Sgt. Tolias of the Salem Police Department has announced that a series of DWI Field Sobriety checkpoints will be held at various unpublicized locations throughout the month of May in the city limits of Salem. The Dent County Sheriff’s Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, or both may assist the Salem Police Department at these checkpoints.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports. On April 27^th the department received a report of a burglary at a residence located off of Dent County Road 668. Reportedly taken were two 27-inch televisions from the residence and there was no evidence of forced entry. On May 5^th while on routine patrol, a deputy stopped a vehicle that had been observed weaving back and forth on Route J. The investigation led to a 29-year old male being taken into custody for possession of a controlled substance, possession of less than 35-grams of marijuana, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and driving while intoxicated. A warrant was issued and Elijah Paul Whitten of Salem is being held with bond set at $7,000. An amendment was recently passed on the House floor to Senate Bill #156, 137-10, which will ban the NAIS (National Animal Identification System) in Missouri. Senate Bill #156 is a bill that modifies various provisions pertaining to agriculture. From the start, the USDA has touted that the program would be 100% voluntary, not mandatory, although other records and statements requiring 100% participation says otherwise. The senate bill’s final passage was 145-yes, 1-no, 1-present. A portion of the amendment read, “The department of agriculture shall not participate in any national animal identification system (NAIS) administered program by the United States Department of Agriculture without specific authorization from the General Assembly.” 

The Phelps County Public Housing Agency (PHA), the provider of HUD Section 8 rental assistance, will be closed today and also on May 10th and 11^th for staff training. The office is located within Meramec Regional Planning Commission at #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. The housing office will reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14th. The Phelps County PHA serves very-low income residents in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps and Washington counties. The MRPC Commission will be open during this time.

The Salem Spring Sports Banquet will be held tonight at 6:30 at the high school cafeteria where athletes from the spring sports will be saluted. This includes tennis, track, golf and baseball.

Scott Spiezio and Adam Kennedy each knocked in two runs in a seventh inning rally, to lead St. Louis over Colorado, 4-1, at Busch Stadium. Jim Edmonds added three hits for the Cardinals, who have two wins in their last three games. St. Louis starter Brad Thompson pitched five strong innings, allowing one run on six hits. Kelvin Jimenez (1-0) picked up the victory after pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. The Cards and Rockies play again this afternoon at noon on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter underwent successful surgery on his right elbow Tuesday. Carpenter, who has been on the disabled list for most of this season, underwent arthroscopy of his right elbow with debridement and removal of bone spurs. There were no unexpected findings during the procedure and Carpenter is expected to begin physical therapy later this week. The team has not announced a time table for his return although the doctors initially stated that he could possibly pitch again in August. After making his Opening Night start, the right-hander has not pitched in a game since.

Chad Gaudin pitched eight solid innings as the Oakland Athletics downed the Kansas City Royals, 6-1, in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Gaudin (2-1) was charged with just one run on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts for the Athletics, who have won three of their last four contests. Eric Chavez went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Nick Swisher drove in two runs in the win. Mark Teahen went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Jorge De La Rosa (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work for the Royals, who have dropped their past four contests. The two teams will face each other again tonight.

Funeral services for Gloria A. Donahoe of Steelville, age 78, will be Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Brush Creek Cemetery in Gray Summit.

Graveside services for Toney B. Hodges of Eminence, age 86, will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Wilma Craft of St. James, age 83, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the School Scholarship Fund.

Graveside services for Thelma Dixon of St. James, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the St. Lucas Cemetery in Sappington. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time at the gravesite. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Eunice Alberta Robnett of West Plains, formerly of Alton, age 90, will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Clary Chapel. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Graveside services will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery near Salem Friday at 3:00.

A memorial service for Charles R. Cox of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary.

A Memorial service for Violet Irene Lampley of Salem, age 85, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Robert Earl Bussard of Rolla, age 96, are incomplete at this time. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
