The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 6^th. The Secretary swore in the newly elected Board members and they are Liz Gruendel for a 4-year term, Stanley McElfresh for a 6-year term and Craig Smith for a 5-year term. Sandy Thomas asked the Board to accept her resignation from the Board of Directors. After much discussion, the Board agreed to accept the resignation and then appointed Grant Hamlet to fill the vacant position until the next April election and he was sworn in. The Board then held elections for the position of Board President, Secretary and Treasurer. Grant Hamlet was voted as the Board President and Dave Wells was voted in as Secretary/Treasurer. During the monthly reimbursement report, it was noted that during the month of April a total of 31 calls were completed. Of the 31 calls received, 30.5 percent were ambulance assists and motor vehicle accidents, 16 percent were structure fires and 14 percent were brush fires. In old business, Truck # 83 is repaired and back in operation. During the Chief’s Report, Nash noted that workman’s comp is due in June and the cost has increased. It will now cost $4,907. Nash reported that bids for the Fire Department insurance are in with VFIS at $14,504 and Fire Pak at $10,684. This insurance is a complete package to cover all equipment, liability, accident, crime, bonding and property. Fire Pak also had the best liability coverage of the bidders. Chief Nash reported that Mandatory Training for the Board Directors would be held May 31^st in St. James. President Grant Hamlet, Chief Brad Nash and Secretary/Treasurer Dave Wells plan on attending this meeting, and other Board members will attend a future scheduled training as they have schedule conflicts with this training date. Nash reported that the Board Ethics training would be available on Thursday, July 10^th. Hamlet and Nash will be attending this training in Jefferson City. Chief Nash also reported that he had received complaints that he and his wife having been seen driving the taxpayers fire department vehicle for personal use. After investigating the complaint, Nash found that they were referring to the Blazer which is the Chief’s own personal vehicle. The Blazer is Nash’s own private family vehicle, and all the upkeep, fuel, and the lettering was paid for by him personally. The Board agreed that this issue needed to be addressed and thank Chief Nash for bringing it to their attention. Bids were then presented for propane for the 2008-2009 year. The motion was made to accept the bid from Titan Propane at $2.15 per gallon locked in price for any quantity. The next meeting of the Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors will be Tuesday, June 3^rd at 6:00 pm at the District building.

Senator Frank Barnitz announced that District Legislative Assistant Wilma Rowden would continue her listening posts in May at locations throughout the 16^th Senate District. On Thursday, May 15^th, Rowden will be at the Phelps County Courthouse with the Commission from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. Then on Monday, May 19^th, Rowden will be in Salem at the Dent County Commission from 9:00am to 11:00 am. Those who cannot make it to the listening posts can contact Rowden in the District office by calling (573) 201-6207.

The Central Missouri Agency on Aging is seeking a senior citizen to run for the Silver Haired Legislature. All of the Silver Haired Legislators that are elected statewide meet to discuss and debate bills that will be going to the Missouri General Assembly and concern all senior citizens statewide throughout the year. Elizabeth Broughton has volunteered to accept the challenge to run for the office of senator and represent Crawford, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Dent, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington Counties. All seniors are encouraged to vote at the Senior Centers in their county on Tuesday May 20^th. 

The Dent County Arts and Crafts Guild will be having their spring craft show this Saturday at the Salem City Hall Auditorium. The show will begin at 9:00 in the morning and stay open until 4:00.

The next Relay for Life meeting will be held tomorrow at 5:30 at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room.

The Spring Sports Banquet will be held on Thursday, May 15th at the Salem High School Cafeteria starting at 6:30 pm. There will be a night of recognition for the Varsity and Junior Varsity baseball, track, golf and tennis athletes and their parents are invited to attend to honor the 2008 Spring Season.    

Marino Salas, a 27-year-old making his major league debut the same day he was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and picked up his first career win in Pittsburgh's 8-4, 10-inning win over the Cardinals, the opener of a three- game set. Ron Villone (0-1) was ripped for four hits and four runs in the 10th to take the loss for the Cardinals, who have dropped three straight and six of seven. Albert Pujols belted a game-tying homer in the eighth for St. Louis. Starter Kyle Lohse gave up five hits and four runs in seven frames. Troy Glaus hit a three-run homer in the 6th inning for the Cardinals. The cards and Pirates play again tonight at 6:55 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Zack Greinke threw six solid innings, Jose Guillen hit a two-run double, and the Kansas City Royals used a Detroit error to edge the Tigers, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set. Guillen finished the game with a pair of doubles, while Mark Grudzielanek went 3-for-4 for the Royals, who have won two in a row. Greinke gave up two runs on nine hits, with a pair of strikeouts and walks each, in the no-decision. Leo Nunez (3-0) threw two-thirds of an inning in relief, while Joakim Soria -- who hasn't allowed a run in 15 1/3 innings this season -- earned his ninth save of the season. Mark Teahen and John Buck each had two hits for the Royals. The two teams play again tonight.

Funeral services for Terry Lynn Roberts of Salem, age 54, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Jude Cancer Trail Ride.

A Memorial Mass for Elbertine “Mickey” Kiefer of Rolla, age 90, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the St. Patrick’s Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
