The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their monthly meeting Thursday night at the William Lynch Elementary Building conference room. After the approval of the consent agenda, three foreign exchange students (one from South Korea, Oman and Bangladesh) each told about their countries and were then very thankful for their year in the R-80 school district. In communications, the Licking School District sent a letter of thanks to R-80 for the use of two buses recently when their buses were down. Superintendent Steve Bryant discussed Serendipity as they celebrated their 20th year with the theme, "Somewhere In Time." It was a big success with 46 presenters and he also noted that the third grade was added this year as part of Serendipity. A total of 406 students are currently signed up for summer school and there will be no Driver's Ed during summer school this year. Bryant brought to the Board's attention that the MSTA Media Award for General Media coverage this year went to KSMO Radio for their reporting, and thanked KSMO for their coverage of the R-80 Board meetings as well as school functions in his reports. In new business, the Board approved the CIA-math curriculum. The three-year process of strategies, inventory, instruction, assessments and objectives of quality curriculum is now complete and was approved until the year 2012 with the emphasis on consistency for grades K-12. The Board was updated on the Student Drug Testing which has gone very smoothly in the first year of implementation. There is a 75% participation ratio for those involved in extra curricular activities with anywhere from 5 to 10 students tested weekly in grades 9 through 12. There has been only two positive results that resulted in a 14-21 day suspension of activities, two that refused to be tested with a 365-day suspension from activity and only three complaints. The Board noted that the student drug testing is a positive, pro-active move for students to say no, with a lot less peer pressure. It was noted that in the last four years at the Jr/Sr High, no drugs have been found in the buildings during random checks and very little has been found in the vehicles on the parking lots. The Board then approved numerous policy revisions, which were more for clarification of previous policies. The Board accepted the resignation of Steven Sparks. The Board also accepted the resignation of Board member A.J. Seay. The Board will conduct a two-week opening to accept applications for those interested in applying for the position vacated by Seay. The R-80 Board will conduct two meetings in June. The regular meeting will be held on June 19th at which time the Board will review those applying for the vacated seat and the second meeting will be held on June 26th at which time the Board will interview and select a member to fill the Board vacancy and also the Board will meet with their bonding agent. The Board then went into closed session for the purpose of discussing student discipline and personnel.

The Salem Spring Sports banquet was held last night at the high school cafeteria and a number of awards were handed out by the coaches. In baseball, the Defensive Player of the Year Award went to Ethan Curley, the Offensive Player of the Year Award was captured by Tyler Washausen, and the Coach’s Award was given to Andrew Karr. In Golf, the Most Improved Player Award went to Zach Pogue, the Most Consistent Award went to Conner Stroburg and the Leadership Award was presented to Brandon Piatt. In Track and Field for the girls, the Best Points in the Field Events Award went to Hannah Kettner, the Best Points in Track Events Award was presented to Emily Allen, and the Most Points in All Events Award was given to Jessica Brand. In Track and Field for the boys, the Best Points in the Field Events Award was given to Stetson Hanning, the Best Points in Track Events Award went to Jared Patterson, and the Most Points in All Events Award was presented to Julian Mason. In Tennis, the “King of the Court” Award went to Luke Heithold, the Most Improved Award was captured by Ryan Marlin, the Coach’s Award was given to Sara Barton, and the Player of the Year Award was presented to Luke Heithold. Athletic Director Bill Schuchardt presented the school with their 6th straight MSHSAA Leadership Award for sportsmanship from the players and fans. He also said that for the first time the school participated in the MSHSAA and National Federation Individual Leadership Awards and Salem nominated Luke Heithold and Hannah Kettner. Finally, Coach Schuchardt presented the “Tiger Awards” that are voted on by the coaches for the best male and female athlete. The Boys Tiger Award went to Taylor Sirois and the Lady Tiger Award went to Natalie Howard.
Jason Bay's three-run pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates past the St. Louis Cardinals in an 11-5 comeback win at Busch Stadium in the finale of a three-game series. Chris Duncan went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in and a pair of runs scored for the Cardinals, losers in seven of their last nine. Jason Isringhausen's (1-5) struggles continued, as he was tagged for four runs on two hits and two walks in one-third of an inning in relief of Joel Pineiro, who surrendered four runs on six hits in five innings. The Cardinals open interleague play at home tonight against the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays. You can hear the games this weekend on KSMO Radio.
Jose Guillen went 2-for-4 with a home run and finished with three runs batted in, as the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with an 8-4 victory. Joey Gathright, Miguel Olivo and Mark Teahen added an RBI apiece in the win. Gil Meche (3-5) got the win after he went seven innings, yielding three runs on six hits while fanning seven and walking two. Kansas City travels to Florida to begin interleague play tonight against the Marlins.

A Memorial Mass for Elbertine “Mickey” Kiefer of Rolla, age 90, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the St. Patrick’s Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services for Viola Jewel Parsons of Salem, age 94, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation is tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Salem or the American Cancer Society.
Funeral services for Clifford Wilson Drew of St. James formerly of Lecoma, age 86, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be Saturday from noon until time of service.
Graveside services for Clara Louise Leka Thomas of Steelville, age 86, will be held Monday afternoon at 3:00 at the Mechanicsburg Cemetery in Illinois. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.
