The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. Don Parker was in attendance to talk about Dent County Road 2400. He indicated that the road was in pretty bad shape and even though materials have been added and spot grading has been done, it is not enough and the road needs some extensive work. This county road does go through both Districts 1 and 2. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams came in with the sales tax receipts in May. She said that the monies received for General Revenue in May of 2013 were $3,058.56 more then in May of 2012, but year to date, the sales tax dollars are down $11,518.76 from the same time period last year. That amount comes to a 3.75% decrease in sales tax receipts from the state for the first five months of the year. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that is actually a total loss of income to the county of almost $23,000 since the Law Enforcement Sales Tax is also a ½ cent tax and when sales tax figures are down, it affects both funds. In the road reports District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell and District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that the road crews worked Wednesday to take advantage of the good weather to grade as much as they could. Since Wednesday was Truman’s Day and was supposed to be a day off for the road crews, they took Thursday off to make up for the missed day off. Larson did state that extensive work has been done in the last few days on Dent County Road 4283 including the installation of culverts. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

A total of 45 citations and 18 warnings issued as a result of a sobriety checkpoint held on U.S. Highway 63, approximately one-half mile north of the Rolla city limits on Monday, May 6th. The enforcement totals for the project were: one citation for a DWI, three citations for misdemeanor drug violations, 23 citations for seat belt violations, one citation for a child restraint violation, four citations for driver’s license violations, eight uninsured motorists citations were handed out, three citations for non-moving traffic violations were issued, plus there was one citation for a misdemeanor and one felony arrest was made.

Hunters shot 42,220 turkeys during Missouri’s regular spring turkey season. That is an increase of 1,773, or 4 percent, from 2012. Top harvest counties during the regular spring turkey season April 15th through May 5th were Franklin with 996 birds checked, Texas with 879, and  Callaway with 710. This year’s spring turkey season was the safest on record, with only one firearms-related hunting incident reported. That incident was nonfatal and occurred during the regular season. Hunting conditions were far from ideal, with frequent rain and below-average temperatures during much of the three-week season. In central Missouri, nighttime low temperatures averaged about 10 degrees colder than in 2012. The same weather station in Boone County reported approximately 1.5 inches more rainfall during this year’s spring turkey season than in 2012. Jason Isabelle, a resource scientist who oversees turkey management for the Missouri Department of Conservation, stated that this year’s increased harvest is the result of both improved turkey production and hunters’ dedication. Adding the harvest of 3,915 turkeys during this year’s spring youth season April 6th and 7th brings the 2013 spring turkey harvest to 46,135. This is 1,335 more than in 2012, a 3-percent increase.
