The Salem High School Graduation Commencement exercises will be held Friday night at 7:00 at the Salem High School Football Field. If it should rain, the exercises will be moved to the SHS Gym. A total of 137 students are expected to graduate with a record nine valedictorians and four salutatorians. The nine valedictorians include Desiree Cowan, Cody Lough, Emily Moser, Emily Sullivan, Alyvia Toman, Cheyenne Parker, Chandler Parks, Emily Smallwood and Rebecca Watts. The salutatorians are Alan Benowitz, Samantha Parker, Laken Cook and Cassidy Wood. The exercises will feature musical selections by the Salem High School Chamber Choir. Those unable to attend will be able to watch the exercises live on Fidelity Local Channel 6 or online at fidelitylocal6.com.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct a Special Meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, today at the Council Chambers located at 400 North Iron beginning at 1:15 pm. The Board will vote to go into closed session to discuss litigation.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct their May meeting tonight at the Salem R-80 Boardroom beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda will be communications and the superintendent’s report. Principals of the William Lynch Elementary, Upper Elementary, Junior High and Senior High will then give their reports. In new business the Board will consider the TCRC renewal, an MSBA policy 2012C updates, and bids on Modular classrooms. The Board will then consider approval of the bid on the public library, a storage shed, repairs to the track and to purchases busses. After approval of resignations, the Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The May meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their arrest reports. On Wednesday, May 8^th at 4:00 in the afternoon in Dent County, 32-year old Jason Coble of Salem was arrested and charged with a felony charge of driving while suspended, speeding, and failure to wear a seatbelt. He was held in the Dent County Jail. On Sunday, May 12^th at 2:09 in the morning in Phelps County, 35-year old Brian Happel of Salem was arrested and charged with speeding, failure to dim headlamps, DWI, and failure to wear a seat restraint. He was arrested in held in the Phelps County Jail. On Tuesday, May 14^th at 10:15 in the morning in Crawford County, 29-year old James Hanks of Salem was arrested and charged with a Crawford County felony warrant for dangerous drugs. He is being held in the Crawford County Jail on no bond.

The Doe Run Company’s Southeast Missouri Mining & Milling Division (SEMO) in Viburnum has surpassed 2 million safe work hours without a lost-time injury, a first in its 50 years. The division officially marked this exciting milestone in April. SEMO’s six mines and four mills in Missouri employ more than 870 people who are responsible for 70 percent of the United States’ primary lead supply. SEMO’s six underground lead mines have earned the National Mining Association’s (NMA) prestigious Sentinels of Safety Award a combined 25 times since 1971. SEMO employs award-winning mine rescue teams in the event of a real mine emergency. Doe Run holds the reigning MSHA Metal/ Nonmetal National Mine Rescue championship title. In 2012, Doe Run’s Maroon Team captured first place at the 42nd Southern Regional Mine Rescue Classic in New Iberia, La., while the Gray Team captured third in the Southwestern Regional Mine Rescue Contest. Doe Run’s mine rescue team also received first place overall at MST’s annual Mine Rescue Competition. SEMO previously achieved 1 million consecutive safe hours in 1989, 1996, and 2012.

A Weed and Brush Control Field Day will be held Thursday, May 23^rd at 6:00 pm in Dent County at Fleener Farms near Jadwin. This program, sponsored by the Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District will feature timely information for landowners who wish to better control unwanted weeds and brush in their pasture and hayfields. Topics will include identification of common spring and summer weed and brush species, proper timing or spray application for targeted species, herbicide options for optimum control, calibration techniques and demonstration of both boom and boomless sprayers. Directions to the field day from Salem are to take Highway 19 South approximately five miles to K Highway take a right on K Highway approximately one mile to Z Highway, left on Z Highway 5.8 miles to County Road 6305. Take a final left on County Road 6305 about 100 yards to the field entrance. There is no charge for this program, however, please register to attend by calling the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196. Light refreshments will be provided. Daniel Descalso scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals past the New York Mets, 4-2, in the third of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Jon Jay, Tony Cruz, and Yadier Molina had an RBI apiece for the Cardinals, who have taken the first three games of the series. Seth Maness (3-0) earned the win despite giving up a two-run homer to Rick Ankiel in the seventh inning. Starter Shelby Miller worked 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out six. The Cardinals and Mets play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 12:10.

Lorenzo Cain had two doubles and drove in three runs and Salvador Perez added two hits and a pair of RBI as the Kansas City Royals cruised past the LA Angels of Anaheim, 9-5, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Angels Stadium. Billy Butler added two RBI and Jarrod Dyson added an RBI triple for the Royals, winners in two of their last three. Wade Davis (3-3) gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out two over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. The Royals have the day off.

Funeral services for Linda Lee McMullin of Kansas City, formerly of Bunker, age 64 will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.  Interment will be in the Westfork-Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the McMullin Family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Lottie M. Callen of Rolla, age 95, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Visitation will be held tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Mortuary. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Patrick Michael Broyles of Marshfield and formerly of Rolla, age 45, will be held Monday, May 20^th at 11:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Vineyard Christian. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
