The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that rock would be added to Dent County Roads 6370 and 6410. He also said that a number of culverts would be cleaned out and a grader would be serviced. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that crews would be putting in a couple of crossover pipes on Dent County Road 3140 and material would be hauled to that road as well. Materials are also going to be hauled to Dent County Road 2303. He also said that a truck would be going to Phelps County to get a load of cold mix to patch chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a Salem Area Community Betterment Association meeting and discussed the upcoming sesquicentennial celebration. SACBA reported that they are still waiting for the USDA funds to expand the Farmer’s Market and the asphalting of the driveway. They did thank the county for the adding of material and grading at the Farmer’s Market. Skiles said that the Gazebo was placed on the courthouse lawn Wednesday. The Commissioner then heard from Kathleen Morrissey and Meredith Sisco from the West Plains Council on the Arts. They are interested in developing a regional cultural heritage project that would encompass Dent as well as nine other counties that would be locally generated to promote cultural conservation and cultural tourism to help stimulate the regional economy. This project would be called the Ozark Heritage Project and will represent a collaboration between the West Plains Council on the Arts, Ozark Action, Inc. and the West Plains Campus of Missouri State University. This project is being funded with federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds received from the US Department of Health and Human Services. The ultimate goal is to gather, develop and begin implementing strategies for marketing the work of regional traditional artists; and to promote the region as a potential destination for cultural tourists and culturally engaged prospective retirees. This information would be derived from a feasibility study and the development of a website that would provide information to potential visitors a better understanding of what the region has to offer. Morrissey said that Dent County is far ahead of the other counties in the development of their cultural heritage, but they still want to be able to obtain more historical information from citizens in the county through interviews and public forums. At the last meeting, phone bids were taken on the fuel for the Road and Bridge Department. The commissioners agreed to go with low bid for unleaded fuel from MFA Oil of $2.324 per gallon and the low bid for diesel fuel from Hocker Oil of $2.359 per gallon. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles that reported that the sales tax revenues for the year 2010 are up $10,300 from the same time period last year. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Industrial Development Authority of Dent County held a meeting yesterday at the Bank of Salem boardroom. At the meeting, two new board members were introduced to the board: Jeff Sellers and Jack Todd. Officers were then elected. Donald Dodd was elected President with James Coffman elected as Vice-President. Joan Sample was then elected Secretary with Cameron Erway being elected to the Treasurer’s position. At the meeting, the financial statements were gone over in great detail for the new members. Ed Pratt, who is the advisor to the IDA, then explained the primary purpose of the IDA is to issue tax-free industrial bonds to businesses that qualify for those bonds to raise funds to expand. The board did approve spending up to $2,000 for a certified commercial appraisal to be done on the Small Miracles Building to see if it will help determine a better market price for the building for the owners in Florida, Bayview Asset Management Company. Pratt also reported that he is working with the financial auditors for the county on the EDA grant that has been closed out, and may have to work with a state auditor at a later date. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Salem Baseball Tigers game with Iberia Thursday was postponed yesterday due to wet grounds and will not be rescheduled. The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded 6^th in the district tournament scheduled to start tomorrow morning at 11:30 at Sullivan. The Tigers will face the Owensville Dutchmen. Bud Norris worked eight strong innings and Hunter Pence hit a three-run home run to help the Houston Astros down the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-1, to complete a three-game sweep. Norris (2-4) gave up just one run on six hits with eight strikeouts to help the Astros sweep a series of at least three games in St. Louis for the first time since April 12-14, 2004. Chris Carpenter (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up four runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts over eight innings for the Cardinals, who have lost seven of their last nine. Matt Holliday drove in the lone run. St. Louis hits the road for a three-game set in Cincinnati starting tonight at 5:50 on KSMO.

Alberto Callaspo hit a three-run homer and Zack Greinke threw six effective innings to pick up his first win of the season, as the Kansas City Royals snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the finale of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. David DeJesus went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for Kansas City, which managed to salvage a win in the series. Greinke (1-4) allowed three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out eight to pick up his first win on the season in his eighth start. Joakim Soria locked the game down in the ninth to record his eighth save of the season. The Royals will face the White Sox this weekend.

The Kansas City Royals fired manager Trey Hillman shortly after the team's 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday and replaced him with former big league skipper Ned Yost. The 47-year-old Hillman was notified prior to the game he would be dismissed, but insisted on managing the series finale. He had a 151-207 mark in two-plus seasons. Yost, 55, had been in the Royals front office, serving as a special advisor to baseball operations, a position he was appointed to in January. Yost spent 2003-2008 with Milwaukee and managed the Brewers to a 457-502 record, but was fired in September of 2008.

The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will he held July 12th thru 15th and July 19th thru 22nd from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for girl's entering 9th through 12 grades and from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm for girl's entering 6th through 8th grades. The Salem Lady Tiger Softball Summer Camp will be held at the blue field next to the old armory, the cost is $20 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested can pickup a form at the Salem High School or call Coach Davison at 729-6641.

The Salem Tiger Boys Summer Basketball Camp will he held June 1st thru 4th from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for boys entering 9th through 12 grades and from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for boys entering 5th through 8th grades. The Salem Tiger Boys Summer Basketball Camp will be held at the Salem High School gym, the cost is $30 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested can pickup a form at the Salem JH or call Coach Zenker. The deadline to register is TODAY.

FFuneral services for Louis Leon Albin of Steelville, age 71, will be held Saturday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00 to 8:00.

Funeral services for Jimmy Dean Jackson of Salem, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
