The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. During public concerns, a resident from Dent County Road 3090 was in to talk to the Commission about having a culvert looked at that has caved in, and a resident was in from Dent County Road 3030 who wanted the Commission to address the fact that the road is impassible. Commissioner Larson stated that both roads were in his district and that he would be out Thursday afternoon to look at both roads. Bernie English stopped by to ask the Commission about the Sunshine Laws and then told the Commission that the roads are in the best shape they have been in years. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell stated that the new summer hours started this week and they consist of four, ten-hour days. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson said that rock was hauled for potholes on Dent County Road 4060, and a thank you came in from a resident on Dent County Road 4430 in the Boss area. Larson wanted to let the public know that due to the weather, the department is behind and he asks that everyone give the Road and Bridge Department time to get things done. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the TAC Subcommittee meeting on Tuesday where projects in the #5 and #9 districts were discussed. Salem is in the #9 district and a request from the City of Salem for sidewalk improvement was rated fourth out of ten projects. The MRPC was to then take the proposals to the meeting in Willow Springs Wednesday with MoDOT. Skiles also attended a Chamber meeting where the topic was how to better market the City of Salem for tourism. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley then reported that she and Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams balanced on all accounts for the month of April, and Curley also reported that all departments were staying within their budgets. All three Commissioners then voted to holdup on the letting out of bids for an office/lunch room building for the Road and Bridge Department until further information could be obtained. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.   

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their meeting Tuesday night. After roll call the Board interviewed a new firefighter applicant and after questions and discussion, the Board voted to approve Jeff Steelman as a firefighter. In old business, the Board discussed the drug and alcohol policy and with changes in wording being made, the policy will be presented at the next meeting. The training policy was read and reviewed on the changes made in the penalties and will be presented in final form at the next meeting and will become effective on that date. The attendance by-law was read and reviewed and a number will be assigned and it also will become effective at the next meeting. The Board discussed the USDA grant, which is still in the works with new information being provided by the USDA. During new business, the FEMA grant was discussed and it was decided to apply for a new communications system as the Federal Government has deemed that by 2013 all radios will have to be digital and narrow band. Chief Brad Nash reported that the new tanker truck has been painted and items are being addressed. The valve on the tanker is bad and will have to be replaced and will cost about $1,500. The Board then set the date for next months meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 2^nd. The meeting was then adjourned.

The USPS and National Association of Letter Carriers will be holding their “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive tomorrow where you can leave non-perishable items at your mailbox and they will be delivered to a local food bank. No glass containers or outdated food items please.

Grant Gordon was spectacular yesterday in throwing a no-hitter against Sullivan as he struck out 14 and walked two batters as the Salem Tigers won their 11^th straight game, 1-0. Salem only had four hits in the game and scored the only run in the second inning a on a hit batsman, two walks and a passed ball. Salem is now 15-2 on the year and they will be at Rolla on Monday.

The Salem Baseball Tigers were seeded 3^rd in districts that will begin on Saturday, May 16^th. The Tigers will face Hermann at 4:30 on Saturday and if they win, they will play the winner of the Owensville and Cuba game on Monday at 4:30. The Salem 7^th and 8^th grade Track Teams will have a meet today in Rolla starting at 3:30, weather permitting.

Todd Wellemeyer pitched seven strong innings for his second straight win, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates and a sweep of the two-game series at Busch Stadium. Skip Schumaker keyed the St. Louis offense with three hits, a walk and two runs scored in four plate appearances. Jason LaRue homered for the Cardinals, who had lost three in a row before Pittsburgh came to town. Wellemeyer (3-2) allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The right-hander was coming off a similar performance six days ago against Washington where he surrendered two runs on six hits in seven innings. The Cardinals head to Cincinnati for three games starting tonight at 5:50 on KSMO.

Brian Bannister threw six scoreless innings and Coco Crisp scored twice, as the Kansas City Royals notched their sixth straight win with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Aviles and Billy Butler each singled in runs for Kansas City, which sits atop the AL Central with an 18-11 mark. The Royals, who turned four double plays, have won nine of their last 11 games. Bannister (3-0) scattered just five hits, walked one and struck out seven to win for the third time in four starts this season. Ron Mahay and Juan Cruz each tossed a scoreless inning before Joakim Soria pitched in and out of trouble in the ninth to nail down his seventh save. The Royals will face the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim this weekend.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed outfielder Rick Ankiel on the 15-day disabled list as he continues to recover from injuries he sustained when crashing into the wall during Monday's game against Philadelphia. St. Louis recalled outfielder Shane Robinson from Triple-A Memphis to replace Ankiel on the roster. Robinson, who has never played in the majors, was batting .345 in 15 games at Memphis.

The St. Louis Rams acquired defensive tackle Orien Harris from the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday in exchange for running back Brian Leonard. Harris appeared in 14 games for the Bengals last season, recording 24 tackles.

Funeral services for Wanda A. Henry of St. James, age 59, will be held Sunday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Carr Cemetery in rural Crawford County. Memorials are suggested to the Carr Cemetery.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla.
