On Thursday the Salem Upper Elementary School will hold their annual Serendipity at the school entitled “Sweet Tooth” that allows students to experience a number of different things outside the classroom. They will learn about occupations like being a police officer, flower arranging, being a conservation agent, hair styling, truck driving, first aid and being a pharmacist; to also learning about nutrition, arts and crafts, sports, using GPS, being a clown, playing music and more. Serendipity has been part of the annual curriculum at the Upper Elementary since 1988 where members of the community, businesses, and students from the high school demonstrate different skills to youngsters to broaden their exposure to the wide world of possibilities that await them. Numerous volunteers from the community make the event a success. This is the 27th year for Serendipity that has grown from the initial program that was the brainchild of Ann Rouse and Becky Mitchell. It captured the Success Link DESE Best Practice in 1999. Coordinator Melanie Wisdom wants to thank all the presenters, donators, volunteers, community, staff and the kids for making Serendipity possible.
