The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5150, 6220 and 6240. Purcell said that materials would be added to Dent County Road 5460 and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6500. He reported that a worker would be screening brown rock at the shed, and that a work crew would be rebuilding the access landing with clay on Dent County Road 6070 lonto Highway 32. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers will be installing a culvert and adding materials to Dent County Roads 4280 and 4300. He went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2135 and 6140. Larson reported that he met with Nick Girondo from the Missouri Department of Conservation and Great Rivers Engineering about the bridge on Dent County Road 3210. They will be back on Thursday to shoot grade and see if a temporary bypass can be put in until a new bridge can be installed, possibly where the old bridge was when the road went straight. They will let Commissioner Larson know what they find. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he would be attending a County Commissioner Association meeting of Missouri on Wednesday. He said that the state has reduced the assessment per parcel reimbursement another 41 cents and that means that counties are only being reimbursed $3.00 per parcel. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 4:25 Monday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 32 about seven miles west of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 19-year old Ryan Pickle of Columbia was driving a 1996 Ford Mustang at a high rate of speed and failed to negotiate a curve. The Ford then traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Pickle suffered serious injuries and was flown by Air Evac to the University Hospital in Columbia. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.
An accident occurred Saturday afternoon at 4:40 in Dent County on Highway 32 about 13 miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Dodge driven by 33 year-old Erin Gilliland of Fredericktown ran off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected, traveled off the left side of the roadway, and overturned. Gilliland suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The Dodge was totaled and towed by Whitaker’s Towing. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.
The letter carriers and the US Postal Service wants to thank all those who helped this year with the collection of non-perishable food items this past Saturday. In Salem and Dent County, the letter carriers collected about 1,400 pounds of food. The food collected will go to local food pantries.
Thirteen Dent County students were among the 116 students who were honored for their winning entries in the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District's 2012 Earth Day Poster and Trash Art Contest. Some 625 entries consisting of 474 posters, 27 electronic posters and 124 trash art creations were received from 20 schools in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, and Washington counties. Contest winners from Dent County included: 11th graders Cathy Richards with Honorable Mention electronic art and Matt Chamberlain 2nd place trash art, both from RTI at the Salem High School under the leadership of Teacher Mrs. Yowell. The rest of the winners were from the New Harmony Christian Academy, under the leadership of Teacher Ms. Wells: 2nd graders Lara Stevens 1st place trash art; Sydney McKinney, 2nd place tie trash art; Isaac Limbaugh, 2nd place tie trash art; and Toby Hutto, Honorable Mention trash art. Under the leadership of Teacher Mr. Horton: in 3rd grade were: Kendra Morago, 1st place trash art; Dawson Thomas, Honorable Mention trash art; in 4th grade: Cole Laws, 2nd place trash art and Randalyn Kulp, Honorable Mention trash art; and for the 5th grade: Lauren Horton, 1st place trash art; and Hayden Gotchal, 2nd place trash art, and under the leadership of Teacher Mrs. West: 3rd grader Sarah Brown, 2nd place trash art. First-place winners will receive an earth-friendly gift valued at $25; second-place winners will receive an earth-friendly gift valued at $15.
The Public Water Supply District #1 of Dent County will conduct their monthly meeting tonight at the Dent County Community Center beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the Board will approve the minutes from the previous meeting and disbursements. They will hear reports including financial reports, the water testing report, the President’s report and a bookkeeping report. The Board will then have a general discussion as well as address any new business. The Board may vote to go into Closed Session. This meeting is open to the public.

George Lada hit a home run and drove in two runs to help lead the Mountain Grove Panthers to a 3-1 win over Salem in district play. Lada also pitched seven innings giving up five hits and shut down the Tigers after they loaded the bases with no one out in the 7th inning. Salem finished the year with a 12-10 record except for the game to be played in St. Louis on May 26th.
Bryan LaHair hit a two-run homer as the Cubs bested the Cardinals, 6-4, in the first of a two-game set on Monday. Yadier Molina doubled in two runs for St. Louis, who have lost four in a row. Cardinal starter Jake Westbrook surrendered four runs on 11 hits and two walk in five innings. The Cards and Cubs play again this afternoon and you can hear it on KSMO at 12:10.
Alcides Escobar's two-run single in the fifth inning was the difference as the Kansas City Royals downed the Texas Rangers, 3-1, in the opener a two-game series. Bruce Chen (2-4) allowed a run on five hits and two walks while striking out seven through 6 2/3 innings for the Royals, who earned their third straight win and their fifth in six games. The Royals and Rangers play again tonight.

A memorial service for Bebincio “Ben” Lliaban of Rolla, age 88, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Apartments in Rolla. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
Funeral services for Osa M. Allen of Salem, age 95, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Fair Haven’s Home in Strafford.
Funeral services for Andrew Howard Salter of Rolla, age 60, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 10:00 Thursday morning until service time. Interment will be in the Fort Leonard Wood Veteran’s Cemetery with full military honors.
Funeral services for Annette W. Spencer of Rolla, age 74, will be announced at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
