The Salem Park Board held a special meeting Thursday at noon to discuss recommendations to be made to the Salem Board of Alderman about the pool. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash said that the average daily attendance has gone down from over 125 people per day three years ago to about 75 per day last year. One suggestion to help bring people back to the pool are to re-institute a pool pass that would be in the form of punch cards for 20 visits, 40 visits or 60 visits. Each card would offer a discount off the daily price with a larger discount for the higher number of visits. The board further discussed Dollar Saturdays where admission on Saturdays would only be a dollar. It was also suggested that the adult time swim be moved from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM which would save on payroll. It was discussed about finding better pricing on concessions even if it meant looking out of town, but that item was met with some hesitation. It was also suggested to offer Little League teams discounts on pool parties at the end of their season. Finally, Pool Manager Phillip Karr has suggested that a freezer be purchased for ice cream sales, and look into getting a Slushie machine for cold drinks. The discussion there was on cost, but it was definitely something to investigate further. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash will bring these suggestions to the attention of the Board of Alderman Monday night. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their next regular meeting tonight at 7:00 in the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will talk with board about its Memorandum of Understanding with the city, and Molly Malone of Verkamp and Malone, CPA will present the Audit Report for the city for the 2009-2010 year. After the consent agenda, the board will discuss Bill #3224 that annexed adjacent territory in the city that mistakenly had the Mississippi Valley Forest Products Inc. zoned Residential R-1 instead of Commercial. They will also hear from Park and Recreation Director Greg Nash about the park board meeting last week, Director of Public Works Bill Huffman and Mayor Gary Brown. The board will discuss three bills to amend previous ordinances, hear a resolution on the custodian of records and compliance with the Sunshine Law, and hear a resolution on correcting a recording error or property on Orchard Street with Andy and Mary Sue Moody. Mayor Brown will then suggest appointees to the Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Park and Recreation Board, the Community Services Committee, the Airport Board, and the Planning and Zoning Commission. After the approval of bills, the board will go into closed session to discuss litigation, personnel and contract. The City of Salem Board of Alderman regular meeting is open to the public.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of a sobriety checkpoint conducted from 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 6^th until 2:00 a.m., Saturday, May 7^th, on Missouri Highway 28 at the Gasconade River in Pulaski County. During the four-hour operation, troopers stopped 147 vehicles, which resulted in the issuance of 23 warnings. There were two warnings issued for DWI, five warnings for misdemeanor warrant arrests, five warnings for felony drug arrests, two warnings for seat belt violations, three warnings for non-moving traffic offenses, three warnings for driver’s license violations and two warnings for uninsured motorists. Captain Kenley would like to remind the public, if you observe a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner please call the Missouri State Highway Patrol Emergency Hotline at 1-800-525-5555 or *55 on a cellular phone.       

An accident occurred at 11:35 Saturday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about eight miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Volkswagen driven by 17-year-old Amy Smith of Licking, ran off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence, and overturned into a field. Smith suffered minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. An occupant, 14-year-old Mariah Adams of Licking, suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Volkswagen was totaled and was removed by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Class 3 District 10 Baseball Tournament scheduled to begin Saturday in Salem was postponed due to rain and has been rescheduled for today starting at noon. The first game will be Ava and Mountain View/Liberty. The second game will start at 2:30 and will feature Mt. Grove and St. James, and the final game will begin at 5:00 and will feature Cuba and Houston. Admission to the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex will be $3.00 per person.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded first in the tournament and drew a bye in the first round. The second round has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 4:00 and 6:30. Salem will play in the 4:00 against the winner of the Cuba-Houston game.

Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce both hit a two-run double, and the Cincinnati Reds held on to complete a three-game sweep of the Cardinals with a 9-7 win at Great American Ball Park. Lance Berkman and Yadier Molina hit back-to-back solo homers for the Cardinals, who have dropped four of their last five. Ryan Theriot and Nick Punto had a two-run double apiece in the top of the ninth inning. Chris Carpenter (1-3) took the loss -- his first against the Reds since June 6, 2006. The righty was roughed up for nine hits and eight runs -- seven earned -- in 6 1/3 innings. He fanned five and walked two. The Cards face the Phillies today at 5:30 on KSMO Radio.

Sunday's game between the Kansas City Royals and Detroit Tigers was postponed because of rain at Comerica Park. The contest has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 1. The Royals and Tigers were already slated to play three games from August 29-31.
