Governor Jay Nixon’s plan to establish a competitive bidding process for all of Missouri’s local motor vehicle/license offices now reached a milestone as more than half of the offices have gone up for bid. Today, 96 of the state’s 183 offices are now in some stage of competitive bidding. The Salem office is now up for the bidding process. In Salem, the estimated transactions for 2008 totaled 28,501 and the estimated processing fees for 2008 totaled $92,851. Common transactions that take place at local license offices include renewing or applying for a driver’s license, renewing or applying for registration on motor vehicles, boats and outboard motors, and applying for titles and paying sale taxes on these items. The City of Salem Chamber of Commerce will hold their May membership meeting on Wednesday, May 13^th at noon at the Salem TCRC. The speaker will be Ron Leonard from the Missouri Career Center and he will be speaking on their Summer Youth Employment Program. COPIC, Central Ozarks Private Industry Council, is a private non-profit agency that subcontracts with the Central Region Workforce Investment Board to provide employment and training services to Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps and Washington counties. Lunch will be catered by My Place Restaurant at a cost of $8.00 and those planning to attend are asked to RSVP no later than Friday, May 8^th to be included in the lunch count. There will be Community Leadership Information meeting on Monday, May 11^th at the Salem City Hall Auditorium beginning at 6:00 pm. The purpose of the meeting is to provide vital emergency management information to Emergency Services, County and City officials, schools, churches, civic groups, child and adult care facilities. There will be information presented on current emergency planning, training, communication and resources available for the community. Administrators, directors, leaders and their representatives are encouraged to attend the provide feedback as well as suggestions to ensure effective county level emergency planning. The City of Salem Capital Improvement Committee will hold a meeting, called by Mayor Gary Brown, on Tuesday, May 12^th in the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 10:00 am for the purpose of the budget of the year ending 2009/2010. The City of Salem Capital Improvement Committee meeting is open to the public.  

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources invites you to experience an early 1900s picnic at one of Missouri’s most scenic state historic sites. The annual Old Dillard Town Picnic will be held on Saturday, May 9^th at Dillard Mill State Historic Site near Davisville. This free event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. With the red, water-powered gristmill and clear Huzzah Creek as a backdrop and bluegrass music played by the Missouri Mountain Gang filling the air, guests will truly feel as if they have stepped back in time at this annual picnic. Visitors will also hear musical performances by Jamin Bray.  Featured activities and old-time demonstrations will include spinning and weaving, horseshoeing, flintknapping, basket weaving, bee keeping, soap making and natural dyeing. Watch a strongman demonstration by Steve Schmidt, who specializes in pulling and lifting objects with his teeth or stop by the gas and steam engine display. Food and beverages will be available to purchase.  The first floor of the mill will be open with staff available to answer questions. Dillard Mill, located one mile south of Dillard off Highway 49 in Crawford County, is one of Missouri’s best-preserved examples of a water-powered gristmill. The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Special Meeting at the district administrative offices boardroom on Tuesday, May 12^th beginning at 6:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, in new business, the Board will address resignations and discuss the district facilities master plan. The Board will then adjourn and go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel. The Special Meeting of the Salem R-80 Board of Education is open to the public.

A Spring Jubilee will be held tonight at the Dent-Phelps R-3 School. The Science Fair winners will be selected and artwork will be on display from all grades in the gymnasium. There will be a Health Fair as well as law enforcement representatives, Lenox Fire Department personnel, and members from Air Evac in attendance. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will be in Sullivan this afternoon starting at 4:30 in the preview of district play. You can hear the game on KSMO radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem enters the game with a 14-2 record.

Albert Pujols his his NL-leading 11th homer as part of a 4-for-4 effort, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-2, at Busch Stadium. Pujols scored two runs in the victory and raised his batting average to a robust .364 for the Cardinals, who snapped a season-high three-game losing streak. Chris Duncan drove in two runs in the victory. Mitchell Boggs pitched well but didn't go the required five innings to record the win. Kyle McClellan (2-1) recorded four outs in relief to earn the victory, while Ryan Franklin pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save. The Cards and Pirates will play at 12:30 this afternoon and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Mark Teahen and Mike Jacobs both had three hits and drove in three runs, as the Kansas City Royals crushed the Seattle Mariners, 9-1, in the opener of a two-game set from Kauffman Stadium. Sidney Ponson (1-4) got the win after going 7 1/3 innings and giving up just a run on eight hits. Billy Butler had three hits and scored twice for Kansas City, which won its fifth straight. Kansas City won seven of its nine contests with the Mariners last season and was 6-1 against them at Kauffman Stadium. The two teams are scheduled to play again today.

Funeral services for Seth Aryan Sanders of Salem, age 4 months, will be held Saturday at 3:00 at the Lighthouse Gospel Tabernacle in Viburnum with visitation from 2:00 until service time. Visitation will be Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Hanson Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Seth Sanders Family.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the William Andrews Civil Engineering Scholarship at MST, First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Rolla Kiwanis club or charity of you choice.
