The Winner's Circle, a local cancer support group, met for its first public meeting on Thursday, May 4th at the Lifeway Center in Salem. With a hand full of people in attendance, PROJECT WIN has officially been launched. PROJECT WIN is a support group that has been formed for those who have had in the past or currently have cancer as well as their caregivers, family and friends and their children as well. PROJECT WIN will meet every Thursday night at 6:00 pm at the Lifeway Center located at 201 Highway 19 North in Salem. The Winner's Circle was established for those that need support without having to drive long distances to other support groups. The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of April. During the month, they wrote seven equipment repair orders, 14 summons to appear in court, seven warning tickets, and nine traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 11 accidents, three assaults, three burglaries, three reports of disorderly conduct, two reports of domestic assault, one report of domestic violence, one report of driving while intoxicated, two reports of driving while drivers license is suspended or revoked, one report of forgery, one report of harassment, and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. The department also investigated one report of a lost or stolen plate, one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants, one report of a missing or runaway juvenile, four reports of property damage, one report of rape, one report of stalking, 14 reports of stealing, one report of unlawful use of a weapon and one 96-hour hold commitment. The Salem Police Department also conducted one death investigation. The police department received 1,767 calls for service during the month, handled 110 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 103 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 11 hours in court testifying, three hours as court bailiff and spent 18 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in April included 51 calls for escorts, three calls for an intoxicated driver, one call for a prowler, two calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, four intoxicated pedestrian calls, six calls for domestic disputes, four calls for a wrecker, four 911 calls, five calls for peace disturbances, four calls for alarms sounding, five calls for fights in progress, three ambulance assist calls, and one fire call.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 7,530 miles and arrested 15 males and 6 females during the month of April.

The Phelps County PHA, the local HUD housing agency located at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James, will be closed today, Tuesday and Wednesday for staff training. The offices will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 12^th. Using HUD’s Housing Voucher Program, the Phelps County PHA works with private landlords to provide safe and affordable housing to some 750 very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps and Washington counties. State offices, the Dent County Courthouse, and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), will be closed today in observance of Truman's Birthday.  Normal operations will then resume on Tuesday, May 10^th.  Anyone needing information regarding road conditions or other transportation-related topics is encouraged to call the toll-free MoDOT Customer Service Center number at 1-888- 275-6636.

With the requirements of stringent veterinary-health protocols met, the elk made a 12-hour trip by semi-trailer, arriving at Peck Ranch Conservation Area shortly after 6:30 am on Thursday, May 5^th. Missouri’s elk will remain in the holding pens at Peck Ranch for up to two weeks to allow them to acclimate to their new home. When the time comes to release the elk from the pens, workers will quietly open gates at night, so the animals can leave on their own when they discover they no longer are confined. Peck Ranch’s refuge area will remain closed to the public through July. Long-term plans call for hunting as a tool to manage the size of the elk herd. When hunting commences will depend on how quickly the herd grows, but Hansen said it could begin as soon as 2015.

An accident occurred at 5:01 Friday evening in Phelps County on Route B about three miles north of St. James. According to the highway patrol report, a 1971 Ford pickup driven by 41- year-old Larry Bolden of St. James traveled off the right side of the roadway. The pickup then struck several objects including a concrete culvert, MoDOT road sign, creek embankment, fence, and a telephone pedestal. This caused the pickup to overturn, break in half, and strike a tree. Bolden suffered moderate injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Ford pickup was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

The Salem Tiger Baseball Tournament makeup games Saturday were postponed due to rains. The Tigers will take their 11-5 record into the game today at Rolla starting at 4:30. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger’s Baseball Team is seeded 1^st in the Class 3, District 10 Tournament that will be held in Salem beginning this Saturday. Salem will draw a bye in the first round and face the winner of the 4^th seeded Cuba Wildcats and 5^th seeded Houston Tigers first round game that will be held this Saturday at 3:00. In other games, the 2^nd seeded Mountain Grove Panthers will face the 7^th seeded St. James Tigers at 12:30 Saturday, and the 3^rd seeded Ava Bears will face the 6^th seeded Mountain View Liberty Eagles Saturday morning at 10:00.

The Salem Golf Team will participate in the SCA Conference Tournament that has been rescheduled for today at Mountain View.

Kyle McClellan pitched into the ninth inning and Colby Rasmus hit a two-run double as St. Louis downed Milwaukee, 3-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set from Busch Stadium. McClellan (5-0) ended up allowing one run on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts for the win. Fernando Salas notched his third save by recording the final out of the contest. Nick Punto also knocked in a run and Tyler Greene went 3-for-3 with a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won four of six overall. The Cards will be off today. St. Louis begins a six-game road trip on Tuesday in Chicago.

Kevin Kouzmanoff and Kurt Suzuki had solo home runs to help Oakland beat Kansas City, 5-2, in the finale of a three-game set. Jeff Francis (0-4) took the loss in 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk in Kansas City's third setback in five games. Kansas City is now 15-8 at home and 3-8 on the road. The Royals will have the day off today.

Salem Tigers Boys Basketball Camp will run from Tuesday May 31st – Friday June 3rd.  Camp Times are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m for boys entering 9 –12 grades and 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. for boys entering 5- 8 grades. Cost of the camp is $30.  Camp forms will be sent home with kids, but if you do not receive one, you can stop by the JH and pick one up from Coach Zenker. Camp Forms are due back Friday May 13th so that T-Shirts can be ordered.

There will be a Girls Softball Clinic for girls going into the 5th - 8th grades next school year at the City Park fields or the high school gym if it rains. The Girls Softball Clinic will be held 3 Saturdays in a row on May 14th, May 21st and May 28th. The cost is $20 and the clinics will be held from 9:00 am until noon. The clinic will consist of 3 Saturdays of specialized drills and fundamental work that will increase your skill level.  At the clinic you will work on correct hitting mechanics to improve bat speed, and throwing and fielding mechanics that will help you to be a tough defender.  Game strategy and situations to help you understand how to play the game will also be covered.  Each participate will receive a t-shirt.
