The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. At the meeting, the board heard from Patti Mabe about her dropping a stray dog at the animal shelter and now they want to charge her $45 for doing so. Mayor Gary Brown said he would talk with the president of the Animal Shelter Board. The board then heard from Gary Craig about the golf course property to be annexed that is for sale, and Craig says that they want the city to budget utility services for the property that would make it easier to sell. Craig said that an additional 30 acres would be made available for residential housing and proceeds from these sales would benefit the golf club. Chief Clifford Jadwin brought two bids to the board for new guns to replace ones that are 17 years old or older. The board approved the bid for 17 black Sig 1911 45-caliber pistols for $719 each plus 15 holsters priced at $89 each. Jadwin says that Cousins Gun and Pawn will buy the old guns and holsters for $5,101 that leaves a balance of $8,652 to be accounted for. The board approved making a budget adjustment to take the money from the police station roof fund to be used for the gun purchase. Mayor Brown said that there were no objections to the proposed annexation or rezoning at the public hearing. After the consent agenda, the board voted Jim McDaniels as the President of the Board of Aldermen. Bill Huffman reported that the Planning and Zoning Board recommended the annexation of the 12 properties presented to them with three of them being zoned commercial. Huffman said that the board also recommended closing Orchard Street between West Third and West First Streets, and they recommended the rezoning of 203 North Pershing from residential R-3 to commercial. Huffman reported that the Planning and Zoning board officers elected were Sean Curley as president, A.J. Seay as vice-president and Keith Inman as Secretary. Alderman Jim McDainels asked about the batting cages, and he and the mayor thought they may be able to be put in the space between a little league field and Route J. The mayor will talk with Park Board President Doug Barnes about their suggestion. McDaniels asked about the fireworks and the mayor is supposed to meet with the Dent County Fair Board on Monday to discuss permanently placing the firework cannons at The Commons. McDaniels said that the city needs to clean up where the water line was replaced on Doss Road by the church and the dirt needs to be taken away from the electric poles. In the Mayor’s report, Bill Huffman said that about 2/3rds of the homes or structures that were on the demolition list have been taken care of or have been started, but one-third still have not progressed. He said to give them two more weeks before deciding on holding a public hearing on the properties. The mayor said that Fidelity wants to show a movie in the Salem City Park in the evening of June 16^th, and that the city received their seventh straight Excellence in Accident Prevention Award at a worker’s comp insurance meeting. The board then approved Bill #3095 that annexed the 12 new properties into the city of Salem, and they approved Bill #3096 that creates an ordinance that removes the restriction that only city residents could be on the Tree Board, the new ordinance allows any citizens of Dent County to serve. The board approved moving $4,000 from the police department’s building maintenance to the equipment maintenance fund for the purpose of upgrading their computer system, and they approved allowing Mark Weaver to attend the Missouri Municipal League’s Annual Summer Seminar with the city paying the registration fee. The board approved the bills before going into closed session to discuss personnel and real estate.

The Dent County License Bureau will be closed today in observance of President Truman’s Birthday. Other state offices may also be closed today.

The Salem Tigers outhit the Rolla Bulldogs, 7-1 in the game, but did not capitalize on their chances as the Bulldogs beat the Tigers, 3-1. The Bulldogs took advantage of a passed ball on a missed suicide squeeze attempt to score their first run, then used two Salem Tiger errors to score two runs in the fourth inning. Salem’s only run came on back-to-back doubles by Matt Whitaker and Brad Lewis in the 5^th inning. Grant Gordon pitched very well for Salem giving up just the one hit, walked five and struck out eight in taking the loss. Michael Martin for Rolla went 5 2/3rds innings and gave up the one run on seven hits and walked three in getting the win. Salem drops to 11-6 on the year and they will host Iberia Thursday at 5:00.

The Salem baseball Tigers are seeded third in the district playoffs that begin on Saturday at Sullivan. Salem will face Union at 4:30 Saturday afternoon and you can hear the game on KSMO. If Salem wins Saturday, they will face the winner of the Sullivan/Cuba game on Monday at 4:30 at Sullivan.

Troy Tulowitzki scored the go-ahead run on Brad Hawpe's bases-loaded walk in the top of the ninth inning, as the Colorado Rockies held off the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Ryan Ludwick and Jim Edmonds each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who lost for the seventh time in nine outings. Anthony Reyes pitched six solid innings for the Cardinals but received no decision. The cards and Rockies play again tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off Monday and will host the Oakland A’s tonight.

Funeral services for Gloria A. Donahoe of Steelville, age 78, will be Thursday morning at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Brush Creek Cemetery in Gray Summit.

Graveside services for Toney B. Hodges of Eminence, age 86, will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 at the North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Wilma Craft of St. James, age 83, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be Wednesday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the School Scholarship Fund.

A memorial service for Charles R. Cox of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the Wilson Mortuary.
