On Thursday the Salem Upper Elementary School will hold their annual Serendipity at the school entitled “Sweet Tooth” that allows students to experience a number of different things outside the classroom. They will learn about occupations like being a police officer, flower arranging, being a conservation agent, hair styling, truck driving, first aid and being a pharmacist; to also learning about nutrition, arts and crafts, sports, using GPS, being a clown, playing music and more. Serendipity has been part of the annual curriculum at the Upper Elementary since 1988 where members of the community, businesses, and students from the high school demonstrate different skills to youngsters to broaden their exposure to the wide world of possibilities that await them. Numerous volunteers from the community make the event a success. This is the 27^th year for Serendipity that has grown from the initial program that was the brainchild of Ann Rouse and Becky Mitchell. It captured the Success Link DESE Best Practice in 1999. Coordinator Melanie Wisdom wants to thank all the presenters, donators, volunteers, community, staff and the kids for making Serendipity possible.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports. On Sunday, April 27^th at 8:14 in the evening, a call came in for residence on East Hawkins. A total of eight firefighters responded to the call. The fire was out upon arrival and determined to be an electric short in the kitchen fixture. All units were back in service at 8:35 pm that same evening. On Monday, April 28^th at 8:13 in the evening, a total of nine firefighters responded to South MacArthur at West Franklin for a general cleanup of a vehicle accident. All units were back in service at 9:00 pm that same evening. Then on Tuesday, April 29^th a call came in at 5:00 that afternoon to the Shawnee Mac Lakes. EMS crews provided manpower for a medical assist. A total of six firefighters responded to the call and all units were back in service at 5:16 pm. On Thursday, May 1^st at 7:00 pm, a total of 12 firefighters responded to the fire station for training from Ameren Missouri on natural gas safety and emergency response.

The Salem Police Department released reports. On Thursday, April 24^th at 2:35 in the afternoon, an officer was at a residence in the 100 block of South Pershing in reference to trespassing. The investigation revealed that a 39-year old Salem female forcibly entered a residence, assaulted a resident, and took a small dog. She was arrested for burglary, assault, and stealing. She was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Friday, April 25^th at 2:00 in the early morning, an officer placed a 25-year old Salem male under arrest on an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem at the Salem Police Department. He was released after paying the fine and costs associated with the warrant. Later that afternoon at 2:19, the Jr. High School Principal contacted an officer in reference to disorderly conduct. That investigation revealed, while a seventh grade class was on a field trip at the Salem City Park, students were approached by a 17-year-old Salem male who shouted obscenities at the school staff. On Saturday, April 26^th at 1:07 in the early morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation led to the arrest of the driver, a 50-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated and having an open beer container. He was issued summonses to appear in court and released. Later that afternoon at 2:25, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 100 block of West Dent in reference to damage to private property. That investigation revealed that someone damaged a mailbox and post, valued at $85. Contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242 if you have any info regarding the disorderly conduct or damaged mailbox, which are still under investigation.

An accident occurred at 2:57 Sunday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 49 about three and a half miles north of Viburnum. According to the highway patrol report, 44-year old Troy Jones of Cuba was ridding a 2004 Harley Davidson south when he lost control, traveled off the right side of the roadway, and struck an embankment. Jones suffered moderate injuries and was flown by Air Evac to Mercy in Creve Coeur. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Harley Davidson sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Mile’s and Sons Towing.

The Salem Baseball Tigers fell to 1-5 in the SCA as the Mountain Grove Panthers scored four times in the first inning, netted three more runs in the 4th inning and scored four more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning as they went on to crush Salem, 11-1 in six innings. Adam Ziske went 3-3 for Salem and Kristian James drove in the only Tiger run. The Tigers are now 7-11 on the year. Salem will complete the suspended game with Thayer today at 3:30 at the SHS Field Complex. It will be the bottom of the 3rd inning with two on and no one out for Salem. Chris Johnson hit an RBI single in the eighth inning to help the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the second of a three-game set from Turner Field. Matt Holliday drove in the lone run of the game for the Cardinals, who had won their previous two coming in. Tyler Lyons gave up a run on four hits and struck out seven while walking one in six innings of action. The Cardinals and Braves play again tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.

Alex Gordon's RBI single was part of a two-run 11^th inning as the Kansas City Royals snapped a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday. Billy Butler hit a pinch-hit RBI double in the 11^th inning. Wade Davis (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win and Greg Holland made amends for blowing a save on Monday night by firing a scoreless 11^th for his eighth save of the season. Salvador Perez homered for Kansas City, which saw starter Jeremy Guthrie receive a no-decision after eight innings of one-run ball. The Royals and Padres play again this afternoon at 2:40 in the finale of their three-game series.

Funeral services for Dormalee Morrison of Union, age 73, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery in Dillard.

Funeral services for Jeremy (JD) Bunton of Salem, age 33, will be held Thursday at 2:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Asher Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bunton family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Steven Ernest Broyles of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.

Funeral services for Everett Royal Taylor of Salem, age 82, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Salem with full military honors.

Funeral services for Martha L. Paulsen of Sun City Center, Florida, formerly of Salem, age 68, will be held Wednesday, May 14^th 3:00 pm at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

There will be no funeral services for Darrel M. Blevins of Salem, age 75. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no funeral services for Charles McClain of Licking, age 64. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.
