Dent County residents will be able to learn why the county commission is considering rural addressing, as well as what it will mean for the county and how much it will cost. There will be a meeting tonight at the Salem City Hall auditorium beginning at 7:00 PM. This is your opportunity to ask questions and find out the answers. The rural addressing will not affect the City of Salem.

Serendipity will be held at the Salem Upper Elementary School on Thursday, May 17th and their theme this year is “Under the Sea.”  Children can find out how to create beautiful music while playing a variety of instruments with the Salem High School Band, learn all about the working parts of a fire truck from the Dent County Fire Protection District, watch a demonstration by the Salem Police Department will the drug dog present and kids can experience the duties of being patrolman. Children can experience life as a soldier from the American Legion Color Guard, they can learn to be an actor or be a clown presented by the High School Drama Class, or they can tour an ambulance, take a mini CPR course and learn first aid from the Salem Memorial District Hospital personnel. These are just some of the outstanding events that will be offered at this year’s Serendipity. Overall, a total of 39 different “classes” will be available to the youngsters. Serendipity is a community event with all areas of life in Dent County represented and presented by the people who practice these events. The coordinators this year for the event were Rebecca Mitchell and Melanie Wisdom. The drinks were donated by the Bank of Salem, the popcorn was donated by Progressive Ozark Bank and the hospitality room was made possible by donations from numerous local businesses. The Upper Elementary School wants to thank all those employers who allow their staff members to leave work to present these programs to the children of the community. Serendipity was recognized as a Success Link DESE Best Practice back in 1999.

The City of Salem’s Capitol Improvement Committee will hold a meeting this morning beginning at 10:00 AM in the City Hall Council Chambers regarding a 2007/2008 Budget request. This meeting was called by Mayor Gary Brown, and it is open to the public. 

Roadwork continues this week in the KSMO listening area. In Crawford County, MoDOT crews will pave over the roadway surface to restore smooth ride on Routes 19 and 49, crews will replace drainage pipes near the roadway on Routes C and P, and MoDOT crews will be painting turn arrows and stop blocks, mowing the right-of-way and replace, install and/or maintain roadway signs on various routes in Crawford County. In Dent County MoDOT crews will pave over the roadway surface to restore smooth ride on Routes 32 and 72 in Dent County. In Phelps County, MoDOT crews will perform work to improve drainage. Drain work keeps the roadway dry and maintains stability and proper drainage of water from the travel lanes on Route O and MoDOT crews will patch potholes to restore shape and roadway stability and replace, install and/or maintain roadway signs on various routes in Phelps County.  Motorists are urged to exercise caution while passing through work zones. Workers may be on or near the roadway. Signs will be posted and flag persons will be present in areas where traffic will be impacted. The Salem Public Library will hold their next older adult program tomorrow at 10:00 at the library meeting room. The topic of the program is “It was THE Place to Meet!” The group will talk about favorite places to meet like a local soda shop, Sunday potluck dinners etc. The program is designed for adults 50 years of age and older.

The Salem Baseball Tigers season came to an end Saturday at the hands of the Union Wildcats as Kevin West struck out 15 Salem Tigers en route to a 6-0 shutout. Salem had only three hits and were given three walks and two hit batsmen, all in the first four innings, but could never get the key hit. All six Union runs were scored with two outs including four runs in the third inning. Salem finished the season with an 11-7 record.

Justin Germano allowed just three hits in seven shutout innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the finale of a three-game set at Petco Park. Germano (1-0) struck out three and walked none. Scott Linebrink pitched a perfect eighth and Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth, picking up his 10th save in 12 chances. Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Padres, who have won two of their last three games. Anthony Reyes (0-6) allowed three runs, five hits and three walks over five frames for the Cardinals, who have lost two of three. The Cardinals were shut out for the sixth time, the most in the major leagues. The Cardinals will be in Los Angeles tonight to face the Dodgers and you can hear the game on KSMO starting at 9:00.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Juan Encarnacion was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to Sunday's finale of a three-game series with the San Diego Padres. Encarnacion, who began the season on the disabled list due to offseason wrist surgery, started in right-field and finished 0-for-3. To make room on the roster, St. Louis optioned outfielder Skip Schumaker to Triple-A Memphis. Schumaker was hitting .233 with three RBI in 28 game

David DeJesus had four hits, scored three times and drove in a pair of runs to guide the Kansas City Royals past the Chicago White Sox, 11-1, in the finale of a three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. Mark Teahen hit a three-run homer and Tony Pena had two RBI for the Royals, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Jorge De La Rosa (4-3) allowed just one run on three hits over seven innings to pick up the victory. The Royals placed pitcher Luke Hudson on the 15-day DL (retroactive to May 11) with right biceps tendinitis, and recalled Brian Bannister from Triple-A Omaha. The Royals will be in Oklaand tonight to face the Athletics.

Graveside services will be held for Burton E Ijames, of Bunker, age 63, this morning at 11:00 at the Green Forest Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary.

Funeral services for Gary Ray Baker of Newburg, age 53, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Rolla Chapel of the James and Gahr Mortuary. Interment will be in the Mount Olive Cemetery in Doolittle.

Funeral services will be held for Lindsay Ernest Faulkner, of Bixby, age 83, this afternoon at 2:00 at the Boss assembly of God Church. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

A Memorial service for nine-month old Isaiah Arturo Main, of Rolla, will be held Tuesday night at 7:00 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Salem. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.
