The Public Relations Committee of the Missouri State Teachers Association (MSTA) has announced the selection of KSMO Radio as the award winner in this year’s Media Award contest for general radio coverage of Salem R-80 board meetings and other school events. Only three radio stations were recognized in the state with the other two stations being recognized for covering special features. This is the second time that KSMO has won an award from the Missouri State Teachers Association as they were recognized in 1999. KSMO Radio will be presented their award at the MSTA regional meeting to be held this fall.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for calls in the month of April. During the month of April there were 31 total calls consisting of five calls for a structure fire, one call for a flue fire, three calls for brush fires, two calls for car fires and two calls for a landing zone. The Fire District also received six first-responder calls, five car accident calls, three Haz-Mat calls, one electrical fire call and the Dent County Fire Protection District conducted one training session and held one meeting also during the month of April.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving thefts, burglary and property damage. On April 23rd at 10:40 in the morning, an officer was detailed to Gas Plus on Highway 19 in reference to theft of gasoline. The report revealed that a 39-year old Salem male left without paying for $20.00 in gasoline. Investigation of the report led to his arrest and he was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On April 25th at 11:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a burglary, and property damage. The report revealed that person or persons unknown damaged a residence in the 600 block of South Elmer by breaking out glass and breaking holes in the ceiling. The damage is estimated at $2,000. On May 2nd at 2:00 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 800 block of North Washington in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person or persons unknown took a sump pump valued at $200 from the basement of a residence. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Salem Area Chamber of Commerce is once again sponsoring the “Yard of The Month” contest. This year the “Yard of The Month” will be recognized in May, June and July. The deadline to turn in your entry for “Yard of The Month” is May 24th. For June and July the deadline will also be the 24th of that month. The winner will be announced the following week after deadline day. Anyone can nominate a yard, including his or her own yard, by filling out an entry form at the Chamber office at 200 S Main, or by calling in the nomination to 573-729-6900. Be sure that street name and number, name and phone number of the homeowner as well as the name and phone number of the person filling out the entry are listed.  If your nomination is a rural property please include directions to the property. The winner each month will receive a $50.00 Wal-Mart gift card. The nominee must agree, if they are chosen as the winner, to display the recognition sign in their front yard and have a picture taken for the local newspaper. The “Yard of the Month” contest will be based on curb appeal, in general a well maintained and manicured yard, the use of colors, plants, flowers and decorations, as well as seasonal additions. Overall appearance of the yard is taken into consideration.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are scheduled to play at Iberia today starting at 5:00. Salem enters the game with a 9-6 record. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded 5th in district play at Sullivan High School and will face 4th seeded Union at 9:00 Saturday morning. If Salem wins, they will play the winner of the Sullivan and St. James game on Monday, May 12th at 2:00.

The SCA Golf Tournament is scheduled for this morning at 11:00 at Willow Springs.

Chris Iannetta's two-run triple off Jason Isringhausen in the bottom of the eighth capped off a four-run rally that pushed the Colorado Rockies past the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-3. Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs batted in for the Cardinals, who had a three-game win streak snapped. Aaron Miles went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Albert Pujols singled and has reached base safely in all 35 games this season. Isringhausen (1-3), Randy Flores and Kyle McClellan combined to allow the four-run eighth, allowing four hits and walking two. The loss spoiled a brilliant outing by Adam Wainwright, who shut out Colorado on four hits over seven frames. Kyle Lohse (3-1) opposes Rockies lefty Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) in the series finale today at 2:00 on KSMO.

David DeJesus and Alex Gordon homered and Zack Greinke tossed seven solid innings, as the Kansas City Royals avoided a sweep with a 9-4 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim at Kauffman Stadium. Greinke (4-1) gave up three runs on five hits and struck out eight for the Royals, who have won three of their last five contests. Mark Grudzielanek and Jose Guillen each had three hits and scored twice. DeJesus belted a three-run homer, while Gordon hit a two-run shot. John Buck went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. The Royals will face Baltimore tonight to start a four game series.

Funeral services for Keith Beamon of St. James, age 50, will be held this morning at 11:00 at James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. 

Funeral services for Charles “Art” Lewis of Licking, age 78, will be today at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking. Interment will be in the Craddock Cemetery.

Graveside services for Patricia M. Flett, of Salem, formerly of Australia, age 84, will be held this afternoon at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the SMDH Auxiliary “Wildlife Project”.

Funeral services for Mildred Booker of Steelville will be held Friday afternoon at 1:00 at the Britton Bennett Funeral Home. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Olga E. Haas of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at Null & Son Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in rural Phelps County. Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School.

Funeral services for Alma Lee Craft Hanks of Tebbetts, formerly of St. James, age 64, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Chapel in St. James.
