The Salem Police Department released their reports involving property damage and a traffic violation. On Thursday, May 6^th at 11:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to the 800 block of East Third Street in reference to a property damage report. The investigation revealed that between 9:30 pm and 11:00 pm, a person or persons unknown slashed four tires on the victim’s vehicle. The tires were valued at $200. On Saturday, May 8^th at 12:30 p.m. an officer was detailed to the Western Cherokee Nation in reference to property damage report. The investigation revealed between May 1^st at 12:30 p.m. and May 8^th at 12:30 p.m. a person or persons unknown had damaged the lock on the door to the gym. On Sunday, May 9^th at 6:30 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of a 73-year-old Salem man on a fugitive warrant from the Reynolds County Sheriff Department. He was incarcerated on the warrant pending extradition. The 2010 Serendipity will be held at the Salem Upper Elementary on Thursday, May 13^th. Serendipity is a way to discover new things from a variety of interesting people including; experience the duties of a patrolman by the Salem Police Department; learn about the working parts of a fire truck presented by the Dent County Fire Protection District; tour an ambulance, take a mini CPR course and learn first aid presented by the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Be an actor, or be a clown presented by the Salem High School Drama Club; learn to juggle with a touch of magic presented by the Salem High School Basketball Team; learn to play a variety of musical instruments presented by the Salem High School Band; you can learn to cheer by the Salem High School Cheerleaders; and play baseball while enjoying the game by the Salem High School Baseball Team and a whole lot more. Numerous local volunteers will complete the lineup of activities for the children tomorrow.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting last Tuesday night at the fire station. After approval of the agenda, the minutes were reviewed from the last meeting and approved, bills were discussed and approved and during the reimbursement review it was noted that a total of 34 fire calls came in during the month of April. In old business, Chief Brad Nash presented the Board with several different templates for regulations and suggestions for a policy for usage of the district facilities. After discussion, the Board decided to form a committee composed by Board member Liz Gruendel as Chairperson, Assistant Chief Dennis Floyd, Officer David Siler and Board President Grant Hamlet, to research and review options. That Board will report back to the Directors at the next meeting. In new business, Liz Gruendel took the floor to talk about completing the district facilities updates and improvements. Gruendel presented three options to acquire the monies needed. After a discussion, the Board agreed for her to move forward with the plan in stages. Chief Nash then reported that the officer replacement was in progress. Nash also reported that the inventory was still in the works. He also reported on the possibility of hosting the required class for Board members. It was agreed that Missouri University would provide the class if 15 people could be acquired. Nash also addressed the Board on the filling of high-pressure tanks for the public. After discussion, a motion was made that the district would no longer fill private citizen’s high-pressure tank bottles due to liability concerns. The Board then voted to set their next monthly meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 1^st the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm. The meeting was then adjourned.
