The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Deputy Wayne Becker and Sheriff Rick Stallings were in attendance to discuss the Sheriff’s Revolving Fund Budget. Becker says this budget takes in the money for the applications for Concealed Carry Weapon permits and also pays the expenses associated with the permits. This year, there have already been 141 new CCW applications, three transfers and 49 renewals. This has totally exceeded the budget numbers for the year of 2013 and he suggested amending the budget. He would like to amend the revenues for the fund from $17,040 to $45,373; and amend the expenses from $16,497 to $37,813. The commissioners then set the budget amendment hearing for May 30^th at 10:00. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5220, 5440, 6040 and 6460, while materials will be added and grading will be done on Dent County Road 5180. He also stated that two men would be hauling gravel from the creek and one man would be screening rock. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2020, 4050 and 4060, while materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 4430. He also indicated that a man would be hauling rock and another screening rock. Larson said that he received a phone call from MoDOT saying that the BRO funds from MoDOT can be used for the bridge replacement on Dent County Road 3210. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the Public Housing Authority funds have been cut and they will be using $70,000 of their reserves to cover vouchers while they are still trying to reduce expenses. He also said that the MRPC was going to have to reduce expenses by $200,000 due to the Sequestration cuts. To try and reach that goal, the MRPC has cut two full-time staff members, reduced hours for others and have reduced some benefits for employees. Skiles did say that he would be attending a CCAM meeting this Wednesday in Jefferson City to discuss the annual training motel contract situation and also to hear legislative updates. He said the latest update is on Senate Bill 42 that could include an increase in salaries of county sheriff’s up to $116,800 through the use of a special fund. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that absentee voting for the June 4^th election continues. Bill Black, the new Superintendent of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Van Buren, was in attendance to visit with the commission. He did say that they expected the Sequestration cuts and were able to eliminate the 5% from their budget through interpretive and education program staff reductions, reducing mowing and minor maintenance, and eliminating the public tours of the Round Springs Cave. He did tell the commissioners that the new General Management Plan for the Ozark National Scenic Riverways will be available online by June 30^th and in paper form sometime in July. He said that he would like to make people more aware of the year-round beauty of this area and to utilize all the resources that the area has to offer from floating and fishing to camping and hiking. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

Aya Katz, whose lastest historical novel  is Theodosia and the Pirates, will be the guest speaker at the Dent County Historical Society's Speaker Series at the Bank of Salem Meeting Room in Downtown Salem at 6:00 tonight. Katz will talk about her experience as an editor with Inverted-A Press, Licking, MO, which published her latest novel. Katz will tell about what to expect when publishing with an independent press and the advantage over self-publishing and vanity presses. Theodosia and the Pirates is set duing the War of 1812  and has Jean Laffite and Theodosia Burr, daughter of Aaron Burr, as its main characters. The novel explores both romantic issues and heroic deeds.  Come and ask questions and find out from a local book publisher the how's and why's of the business and share her excitement about the historical events of the War of 1812. Listening to her talk makes one want to read her book Theodosia and the Pirates. The program is free and open to the public. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will hold a public auction for various used vehicles and equipment on Saturday, June 1, starting at 10 a.m. at its Salem Maintenance Center, 1715 Hwy 32 West. The auction will include several dozen vehicles, along with ATVs, trailers, boats, outboard motors and other equipment. A complete lot listing and terms of the sale will also be available at the registration desk the day of the auction. Pre-registration the day before the auction is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Registration the day of the sale begins at 7:30 a.m. Those interested can also view auction items the day before at the Maintenance Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Salem Tiger Baseball team lost to the Eldon Mustangs in the District Semifinals in Sullivan on Monday, 4-1. Lane Stluka drove in the lone run for the Tigers, who finish the year with a record of 14-10.

The Salem Tiger 14U baseball team took 1^st place this past weekend in O’Fallon, Illinois out of 17 teams, going undefeated. The team is coached by Brock Cook and Tony Floyd and includes Dalton Cook, Eli Floyd, Jacob Pryor, Kory Ramsey, Kobe Mead, Logan Woolf, Jon Arzt, Cody Manthey, Nate Bray, and Couper Davis. Congratulations Tigers!

Matt Holliday hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run seventh inning in the St. Louis Cardinals' 6-3 victory over the New York Mets on Monday in the opener of a four-game set at Busch Stadium. Matt Carpenter had two RBI singles, while Allen Craig and Jon Jay each drove in one run for the Cardinals. Lance Lynn (6-1) allowed all three New York runs on four hits. The right-hander walked five, but struck out seven for St. Louis, which has won 10 of 12. The Cardinals and Mets play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio at 6:40.

Billy Butler went 5-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 11-4 rout of the LA Angels of Anaheim in the opener of a three-game set at Angel Stadium. Salvador Perez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Lorenzo Cain added three hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Royals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. The Royals and Angels play again tonight.

Funeral services for Rodney “Rod” Collier of Cuba, will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Davisville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Patrick Michael Broyles of Marshfield and formerly of Rolla, age 45, will be held Monday at 11:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Rolla. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 at the Vineyard Christian Fellowship. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.

Funeral services for Linda Lee McMullin of Kansas City, formerly of Bunker, age 64 will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.  Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Chapel. Interment will be in the Westfork-Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials may be made to the McMullin Family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel.

Funeral services for Lottie M. Callen of Rolla, age 95, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.  Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Mortuary. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens in Rolla. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
