The Salem Baseball Tigers season came to an end Saturday at the hands of the Union Wildcats as Kevin West struck out 15 Salem Tigers en route to a 6-0 shutout. Salem had only three hits and were given three walks and two hit batsmen, all in the first four innings, but could never get the key hit. All six Union runs were scored with two outs including four runs in the third inning. Salem finished the season with an 11-7 record.
Justin Germano allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set at Petco Park. Germano (1-0) struck out three and walked none. Scott Linebrink pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth, picking up his 10th save in 12 chances. Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Padres, who have won two of their last three games. Anthony Reyes (0-6) allowed three runs, five hits and three walks over five frames for the Cardinals, who have lost two of three. The Cardinals were shut out for the sixth time, the most in the major leagues. The Cardinals will be in Los Angeles tonight to face the Dodgers and you can hear the game on KSMO starting at 9:00.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's finale of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres. Encarnacion, who began the season on the disabled list due to offseason wrist surgery, started in right-field and finished 0-for-3. To make room on the roster, St. Louis optioned outfielder Skip Schumaker to Triple-A Memphis. Schumaker was hitting .233 with three RBI in 28 game
David DeJesus had four hits, scored three times and drove in a pair of runs to guide the Kansas City Royals past the Chicago White Sox, 11-1, in the finale of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Mark Teahen hit a three-run homer and Tony Pena had two RBI for the Royals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jorge De La Rosa (4-3) allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings to pick up the victory. The Royals placed pitcher Luke Hudson on the 15-day DL (retroactive to May 11) with right biceps tendinitis, and recalled Brian Bannister from Triple-A Omaha. The Royals will be in Oklaand tonight to face the Athletics.
