The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) officials will be in Salem Thursday morning to do damage assessments of residences and businesses sustaining damage from the storms of Friday, May 8^th. Any affected business, home owner or renter is being asked to fill out a damage assessment form at the Dent County Fire Protection District Firehouse located at #2 South Main Street in Salem, between the hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm today. Information from these assessments will be used to determine possible state and or federal disaster assistance.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a special meeting Tuesday evening at the district administrative offices where they accepted the resignations of Treva Satterfield as the Upper Elementary Special Ed Teacher; Mary Lansing as an Upper Elementary Aide, and Lori Barton as the High School Assistant Basketball Coach. The board also accepted the retirements of Ruth Ann Parker, bus driver Donald Smith and food service attendant Carol Smith. Superintendent Steve Bryant praised the efforts of the staff, support staff and students in carrying out the emergency disaster plan during last Friday’s storm. Bryant also went over the damages from the storm to all the schools that went from minor to moderate, but none were extensive enough to close the school. They board then heard from L. J. Hart and Company about assisting the district with financial planning for the future. This firm specializes in developing creative election strategies to fund capital improvements for school districts through the use of election brochures and news releases. Hart and Company provides this service at no cost to the district unless the election is successful. The firm explained to the board in detail the different ways that Salem R-80 could approach the August election. They could look at a proposition that had no tax increase with the use of zero interest qualified school construction bonds, one that had a tax increase using the zero interest qualified school construction bonds, and two propositions that have a tax increase without the use of the zero interest bonds. The board discussed placing the bond issue on the ballot after reviewing voter statistics from the November Presidential election and the April Municipal election. No decision was reached by the board to utilize the services of L.J. Hart and Company, and no decision was reached at this meeting on the bond issue, but the board will have to decide by May 26^th which is the deadline to have the bond issue placed on the ballot. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a surface leveling project for Iron and Reynolds Counties during it's May meeting. The project encompasses 18.545 miles of Routes KK and TT near Reynolds, and calls for surface leveling to extend the life of the existing pavement. The work has been awarded to Pace Construction Company LLC. of St. Louis, at a total project cost of $984,040.20. The Salem Tigers Spring Athletic Banquet will be held tonight at 6:00 at the Salem High School Cafeteria. The participants of Tennis, Baseball, Golf and Track will be honored for their efforts this evening.

Brandon Moss went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and Zach Duke pitched eight solid innings, as the Pittsburgh Pirates snapped an eight-game skid by defeating the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game series at PNC Park. Cardinal’s right fielder Ryan Ludwick left the game in the second inning after straining his right hamstring while attempting to run down a ball hit by Morgan, which turned out to be a triple. Todd Wellemeyer (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. The journeyman right-hander walked three and struck out four. Albert Pujols' first inning homer, his 13th of the year, was the only scoring by St. Louis in the game. The Cardinals and Pirates play again tonight starting at 5:45 on KSMO.

Orlando Cabrera went 3-for-5 with four runs batted in, as Oakland crushed Luke Hochevar in his season debut on the way to a 12-3 win over the Royals. Hochevar (0-1) struggled mightily in his first start of the year. The former No. 1 overall draft pick in 2006 took the roster spot vacated when closer Joakim Soria went to the disabled list because of right shoulder soreness.  Hochevar gave up a career-high eight runs on seven hits in just two innings of work Tuesday, as the Royals suffered their fourth consecutive loss. Sidney Ponson allowed four runs in two innings in relief of Hochevar, as Kansas City surrendered a season high in runs. Coco Crisp went 3-for-3 with a homer and Mitch Maier had two hits in the loss for Kansas City. The Royals and A's play again tonight.

Funeral services for Clyde Moser Dent of Salem, age 88, will be held this afternoon at 3:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials may be made to the Ministry Southwest Special Care Homes.

Funeral services for Pauline Nickles of Belleville, Illinois, age 91, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mount Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pat Edwards of Licking, age 77, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Kettner officiating. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Lutheran Missions. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Robert “Bob” Perkins of Steelville, age 61, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Pleasant Point Cemetery in Steelville. Memorials may be given to the Steelville City Park or the Jim Perkins Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Funeral services for Diane Bonebrake Schum, age 44, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mount Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family for funeral expenses.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the William Andrews Civil Engineering Scholarship at MST, First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Rolla Kiwanis club or charity of you choice.
