The Missouri Foundation for Health (MFH) has released the 2011 Missouri Medicaid Basics, an annual publication providing a straightforward, factual overview of the Missouri Medicaid program, now called MO HealthNet. The publication is intended as a resource for the public, care providers, community leaders and anyone seeking a clearer understanding of the MO HealthNet system. Produced by MFH’s health policy staff, the Missouri Medicaid Basics provides a clear framework for the state’s Medicaid program in three subject areas. They are the MO HealthNet-eligible populations; the programs and services for MO HealthNet recipients, and the Funding sources for MO HealthNet (state, federal, and other). The publication offers an explanation of MO HealthNet using a variety of easy-to-understand graphics and tables. New to the 2011 edition is a collection of graphics on MO HealthNet enrollment growth by eligibility group and region. There is updated information exploring the relationship between MO HealthNet enrollment and downturns in the state and national economies. The City of Salem Park Board will conduct a Park Board meeting at the Salem Freedom Activity Center located on West Rolla Road on Thursday, May 12^th beginning at 12:00 (noon). After the meeting is called to order, Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash will give his report. The Board will then review the pool rates for recommendation at the City of Salem Board of Alderman meeting on Monday. The meeting of the City of Salem Park Board is open to the public.

To help area residents properly dispose of unwanted electronics and appliances, a special waste collection is planned from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, May 14^th, at Hood Park located on Hood Drive in Cuba. The city of Cuba along with the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission are partnering together to host this year’s event. Appliances including stoves, washers, dryers, hot water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, air conditioners and other unwanted white goods—will be accepted free of charge. There is no fee this time for items containing freon. Commercial appliances cannot be accepted. Fees will be charged for televisions and monitors. Televisions will cost $5 for households and $10 for businesses. Each computer monitor will cost $5. You must unload the items yourself. Shooting that first turkey is a landmark event in a young hunter’s life. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) helps turn such milestones into mementoes. MDC’s First Turkey Program gives participants free commemorative certificates suitable for framing. You can even add a photo of the proud hunter with his or her bird. This tangible recognition of young hunters’ achievements provides permanent reminders that can either substitute for or complement a taxidermist’s mount. To create a first-turkey certificate, visit www.mdc.mo.gov/. The same site has forms for a youth’s first deer as well as first deer/turkey certificates for adults. The parallel program for anglers is the First Fish Program. The First-Fish certificate form is available at www.mdc.mo.gov/. Missouri remains a national leader in hunter and angler recruitment because of successful youth programs, hunter education, low cost permits and other efforts to promote hunting and fishing as healthful, sustainable outdoor activities.

There will be a scheduled power outage at 8:30 this morning by Intercounty Electric as work crews will be performing work at the Short Bend substation north of Salem. The communities of Short Bend, Howes and an area west of Sligo will be affected by this outage. The loss of power should last about 30 minutes. The work being performed is system upgrades as Intercounty crew members will be working with Sho-Me Power personnel during this outage which will correct the problems to the substation damaged during a storm about two weeks ago that required a portable substation to be used.

The Salem Spring Sports Banquet will be held tonight at 6:30 for varsity and JV teams for Boys and Girls Track, Tennis, Golf and Baseball. The athletes and their parents are invited to attend. The Tiger and Lady Tiger Award will be presented tonight at the banquet.

Salem Tigers Boys Basketball Camp will run from Tuesday May 31st – Friday June 3rd.  Camp Times are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m for boys entering 9 –12 grades and 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. for boys entering 5- 8 grades. Cost of the camp is $30.  Camp forms will be sent home with kids, but if you do not receive one, you can stop by the junior high and pick one up from Coach Nic Zenker. Camp Forms are due back Friday May 13th so that T-Shirts can be ordered.

There will be a Girls Softball Clinic for girls going into the 5th - 8th grades next school year at the City Park fields or the high school gym if it rains. The Girls Softball Clinic will be held 3 Saturdays in a row on May 14^th, May 21^st and May 28^th. The cost is $20 and the clinics will be held from 9:00 am until noon. The clinic will consist of 3 Saturdays of specialized drills and fundamental work that will increase your skill level. Each participate will receive a t-shirt. Daniel Descalso delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the eighth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the rival Chicago Cubs, 6-4, in the opener a three-game series. Nick Punto went 2-for-4 while driving in a run and scoring another for the Cardinals. Chris Carpenter (1-2) picked up his first win of the season despite allowing 13 hits and four runs in his seven-inning start. The Cards and Cubs square off again tonight on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.

Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run single in the fifth inning for the go-ahead runs and the New York Yankees held on to beat Kansas City, 3-1, in the opener of a three-game series. Former Yankee Melky Cabrera belted a solo homer for the Royals, who have lost seven straight on the road. Royals' starter Kyle Davies (1-5) took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. The two teams wil play again tonight in New York.

The Royals placed starting pitcher Bruce Chen on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a left lat strain and recalled pitcher Vin Mazzaro from Triple-A Omaha.
