The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. Bernie English was in attendance and made a public apology about his language at a commissioner meeting. He also submitted a letter to the commissioners that addressed the lack of accessibility to the second floor courtroom and third floor at the Dent County Courthouse and how this has been an ongoing problem. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that is one of the reasons why the county commissioners agreed to do the current study on the development of a new legal center versus just trying to find a short term band-aid to the accessibility problem that the people of the county may regret later as it could do permanent damage to the courthouse. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that workers would be checking and cleaning out culverts throughout the district. They will also be servicing grader #24 and repairing the dura-patcher for use on the chip and seal roads. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers would also be checking pipes as well as putting up signs. They will also be servicing a number of pieces of equipment as long as the rain continues. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was to attend a Community Betterment Board meeting Monday night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated that she and the Dent County Treasurer balanced on all accounts for the month of April. The Commissioners then voted on allowing the gazebo requested by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association to be placed on the courthouse lawn May 17th through August 16th. The commissioners agreed that the company should coordinate the location with the clerk’s office before it is securely placed on the lawn. Commissioner Purcell reported that Linda Ruhler from the Top of the Ozarks RC&D has put together a draft County Wildfire Protection Plan for Douglas County and she is going to forward that to Purcell as a basis for a plan for Dent County so that Dent County can use their Title III monies. At the last meting, Matt Lloyd with Fabick and Company came in to discuss the buyback on the two graders the county uses. The buyback will end in November 2011 with a $73,585 guarantee for each. The trade value now would be $90,000 each. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The City of Salem Park Board held their meeting Wednesday, May 5th at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash reported that almost 600 kids have signed up for the city’s summer youth t-ball/softball/baseball leagues. The numbers are comparable to years past with 49 different teams participating. Nash reported that there were 18 T-ball teams alone with over 200 kids involved. Practices have begun and games will start the week of May 24th and run through the first week of July. At the Aldermen’s request, the Park Board reviewed the pool rates and voted to make recommendations. The Park Board voted to set admission rates to $2 per person regardless of age for the daily general admission as well as water aerobics and adult swim. The Park Board recommended to eliminate the use of pool passes all together, both family and individual. The Park Board then voted to provide private pool parties on a nightly basis for a flat rat of $150 for two hours regardless of the number of people attending. Also because of poor attendance on Sundays, the Park Board recommended to close the pool on Sundays and to use it as a day for maintenance and cleaning, however, the pool would be available on Sunday evenings for pool parties. Lastly the Park Board is recommending the purchase of a new diving board as last summer, the old one was broke the last four weeks the pool was open and was not able to be repaired, finishing the summer without one. It is the Park Board’s belief that these changes, if approved and implemented, will increase revenues of the pool and lower expenses. The meeting was then adjourned.
