked about legislative updates. He said the bill for the sheriff salary increase this year is dead, and the bill to increase by $3.00 the per diem received for prisoners had the amendment to send the money to the Sheriff’s Inmate Security Fund removed. That money in Dent County will go into the Law Enforcement Sales Tax Fund. Skiles stated that Travis Elliott from the law firm Ellis, Ellis, Hammons and Johnson would be the new general counsel for CCAM. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported she received all the railroad and utility assessments. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse at 9:00 and the meting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 5:42 Thursday evening in Dent County on Highway F about seven miles southwest of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 19-year old Victoria Reiter of Salem was driving a 1995 Mazda Protégé north when she ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, ran off the left side of the roadway, struck an embankment, and overturned. Reiter suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Mazda sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday evening. After approval of the amended agenda and communications, Superintendent Steve Carvajal updated the Board on the building projects. Floors are to be stripped and the tile work and carpeting at the high school is expected to start as early as next week. He predicts the high school will be done by June 1st. Electric and plumbing work are done at the middle school, some painting has been done and the summer projects are about to start. Assistant Superintendent John McCullough explained to the Board that with all the missed days this year due to the weather, teacher evaluation preparations are underway to start next school year. The William Lynch Elementary received notification as a PBS Silver Award recipient this year and will be recognized at the annual conference in June. To date 144 students have enrolled, mostly kindergarten, for the Summer Journey 2014 and there have been 52 preschoolers screened and 14 on the waiting list for screening in June. The students from the Salem Upper Elementary that shot at the NASP National Tournament at Louisville, Kentucky shot so well that they qualified for the World NASP Tournament in Wisconsin. And as of May, the 100 Mile Club students have logged over 4,200 miles. The Salem Junior High 8th grade students went on a tour of the Doe-Run Buick Mine and EOC and MAP testing is now finished with the exception of a few students who need to complete make-up testing. At the FFA banquet held May 2nd, current Seniors Amber McDaneil and Cordell Tatom and 2013 graduating Seniors Kutter Tiefenthaler and Cody Lough received their state degrees award. Chloe Cook won 3rd place at the Missouri State HOSA competition in Medical Technology and is eligible to attend the National Conferences in June at Disney World. The Varsity Girls' Track team won SCA Conference Champs for the second year in a row, Savannah Hanning tied the SCA Pole Vault record and the Varsity Boys Track team took 3rd in the SCA. Salem Senior High had one student graduate 2nd semester through MO Options. The student was the first at Salem to take the new HiSet test (HSE), which replaced the GED test. At the awards banquet, Savannah Hanning got the Lady Tiger Award and Cody Whitaker got the Tiger Award. The Board voted to approve the TCRC renewal and approved the MSBS procedures 2014A updates, which were state laws. The Board adopted the SPED compliance, which is a state compliance, approved the Professional Development Plan for the 2014-2015 school year and approved the Developmental Preschool lease. The Board accepted the resignations of Cindy Carmack as a First Grade teacher, Jamie Chilton as a Special Ed Paraprofessional, Kati Craft as a Sixth Grade Math teacher, Debbi Ritchey from Junior High Annual and Bryan Carty as ISS teacher, Junior High Boys Basketball and Junior High Football Coach. The Board then declared surplus property consisting of lockers and voted to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel.

Adam Ziske went 2-3 with 3 RBI to lead the Salem Baseball Tigers past the Rolla Bulldogs in the final regular season game by the final score of 9-4. Triston Dubois went 3-5 with 2 RBI while Jon Arzt and Austin Wulff also had two hits each. The Bulldogs were limited to three hits in the game although Salem did make six errors in the last four innings. Salem finished the regular season with a 9-11 record and is seeded 3rd in the Class 4, District 9 Tournament to be held in Salem. Salem will face Owensville Saturday afternoon at 3:30. The Salem Tiger tennis team will be in Willow Springs today for Districts. Salem track will be in Washington Saturday for Districts also.
Michael Wacha earned his first win in more than a month and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs, 5-3. Wacha (3-3), who also hit a two-run single, struck out five and surrendered two runs on seven hits over seven innings for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four games. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Atlanta Braves tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 6:40.
Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to lift the Baltimore Orioles over the Kansas City Royals, 2-1. Danny Valencia knocked in the lone run for the Royals, who play the Orioles again tonight.

Funeral services for Leora M. Hayes of Salem, age 80, will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
Funeral services for Gilbert Sturdevant of Salem, age 85, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Hutson Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from noon until time of service.
Funeral services for Mary Grace Harston of Rolla, formerly of Salem, age 81, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Ozark Highland Christian Church. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.
Alvin Louis Long of Salem, age 70, passed away May 17th in Salem. No services will be held. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
