State Auditor Tom Schweich released reports for five of Missouri's 20 solid waste management districts that included the District K, the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District. District K includes the counties of Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington. The audit was to evaluate the district's internal controls over significant management and financial functions. Evaluate the district's compliance with certain legal provisions, and evaluate the economy and efficiency of certain management practices and operations, including certain financial transactions. In the areas audited, the overall performance of this entity was excellent. State law prohibits districts from spending more than 50 percent of allocated revenues for district operations and implementation of a solid waste management plan. The districts audited complied with this requirement. The State Auditor is also currently conducting an audit of the Department of Natural Resources' Solid Waste Management Program, which will address the costs incurred and the efficiency of the delivery of waste management services.

Roadway maintenance continues in our area. In Crawford County, roadway maintenance will take place on Highway 8 between Highway 19 and Route Y through Thursday. Roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 19 between I-44 and the Gasconade County Line and on Route C at the Bourbon city limits through Thursday. Roadside maintenance will take place on Route M between Highway 8 and Route YY through Thursday. Also in Crawford County, roadside maintenance will take place on Route V between Highway 19 and Route Y on Monday, May 20^th through Thursday, May 23^rd. In Phelps County, roadway resurfacing and signal upgrades continue on Highway 72 between Highway 63 and County Road 5220 as contractors will pave Highway 72 between Highway 63 and Route O during the overnight hours this week. The project is scheduled for completion this fall. Bridge maintenance will take place on Route B over Clear Creek, south of County Road 1220 in Phelps County now through Thursday, May 23^rd. As summer heats up, so does safety belt enforcement. Law enforcement officers are cracking down on unbelted drivers May 20-June 2 for an aggressive national “Click It or Ticket” campaign.  Even with all the advancements in automobile safety and education on the importance of seat belt use, Missouri’s seat belt use remains relatively unchanged at 79 percent, and consistently below the national average of 86 percent. Through this campaign the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety will remind Missourians to buckle up, day and night, through state and national advertisements. In 2012, 394 people killed in traffic crashes were not wearing a safety belt. Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way to reduce injuries and fatalities in a crash because it provides protection from being ejected and keeps motorists from smashing into windshields, dashboards and other passengers. When worn correctly, seat belts can reduce the risk of death for front seat occupants of passenger cars by 45 percent. For more information about Click It or Ticket, visit www.saveMOlives.com.

Captain Lee Ann H. Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announced the results of a DWI saturation patrol conducted in Phelps County from 7:00 Friday night, May 10^th, until 3:00 in the morning, Saturday, May 11^th. During the operation, troopers placed special emphasis on patrolling those highways where in the past a higher number of impaired drivers were either involved in a traffic crash or arrested for DWI. During the enforcement operation troopers stopped 34 vehicles and issued 34 warnings. They also issued citations for a felony DWI, a speeding violation, nine seat belt violations, two hazardous moving violations, a non-moving traffic offense, two driver’s license Violations and an uninsured motorists violation. The highway patrol made two misdemeanor warrant arrests, a felony warrant arrest and one felony arrest. Troopers issued 23 citations for failure to wear a seat belt.

Troop I officers will also be participating in special enforcement operations with the objective of reducing traffic crashes during the Memorial Day weekend. Throughout the weekend, troopers within Troop I and throughout the state will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort). Additional enforcement projects include the statewide 20-Mile Trooper project and High Enforcement Contact Teams. Troop I's High Enforcement Contact Teams will be assigned to patrol secondary highways during the peak travel periods on Friday, May 24, and Monday, May 27, 2013. The 20-Mile Trooper project consists of troopers being assigned to 20-mile stretches of Interstate 44. The troopers assigned to both projects will be tasked with vigorously enforcing all traffic laws and helping any motorist that needs assistance. These officers are in addition to those who will be assigned regular patrol duties over the holiday weekend. This year's counting period will begin at 6 p.m., Friday, May 24, and will run until 11:59 p.m., Monday, May 27, 2013.

Carlos Beltran battered his former team with three hits, including a three-run homer, and knocked in four runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals take a 10-4 win over the slumping New York Mets. Allen Craig drove in a pair and Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday, and Pete Kozma drove in a run apiece for the streaking Cardinals, who have captured 11 of their last 13 contests. The Cardinals and Mets play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio 1340 AM at 6:40.

Howie Kendrick went 3-for-4 with a solo homer as the LA Angels of Anaheim downed the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in the second of a three-game set. Billy Butler went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI for the Royals, losers in four of their last five. Kansas City's Jeremy Guthrie (5-1) saw his 18-start unbeaten streak come to an end. The Royals and Angels play again tonight.

Funeral services for Linda Lee McMullin of Kansas City, formerly of Bunker, age 64 will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.  Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Westfork-Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the McMullin Family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Lottie M. Callen of Rolla, age 95, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Mortuary. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Patrick Michael Broyles of Marshfield and formerly of Rolla, age 45, will be held Monday, May 20^th at 11:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Vineyard Christian. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
