The Planning & Zoning Board will conduct a public hearing and meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 6:15 pm regarding vacating a portion of a 20-foot alley between North Washington and North Main Street owned by Bill Stack and the Lifeway Center; the rezoning of 307 North McArthur Avenue, owned by Joe Dent from Residential R-3 to Commercial; the de-annexation of the Spring Creek Golf Club, Inc. property at Highway J72 and a conditional use permit for 307 North McArthur Avenue owned by Joe Dent for a car lot. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their meeting starting at 7:00 pm. In bids, the City requested bids for the purchase of two storm warning sirens rated for 150 Mph wind speed and Omni-directional and the City requested proposals for the complete removal and demolition of a building located at 808 East Jack Street. City Attorney William Camm Seay will then update the Board on the Planning and Zoning public hearing and meeting held prior to the Alderman meeting. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will update the Board on items concerning the City, and Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman will update the Board on completed, present and future project and departments. Alderman Jerry Randell, Kenneth Nash, Haydn Powell and Philip Giacomelli will discuss items concerning the City and Mayor Gary Brown will be updating the Board on various issues. During the Introduction and Reading of Bills and Resolutions, Bill #3253, an ordinance amending Chapter 2, Article III, Sections 2-109 and 2-115 of the Code of Ordinances of the City pertaining to the position of City Treasurer will be presented as requested by the Board of Alderman. In New and Miscellaneous Business, Lucas will discuss with the Board the proposed walking trail, and Mayor Brown had a request to close MacArthur Avenue during Halloween for safety reasons. The Board will then adjourn the regular meeting and go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, litigation and personnel. The public hearing and meeting of the Planning & Zoning Commission and the regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman are open to the public.

Armyworms have been causing problems for farmers in Arkansas and southern Missouri for the past several weeks and have recently been found in Dent County. This means forage producers should start scouting for armyworms immediately. Rank or dense fields of grasses and wheat are the common infestation sites for the true armyworms. Scouting for true armyworms is best done at dusk or during early morning hours since armyworm larvae are mainly nocturnal feeders and will usually remain hidden on bright sunny days. True armyworms have two characteristics that distinguish them from other armyworm’s larvae: a white- bordered, orange line down each side of the body and a large, single dark spot at the base of each fleshy, abdominal proleg. The head color is tan to green-brown with dark brown spots. Length of a full-grown larva is 1.5 inches. True armyworms attack primarily grass crops (e.g. corn, fescue, sorghum, wheat) and weedy grass species. Insecticide treatment is warranted when an average of four or more half-grown (¾ inch or larger) true armyworm larvae per square foot are present during the late spring. A Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact for the Sutton Bluff ATV Trail System Project authorizing the implementation of Alternative 2 has been signed. This decision guides management of the Sutton Bluff Motorcycle and ATV Trail System, located near the West Fork of the Black River on the Salem Ranger District in Reynolds County. The area is just a few miles northwest of the community of Centerville. The purpose of this project is to construct connection trails in the existing Sutton Bluff ATV Trail system to allow users to move from one trailhead to another without traveling on Forest Highway 56-1. It is also needed to provide a means for non-licensed motorcycles to legally move between trails without loading and hauling. The decision is subject to appeal. A written Notice of Appeal must be postmarked and submitted to the Appeal Deciding Officer by May 11, 2012. Eldon won the Salem Tournament Saturday when they defeated the Salem Tigers in the last game of the day in eight innings, 6-4. Salem had defeated the St. James Tigers in the first game of the day by a 6-0 score before Eldon beat St. James in the middle game. Salem is 11-8 on the year and will play their final regular season game on Thursday in Salem against Rolla. It will be Senior Day at the Salem High School Baseball Complex where the three seniors on the team will be saluted.

Alan Benowitz missed the cut by one stroke while Ben Adams missed it by five strokes on Friday in Sectionals for golf. In Sectionals they take the top two overall teams and then the next 12 plus ties and the cut line was an 87. Benowitz shot an 88 and Adams shot a 92.

Dustin Brown scored the go-ahead goal and then sealed the win with an empty-netter as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the St. Louis Blues, 3-1, in Game 4 to complete the series sweep of the Western Conference semifinals. Brian Elliott stopped 16-of-18 shots and Kevin Shattenkirk netted the lone goal for the Blues.

Tyler Greene recorded his first career multi- home run game and drove in four runs, powering the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-1 win over the Houston Astros in the finale of a three-game series at Minute Maid Park on Sunday. Allen Craig also homered and finished with three RBI for St. Louis, which snapped its three-game losing streak. Adam Wainwright (2-3) tossed seven strong innings. The right-hander scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out seven to improve to 10-1 in his career against Houston. The Cards start a three game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight and you can hear it on KSMO at 8:05.

Robinson Cano hit a grand slam as the New York Yankees hammered the Kansas City Royals, 10-4, to close out a four-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Luke Hochevar (2-3) was touched for seven runs on seven hits and a walk in just 2 1/3 innings for Kansas City, which had won three of its last four entering the game. The Royals start a series with Boston tonight.
