The Dent County Emergency Management Agency is reporting that bottled water is now available at the Bunker Fire Department, Lenox Fire Department, Jadwin Fire Department and Montauk Fire Department for those without water. There is no charge for the water. If you live in the areas still without power and need bottled water for drinking, please go to the Bunker, Lenox, Jadwin or Montauk Fire Departments. The Bunker Fire Department is also distributing boxed meals.

The City of Salem and Dent County were struck with severe thunderstorms and high winds on Friday that left a trail of uprooted trees and snapped telephone poles in it’s wake not to mention damage to people’s homes and businesses. According to the National Weather Service, straight-line wind gusts of up to 85 miles per hour came through Dent County at about 10:20 and then Salem at about 10:35 although tornado warnings were initially issued for rotational movement in the Darien area. The winds continued between 65 and 80 miles per hour for almost 25 minutes shifting from the west to the northwest and finally to the north before subsiding. Torrential downpours came before and along with the winds. Local reports of from 3.5 to 5.5 inches have been received in less than an hour causing flash flooding in the Salem, Montauk, Bunker and the Bangert areas with roads being closed. In Salem, the creeks rose so fast that the Highway 19 and Franklin intersection was impassable with over two feet of water flowing through the area and immersing vehicles parked in the United Country Realty parking lot. The water then flooded the Franklin, Hickory and Water Street areas affecting the Roberts-Judson Lumber Company on Fourth Street as the water poured through. Many Dent County roads and low water crossings were also flooded out. After about an hour, the waters had receded in most areas. Some buildings suffered damages such as H & R Block, Harris Glass and Schafer’s Furniture. The Dent County Courthouse antenna came down tearing a hole in the roof, the Judicial Building roof sustained extensive damage, and there was some roof damage to the junior high gym. The biggest problem is the number of people still without power in the area. As of Sunday afternoon, the city of Salem still had about 200 people without power, and Intercounty Electric reported that as many as 10,000 outages occurred from this storm with as many 135 poles down. They have repaired many areas, but there are still quite a few people that are without power. As of Sunday, they reported that there were still about 1,950 east of Salem and on Highway 19 south without power. They have other Missouri electric cooperatives assisting them at this time in order to get power restored as quickly as possible. They have also added an additional right of way crew to help with tree removal from power lines. On Saturday, it took 15 hours to clear a one-mile area in Gladden. Intercounty is asking for your patience, as mud is a major problem now in getting trucks into remote areas to fix the downed lines and poles. They ask that you not remove debris from downed lines and keep a safe distance. Do contact them if you are still without electricity at 1-866-621-3679, but remember that the phone lines are busy. The phone lines are available 24 hours a day. While power is a problem, many roads were virtually impassable with debris or trees. The Dent County Emergency Director Brad Nash called for backup assistance from the Rolla Rural Fire Department, St. James Fire Department, and the City of Rolla Fire Department to work with the Dent County Fire Protection Districts and other local fire departments in checking roads. The Dent County Road and Bridge Department worked all day Friday and Saturday in clearing roads with the help from the Conservation Department. The Department of Conservation Sunday received assistance from the National Forest Service, plus was able to get three additional bulldozers as well as log cutters from Shannon County to help with southern parts of Dent County. Work will continue on the roads to make sure that an emergency vehicle can travel them safely. It was reported that Dent County Road 3250 off of Highway 68 was impassable with a huge hole in the road.

The Salem Track teams will host the Salem Open today starting at 4:00, and the Salem Tennis team will host the School of the Osage.

Colby Rasmus' RBI double in the 10th inning capped a roller-coaster of a game, helping the Cardinals salvage the finale of a three-game set with an 8-7 victory over the Reds. Rasmus finished with two hits and two RBI, Albert Pujols homered and scored three runs, and Chris Duncan drove in three during a 2-for-5 effort at the plate for St. Louis, which had lost five of seven. Ryan Franklin (1-0) was credited with the win despite allowing two home runs that tied the game in the ninth. Chris Perez retired pinch-hitter Paul Janish with the bases loaded in the 10th to pick up his first save of the year. The Cards are off today.

Chone Figgins knocked in the go-ahead run during a seventh-inning rally and Torii Hunter made a game-saving catch as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim clipped Kansas City, 4-3, in the finale of a three-game weekend series. Mark Teahen finished 2-for-4 with a run driven in for the Royals, who had won six consecutive games prior to this weekend. Alberto Callaspo and Miguel Olivo also knocked in a run each in defeat. Jamey Wright (0-1) was charged with two hits and three runs (one earned) over one inning for the loss. Kyle Davies had limited the Angels to one run and three hits over six-plus frames. The Royals will take today off.

The St. Louis Rams have released linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, the team's leading tackler last season. Tinoisamoa made 135 tackles, including 88 solo, last season. He also notched three sacks.

The Kansas City Chiefs named Denny Thum as president of the organization. Team chairman Clark Hunt made the announcement on Friday.

Funeral services for Clyde Moser Dent of Salem, age 88, will be held Wednesday at 3:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 1;00 to 3;00 on Wednesday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Full military Honors will be held at the cemetery and memorials may be made to the Ministry Southwest Special Care Homes.

Funeral services for Pauline Nickles of Belleville, Illinois, age 91, will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Mount Hermon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Animal Shelter.

Graveside services for Bessie Stienbarger of Rolla, age 98, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 Licking Cemetery with Rev. Perry Lewis and Rev. Chris Gary officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Mrs. Pat Edwards of Licking, age 77, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor Kettner officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Salem Lutheran Church. Interment will be in the Boone Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Lutheran Missions. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the William Andrews Civil Engineering Scholarship at MST, First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Rolla Kiwanis club or charity of you choice.
