The Missouri State Highway Patrol's Rural Crimes Unit, and the Missouri Farm Protection Task Force encourages the farming community to be extremely observant of activities in their community, and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. With the upcoming spring planting and hay-baling season, we encourage people who live in the rural areas to be mindful of the risks of equipment, livestock, and anhydrous ammonia thefts. Grazing animals are an easy target for thieves; therefore farmers are encouraged to watch the fields where animals are feeding, and to make sure gates and fences are in good condition. Field gates should have capping hinges so they cannot be easily removed. Cattle panels should be removed from the fields and stored in buildings when not in use, along with valuable equipment such as mowers, tractors, and balers. Machinery left in fields especially near roads, make equipment theft quick and easy. The farming industry has used anhydrous ammonia for a cost effective nitrogen-based fertilizer for many years. Criminals involved in the illegal manufacturing of Methamphetamine can also use this chemical and will target farm tanks as a source of supply. Since anhydrous ammonia is a critical component of the drug manufacturing process, the agriculture community can play an important role in protecting their community, business, and farms. Take the time to secure nurse tanks. Do not leave them in the field unattended. Signs of theft include activity near the tank such as footprints in the soil, tank valves that are not tightly closed or appear to be tampered with, items left near the tank such as duct tape, garden hose, plastic tubing, bicycle inner tubes, and coolers. The Missouri School Violence Hotline is trying a new way to generate tips. The telephone hotline has received hundreds of valid reports from across the state every year since it was created in 2001. Officials said the hotline has been adapted for its Web site as “Report It!” Just like the phone line, the Department of Public Safety wants students, parents and teachers to use the program to report fights, weapons at school, thefts, and bullying: all anonymously. For those who want to report an issue by phone, the hotline is 1-866-748-7047.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Monday, May 3^rd at 4:28 in the afternoon, firefighters were paged out due to a vehicle accident on Highway 19 south. Upon arrival six firefighters assisted the Salem ambulance with one female occupant. On Saturday, May 8^th at 6:00 in the evening, firefighters were paged out to setup a landing zone at the station. A total of eight fire department personnel responded. At 9:15 that same night, firefighters were paged out to assist the Salem ambulance with a patient at the Seville Care Center. A total of eight firefighters responded. On Monday, May 10^th at 3:58 in the afternoon, firefighters were paged out to assist the Salem ambulance with a patient at Seville Care Center. A total of six fire department personnel responded to the call. On Tuesday, May 11^th at 6:55 in the morning, firefighters were paged out to set up a secure landing zone at the station. A total of three fire department personnel responded to the call.

May is National Stroke Awareness Month and knowing the warning signs for strokes can help you or someone you know get the medical attention needed in time. Signs of a stroke include; sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; or sudden, severe headache with no known cause. Another rule to remember is the word FAST. The letter F is for face, ask the person to smile and look to see if one side of the face droops. The letter A is for the arm, ask the person to raise both arms and notice if one arm drifts downward. The letter S is for speech, ask the person to repeat a simple phrase and listen to see if the speech sound is slurred or strange. The letter T is for time, if you observe any of these signs, it is time to call 9-1-1. REMEMBER, time lost is brain lost.
