An accident occurred at 10:57 Tuesday morning in Dent County on Highway 72 about a mile north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2012 ford Escape driven by 69-year old Jerry Ball of Bunker was slowing to turn and was struck from behind by a 2005 Dodge 1500 pickup driven by 24-year old Elijah Crowder of Viburnum. A passenger in the Ford, 65-year old Elizabeth Ball of Bunker sustained minor injuries and was transported by Salem EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Everyone involved was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge pickup sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene, while the Ford Escape sustained moderate damage and was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened Saturday morning at 12:20 in Cole County on Route BB about 1/10^th of a mile west of Robinett Lane. According to the highway patrol report 74-year old Lloyd D. Hodges of Salem was driving a 2006 Dodge Dakota eastbound, when he fell asleep at the wheel, traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree head-on. Hodges suffered moderate injuries and was transported by an ambulance to the Capital Regional Hospital in Jefferson City. Hodges was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dakota was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Tow Pro.

Hunters posted the third spring turkey harvest increase in a row, bettering last year’s number by more than 1,000 birds. Hunters checked 43,273 turkeys during Missouri’s regular spring turkey season April 21 through May 11. Top harvest counties were Texas with 938 birds checked, Franklin with 921, and Laclede with 736. Hunters age 6 through 15 checked 4,332 turkeys during the youth season April 12 and 13, bringing the 2014 spring harvest total to 47,605. That is the third consecutive increase since 2011, when the combined youth and regular season harvest was 42,226. Favorable weather throughout much of this year’s spring turkey season helped hunters. This year’s harvest was also affected by improvements in turkey production. Prior to 2011, the state’s turkey population had struggled through four consecutive years of poor hatches. The improved hatches of 2011 and 2012 resulted in an increase in the number of adult gobblers available for hunters this spring. The Conservation Department recorded seven firearms-related spring turkey-hunting incidents during the regular season and one during the youth season. Two of the incidents in the regular season were fatal. Five of the seven incidents, including one of the fatalities, involved shooters who mistook other hunters for turkeys. Missouri’s safest spring turkey season was last year, when the Conservation Department recorded only one incident, which was nonfatal. The worst was 1986, with 31 reported incidents and two fatalities.

The Salem Police Department released more reports. On Tuesday, May 6^th at 4:47 in the morning, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1100 block of South Jackson in reference to a disturbance. The investigation led to the arrest of a 27-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Wednesday, May 7^th at 12:56 in the early morning, an officer made contact with a 20-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant. He was taken into custody near Highway 32 and Askins and incarcerated pending a court appearance. Later that same morning at 6:53, an officer was detailed to Walmart in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of an 18-year old Rolla female for stealing merchandise. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that evening at 5:53, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 800 block of West Rolla in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 35-year old Salem male had assaulted a 14-year old Salem female. He was arrested and incarcerated pending the application for warrants. Later that night at 9:07, an officer went to a residence in the 700 block of North Pershing and made contact with a 49-year old Salem male who had an active arrest warrant from Crawford County. He was taken into custody and incarcerated pending extradition.  On Thursday, May 8^th at 12:30 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to Casey's General Store located on Highway 32 in reference to a fight in progress. That investigation led to the arrest of a 41-year old male and a 37-year old male, both of Salem, for disorderly conduct. Both were issued summons to appear in court and released. The Salem Tiger baseball game with Union Tuesday was postponed due to rain and will not be made up. Athletic Director Phillip Karr announced the baseball game with Rolla scheduled for Thursday at 4:30 in Salem would now be played in Rolla Thursday at 5:30. Greg Garcia was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 12^th inning and the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Chicago Cubs, 4-3, in the second matchup of a four-game set. Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright was charged with two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts over six innings. The Cardinals and Cubs play again tonight and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed pitcher Tyler Lyons on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a left shoulder strain. St. Louis also recalled pitchers Sam Freeman and Jorge Rondon from Triple-A Memphis and optioned pitcher Eric Fornataro to its top minor league affiliate.

Lorenzo Cain stroked a two-run homer as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Colorado Rockies, 5-1, on Tuesday. Salvador Perez went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Alcides Escobar drove in two runs for the Royals. James Shields surrendered just one run five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks across seven innings. The Royals and Rockies play again today.

The Kansas City Royals placed second baseman Omar Infante on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with lower back disc irritation, retroactive to May 7. The Royals selected the contract of infielder Pedro Ciriaco from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move.

The St. Louis Blues have named former Carolina Hurricanes head coach Kirk Muller assistant coach. Muller, 48, spent parts of the past three seasons as head coach of the Hurricanes.

Funeral services for Martha L. Paulsen of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 68, will be held today at 3:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

Funeral services for Leora M. Hayes of Salem, age 80, will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cavanaugh Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
