The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their May meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the last meeting, the Board reviewed and approved bills. As of April 30, 2014, the district has spent 18% of the budget and has received 91.7% of the budget income for the year. During the same period for 2013, the district had spent 22.4% of the budget and had received 88.1% of the budget income. All budget categories are still within budget. In the monthly reimbursement report, there were a total of 25 calls for the month of April, bringing the total number of calls-to-date to 166. There were three structure fire calls, eight brush fire calls, three landing zone calls, two first responders calls, four motor vehicle calls, two mutual aid calls, one call for a utility pole fire, one for a meeting and one for training. In 2013 for the same time period, there were a total of 132 calls. In new business, the Board discussed Reimbursement Policy, which Chief Nash will be drafting for Board review. The Board reviewed and discussed the building use policy and insurance liability will be checked and reviewed. And the Board discussed running the reimbursement reports one month behind as so many times the Board meeting falls on the first day of the month and everyone was in agreement. During reports, Engine 85 was repaired and passed pump testing; the ISO has completed the fire survey. The main discrepancy was in the hydrant testing not being totally completed. There were recommendations for some equipment for the trucks. For the most part the survey went well and the final results will be in 6-18 months. It was also noted that the new turnout gear that was ordered came in but is incorrect, so it has to be sent off and redone. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, June 3^rd at the fire station at 6:00.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of April. During the month, they wrote 10 equipment repair orders, 15 summons to appear in court, nine warning tickets, and 14 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 19 accidents, four assaults, three burglaries, three reports of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, five reports of domestic violence, one report of driving while drugged, one report of driving while intoxicated, one report of DWI and/or drug intoxication persistent offender, one report of a false report, one report of financial exploitation of the elderly and/or disabled, two reports of leaving the scene of an accident, and one report of a lost and/or stolen license plate. The department also investigated one report for open containers, two reports of property damage, one report of resisting and/or interfering with arrest, two reports of stalking, 11 reports of stealing, one report of violation of an exparte and/or full order of protection and one 96 hour commitment. They also investigated one report of distributing/delivery/ manufacturing/producing/possession of a controlled substance, one report of distribution of a controlled substance near schools, two reports of possession of amphetamine, four reports of possession of marijuana and three reports of possession of drug paraphernalia.  The police department received 1,649 calls for service during the month, handled 120 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 65 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 12 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff, spent 24 hours teaching D.A.R.E. and collected 31 pounds of medicines during the DEA Drug Take Back. The calls in April included 14 calls for escorts, two calls for an intoxicated driver, two calls for prowlers, six calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, six intoxicated pedestrian calls, 15 calls for domestic disputes, and eight calls for a wrecker. There were 10 911 calls, 11 calls for a peace disturbance, four calls for alarms sounding, three calls for fights in progress, 12 ambulance assist calls, one fire call and one call for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 8,421 miles and arrested 18 males and 11 females during the month of April.

The Salem Tiger/Sullivan Eagle baseball game Thursday afternoon in Salem was rained out in the top of the 2^nd inning with Salem leading, 2-0. The game will not be rescheduled. Salem will host Union next Tuesday at 4:30 in a game that was added late to the schedule. Salem is 8-11 on the year.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded 3^rd in the Class 4, District 9 Tournament that will begin on Saturday, May 17^th at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. The first game will be at 1:00 between St. James and Osage, while the second game will be at 3:30 and pit Salem vs Owensville. Then on Monday, the winner of the St. James -Osage game will play Sullivan at 4:00 Monday, May 19th; and the winner of the Salem-Owensville game will play Eldon at 6:30 Monday, the 19th. The championship game will be held on Wednesday, May 21st at 4:30. The admission price to reach game is $4.00 per person who is six years old and above.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will be in Pittsburgh tonight to start a three-game series against the Pirates. The Cardinals are 18-17 on the year and four games behind the Brewers for the lead in the NL Central. You can hear tonight’s game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 5:30.

Hisashi Iwakuma tossed eight scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners shut out the Kansas City Royals, 1-0, in the opener of a four-game set. Danny Duffy took the loss after allowing just one run on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts across six-plus innings for the Royals, who have lost six of their last eight. The Royals and Mariners play again tonight.

Funeral services for Steven Ernest Broyles of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Everett Royal Taylor of Salem, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem with full military honors.

Funeral services for Martha L. Paulsen of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 68, will be held Wednesday, May 14^th 3:00 pm at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

There will be no funeral services for Darrel M. Blevins of Salem, age 75. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no funeral services for Charles McClain of Licking, age 64. Arrangements under direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
