An accident happened on Saturday around 9:00 in the evening on Highway 32 about a mile east of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, 45-year old Cheryl Dake of Salem fell asleep at the wheel while driving a 2000 Daewoo, and the vehicle exited the right side of the roadway and then overturned. Suffering minor injuries was Dake and a passenger, 27-year old Kevin Sizemore of Salem. Both were taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by private vehicles. The vehicle was totaled in the accident and will be removed later by the family. Neither Dake or Sizemore were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will hold their meeting tonight beginning at 7:00. During the hearing of persons, Patti Mabe wishes to talk to the board about some problems she had at the Dent County Animal Shelter, and Gary Craig would like to address the board regarding the necessity of acquiring city services to the six acres of the Golf Club property in the process of being annexed into the City. Following the bids for the purchase of weapons for the Police Department, City Attorney Mark Weaver will report on the Public Hearing held earlier in the evening regarding the rezoning of 203 North Pershing. In unfinished business, the Board of Alderman postponed the appointment of the President of the Board until there was a full Board. In reports, Chairman Sean Curley will report on the meeting of the Planning and Zoning Board held earlier in the evening regarding twelve proposed annexations; and Greg Capps, Chairman of the Airport Board, will report on the their meetings. Alderman Bill Riley, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city. Alderman Jim McDaniels would like updates on putting batting cages at the City Park, the fourth of July fireworks display, the city limits extension, mulch at the city park and Treatment Plant, wants to report that the land in front of the Methodist Church needs fixing, and a complaint regarding a house on South Water. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments before the introduction and reading of twelve bills annexing certain adjacent territory into the City of Salem, and a bill required to change the Tree Board from all city residents to being able to have non-residents on their board. In new business, the Police Departments budget needs to be adjusted. They need to move $4,000 from Building Maintenance to the Equipment Maintenance for the upgrades to their computer system. City Attorney Mark Weaver is requesting approval to attend MML’s annual Summer Seminar. Weaver said he would probably provide his own accommodations so the cost would only be the registration fee of $120.00 for the seminar to be held July 13^th through the 15^th. The Board will then adjourn and go into closed session for the discussion of personnel, real estate and litigation. The meetings and the hearing are open to the public.

The Dent County Sheriff’s Department released their reports involving recovery of property, possession, stealing and a burglary. On April 22^nd, an amplifier and CD player reported taken from a vehicle earlier this month were recovered and identified by the owner. Two 17-year old males have been interviewed and arrest warrants are pending. Also on the 22^nd, while on routine patrol a deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding. As a result a 42-year old and a 37-year old male were taken into custody and warrants were issued for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after evidence which included a glass pipe with residue, a syringe and a baggie containing a Q-tip and four smaller baggie parts tested positive for methamphetamine. On April 27^th two weapons reported stolen earlier in the month, were located and had been pawned at a shop in Rolla. A 23-year old male had been identified and the investigation is continuing. On April 30^th the department received a report from a residence located off Highway 19 South concerning a stolen 20-gauge Youth Remington 870 Wing-Master shotgun. The shotgun was reported taken from a farm pickup parked at the residence. Also reported on the 30^th, at a residence located off of Highway 19 South, a Yard Machine 20 horsepower lawn tractor was taken from in front of a shop building at the residence. On May 2^nd a report of a prowler came in from a residence located off of Dent County Road 507. The investigation revealed that three goats were missing which had been penned in the barn. The Salem Baseball Tigers game Friday with West Plains was cancelled due to the wet grounds and will not be made up. The game on Thursday against Sullivan that was rained out will also not be made up. The Tigers will travel to Rolla today to face the Bulldogs at 4:30 and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com. Salem is 11-5 on the year.

Scott Rolen drove in two runs during a three- run fourth inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros, 3-1, at Busch Stadium. Rolen ended 1-for-3, breaking a 0-for-23 slump, and Adam Kennedy went 3- for-4 for the Cardinals. St. Louis starter Braden Looper (4-2) earned his first win since April 20, allowing one run on six hits, striking out three and walking two, over six innings. This was the first home series win this season for the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be back in action tonight as they will host Colorado at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Prior to the game, the St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Preston Wilson on the 15-day disabled list with soreness in his right knee.To replace Wilson on the active roster the Cardinals purchased the contract of Ryan Ludwick from Triple-A Memphis. St. Louis also purchased the contract of pitcher Brian Falkenborg from Triple-A Memphis and optioned pitcher Dennis Dove to Memphis. On Friday, the Cardinals announced the pitcher Chris Carpenter would undergo surgery on his right elbow and be lost at least three months.

Craig Monroe went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored and four runs batted in, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Kansas City Royals, 13-4, sweeping the three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Zack Greinke (1-4) allowed six runs on nine hits, while striking out one. He gave up three home runs and didn't walk a batter for Kansas City, which has lost four of its last six. Ross Gload was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in defeat for the Royals. Kansas City will start a three-game home series versus the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday.

Funeral services for Virginia Carney of Steelville, age 87, will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 at St. Michaels Church in Steelville.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3:00-8:00 at Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Toney B. Hodges of Eminence, age 86, will be held on Thursday morning at 11:00 at James & Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A memorial service for Violet Irene Lampley of Salem, age 85, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary.
