The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams came in and reported the sales tax this May came in $12,387.71 more than May of 2013. For the year-to-date, the 2014 totals for General Revenue are $35,957.51 more than the 2013 totals, and the Law Enforcement Sales Tax figures year-to-date are up $35,900.11 more than the 2013 totals. The increase in the county sales tax revenues in 2014 are up so far about 12.18%. Williams also mentioned that the drug court expenses submitted by Kelly Jamison-Smith have exceeded her budgeting amount of $5,000. She submitted three different warrants that totaled $5,493.12. The commission paid one for $1,046. Jamison-Smith then came in and requested an increase in the expense portion of the Drug Court Budget to $15,000 to cover the increase in costs. A budget hearing has been scheduled for June 2^nd to take care of that budget adjustment. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5450, 6060, 6085, 6410 and 6420, while materials would be added to county road 6080. Purcell stated that tires were being replaced on Dent County trucks 117 and 121. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that parts of northwest Dent County received from 2 to 3 inches of rain that caused some washouts. Workers will be adding material and grading will be done on Dent County Road 2150. Grading will also be done on county roads 3370, 4020, 4400 and 4403. Larson stated that a bus driver reported a tree leaning out over the road on county road 2020 that workers will take care of and one man will be screening brown rock. Larson also said some work was done on the emergency generator at the Oak Grove Baptist Church and it was also checked. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles indicated the Ozark Solid Waste Management District Executive Board met last week and they are preparing for the next round of grants. Even though the grant packets are not quite ready, those with recycling ideas should contact Lucky or Tammy at 573-265-2993. He also attended the MRPC meeting, the PHA meeting, and the external relations committee meeting where they discussed the new slate of officers. Skiles is going to be the new chairman of the PHA for 2014-2015, and work is being done for the annual MRPC Dinner in November. He will also be attending a CCAM meeting in Jefferson City Wednesday where they will address some last minute legislative issues. Skiles and Dent County Clerk Angie Curley also discussed specific house bills and senate bills and the status of each. Curley also brought up some initiative petitions on early voting that may make it to the ballot that would increase the costs for rural areas to hold any election, plus the next Presidential Primary will be held March 15^th. Skiles also said the Senate voted to approve a measure that would increase the per diem reimbursement for prisoners by $3.00 that would go into the Law Enforcement Restitution Fund while the House passed the measure where the increase in per diem will go to General Revenue. Both the House and Senate have sent representatives to committee to work out a compromise in the bills. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Dent County Historical Society’s Dinner Speaker series continues tonight at the Salem Pizza Inn Meeting Room starting at 6:00. Sharon Duckworth English will be the presenter and she will bring with her family history that includes documents, books, and artifacts from as early as 1820 that was found when they updated the electric service in their home. What they found was a log cabin within the home, and the documents and artifacts were found in between the walls stricter and log cabin. Some of the family names connected to the Duckworth story include Anderson, Asbridge, Boyd, Cook, Cooley, Hoodenpyle, Hubbs, Johns, and Skeeters. The presentation is free and open to the public. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announced the results of a DWI saturation patrol conducted in Dent County that began at 7:00 pm Friday, May 2^nd and ended at 3:00 am on Saturday, May 3^rd. During the operation, troopers issued 40 warnings and made arrests or issued citations. There was one for DWI, two for speed, eight for failure to wear a seat belt, three hazardous moving violations, two non-moving traffic violations, two driving while suspended or revoked, three uninsured motorists, two misdemeanor criminal arrests and one felony warrant arrest. According to preliminary 2013 statistics, 239 motorists in Missouri were killed and 3,357 were injured in alcohol-related traffic crashes.

The Salem Tiger baseball team scheduled to host Union today at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field Complex, HAS BEEN CANCELLED. Salem is 8-11 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded 3^rd in the Class 4, District 9 Tournament that will begin this Saturday, May 17^th at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. The first game will be at 1:00 between St. James and Osage, while the second game will be at 3:30 and pit Salem vs Owensville. Then on Monday, the 19^th, the winner of the St. James-Osage game will play Sullivan at 4:00; and the winner of the Salem-Owensville game will play Eldon at 6:30. The championship game will be held on Wednesday, May 21st at 4:30. The admission price to each game is $4.00 per person who is six years old and above.

Junior Lake tallied six RBI, Emilio Bonifacio scored five runs, and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 17-5, in the opener of a four-game set. Tyler Lyons (0-3) gave up nine runs on nine hits and a walk over four innings for St. Louis, which has dropped three of its last four games. The Cardinals and Cubs play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but will start a two-game series with the Colorado Rockies tonight. The Royals are 18-19 on the year and trail Detroit by five games for the lead in the AL Central.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey was given a four-game suspension by the NFL Monday for a violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Bailey, a third-round pick in last year's draft who is expected to hold down an increased role this season, acknowledged the infraction but denied he used any performance-enhancing drugs.

Funeral services for Martha L. Paulsen of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 68, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
