The Salem Baseball Tigers regular season comes to an end today as they host Iberia starting at 5:00 at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. Salem enters the game with an 11-6 record. Adam Wainwright threw six innings and Scott Spiezio knocked in two runs as the St. Louis Cardinals earned a 9-2 win over the Colorado Rockies in the finale of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Aaron Miles had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won three of their last four games. Wainwright (3-2) gave up two runs, one earned, and nine hits. He struck out four and walked none. The Cardinals had totaled just 16 runs in their previous eight games and they scored first for just the eighth time this season. The Cardinals will have the day off today as they head to the west coast.
Mike Sweeney's solo home run in the eighth proved to be the game winner as the Kansas City Royals downed the Oakland Athletics, 3-2, in game two of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Joakim Soria closed out the ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season. Mark Teahen went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Billy Butler and Shane Costa each drove in a run for the Royals, who snapped a four-game skid. Gil Meche started on the mound as was charged with just two runs -- one earned -- on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Jimmy Gobble (1-1) got the win for pitching a scoreless eighth. The two teams play again today.
The Kansas City Royals will get a pitcher back as Luke Hudson is expected to come off the disabled list. Hudson, who has been suffering from shoulder stiffness since spring training, is expected to start Thursday's game against Oakland. He made four rehab starts with Triple-A Omaha and Double-A Wichita, going 0-2 with a 4.41 earned-run average in 16 1/3 innings. Brian Bannister, who was supposed to start on Thursday, will be optioned to Omaha.
