A special presentation on the 5th anniversary of the “Super Derecho” that struck Salem, Dent County and the Ozarks on Friday, May 8th of 2009, will be held tonight starting at 7:00 at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street. The presentation entitled, “Derecho! The Forgotten Windstorm that Changed the Ozarks” will be hosted by Denise Henderson Vaughn who will explain what happened, the magnitude of the storm, and the extensive damage to the Ozark forest lands that has impacted landowners, loggers, forest industries and natural resource agencies. Some of the worst timber damage is inaccessible, deep in the Mark Twain National Forest. It will feature a slide show presentation along with information explaining the lasting effects of the windstorm. This presentation is free and open to everyone. The Pioneer Forest L-A-D Foundation is sponsoring this special presentation. Vaughn will also have her book written on the Derecho available for purchase. Dent County Coroner Gina White has released a report. On Sunday, May 4th the Dent County Sheriff’s Office notified White about a body found at a Dent County residence. White responded to the call and pronounced 33-year old Megan Willoughby dead at 7:23 that morning. Willoughby was transported to the Boone County Medical Examiners office for an autopsy to determine cause of death. The body was then released to the Midlawn Funeral Home in St. Clair.

An accident occurred at 7:20 Monday morning in Crawford County on Highway M about three miles northeast of Wesco. According to the highway patrol report, a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle driven by 17-year old Alyssa Hellweg of Cook Station was traveling north, lost control and skidded off the left side of the roadway. The Volkswagen then collided with a dirt embankment, overturned and then struck a tree before coming to rest on it’s top. Hellweg suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center by Steelville ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Volkswagen Beetle was totaled and removed from the scene by Miles Towing of Steelville. 

The Salem Police Department has released more of their reports. On Sunday, April 27th at 12:30 in the early morning, an officer was detailed to the Walnut Motel in reference to a disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct. He was issued a summons to appear in court and as released. Later that night at 7:50, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary. The investigation revealed that someone entered a residence in the 800 block of East Ellis and took an X-box and games, valued at $440,and a child's spring horse, valued at $85. On Monday, April 28th at 3:47 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of West Dent in reference to a theft. That investigation revealed that someone took a blue electric Yamaha four wheeler, valued at $220, from the yard of a residence. That same afternoon at 5:00, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 500 block of South Warfel in reference to a theft. The investigation revealed that someone took a black and pink boy’s Mongoose bicycle, valued at $75, from the back yard of a residence. Later that same night at 10:33, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of a 40-year old Salem male on three active arrest warrants from Dent County. He was released to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and he was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Wednesday, April 30th at 3:46 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to Dollar General in reference to a shoplifter. That investigation led to the arrest of a 34-year old Salem female for stealing merchandise valued at $5.50. She was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. Anyone with any information regarding the burglary or theft reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Cory Ramsey's 7th inning bases loaded single brought in the game winning run as the Tigers beat the Bobcats of Thayer Wednesday, 2-1. Ramsey also went the distance for Salem giving up four hits and striking out 12 batters. The other Salem run scored on an error by the second basemen. The Tigers finished 2-5 in the SCA and they are 8-11 on the year. They will host the Sullivan Eagles today at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field Complex. Matt Holliday had three hits and drove in three runs as the St. Louis Cardinals grabbed a 7-1 win over the Atlanta Braves in the rubber match of a three-game set at Turner Field. Peter Bourjos went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Adam Wainwright (6-2) pitched eight innings and gave up just one run on six hits and six strikeouts. The Cardinals have the day off today.

James Shields worked seven scoreless innings and Eric Hosmer had four RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-0 rout of the San Diego Padres in the rubber match of a three-game set. Shields (4-3) allowed seven hits and two walks, while fanning four and giving the Royals their first ever series win in San Diego. The Royals will start a four-game series with the Mariners in Seattle tonight at 9:10.

Funeral services for Jeremy (JD) Bunton of Salem, age 33, will be held today at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bunton family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Steven Ernest Broyles of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Everett Royal Taylor of Salem, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem with full military honors.

Funeral services for Martha L. Paulsen of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 68, will be held Wednesday, May 14th 3:00 pm at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

There will be no funeral services for Darrel M. Blevins of Salem, age 75. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no funeral services for Charles McClain of Licking, age 64. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

There will be no funeral services for Robert Orval Feltus of Salem, age 90. Interment will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Nashville, Indiana. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
