The Dent County Coroner’s office released their report involving a female of Salem. Dent County Coroner Gina White pronounced 24-year old Jennifer Renshaw of Salem dead at 6:22 pm on Wednesday, May 4^th. The Salem Police Department received a 911 call from the fiancée after finding Renshaw not breathing. The conclusion as to death is pending as an autopsy was to be performed yesterday by Dr. Friedlander in Sedalia. The body was to be released to the Wilson Mortuary in Salem per family. 

Dent County Public Administrator Larry Edwards was named as the “Public Administrator of the Year” from his peers at the Missouri Public Administrator’s Association recent meeting. At the Dent County Commissioner’s regular meeting held Thursday, the commissioners saluted and congratulated Edwards for his efforts in representing Dent County and his 11 years of service as Public Administrator. In the road report, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 4080, 5150, 6210, 6230, 6590 and 6610. He said brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6210 and 6220, and that patching was being done on several of chip and seal roads including Dent County Road 4110. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 2180, 2183, 2185, 2190,4050, 4055 and 4430 with materials also being added to Dent County Roads 2190, 4055 and 4430. Larson reported that brush was being cut on Dent County Roads 3250, 3253 and 3255, and workers are servicing dump truck #118. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended an Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management Board meeting Tuesday where they approved the annual budget, and also approved the release of the district grant packet where he said that it appears that about $150,000 will be available for grants for recycling and waste reduction. Those packets are due by September 2^nd. He said that in the Earth Day Poster Contest held every year, there were 389 posters submitted and 95 trash art projects. Skiles stated that the New Harmony Christian Academy had six winners from the entries. The commissioners then saluted the Salem Baseball Tigers and Salem Track Tigers for winning the South Central Association Conference championships.  At the last meeting, the clerk took phone bids for fuel for the Road and Bridge Department. The low bid for fuel went to MFA Oil Company for $3.30 per gallon for unleaded fuel and $3.43 for diesel. The county courthouse will be closed on Monday for Truman’s Birthday so the next commissioner meeting will be held Thursday, May 12^th at 9:00 and that meeting will be open to the public.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday, May 3^rd at the fire station. After approval of the agenda, there was a review of the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were paid and file copies were signed and the Board then had a calendar review and approval. There were a total of 40 calls that were completed for the month of April. Chief Brad Nash then reported that the FEMA Grant is in the works and a committee was formed to review and research the spending of the grant money to get the best use of the money for the Department, both now and in the future so as not to place the Department in any kind of degraded mode during the upgrade. The Communications Grant will have 3 phases with phase 1 being implemented now for mobile radios and repeaters. Phase 1 is expected to be complete sometime in next month. Assistant Chief Floyd then reported on the status of trucks and equipment. The meeting was then adjourned.

Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Montauk State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. This event will be held 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 7^th at Montauk State Park. The event is being sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation in cooperation with Missouri Department of Natural Resources. At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under can pick up their free trout tag at the hatchery office from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, May 6^th or on the day of the event.  The spring branch from the CCC Spillway to the Social Hole will be reserved for the youth anglers and stocked with trout all day. Volunteers will be on hand to help out. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to help the kids, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on topics related to trout fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and other topics. Connor Stroburg finished 28th overall and Alan Benowitz finished tied for 44th overall Thursday at Dalhousie Country Club in Cape Girardeau in the Class 3 Section One Golf Tournament. Both failed to qualify for the State Tournament that will be held May 16th and 17th in Bolivar. The Salem Golf Team will play in the SCA Tournament on Monday at Mountain View.

The Salem Baseball game with Sullivan yesterday was rained out in the bottom of the third inning. The rescheduled game with Steelville scheduled for today has also been postponed. The Tigers will play Saturday in a makeup of the Salem Tournament playing Licking at 9:00 in the morning with the St. James/ Iberia game to follow. The losers of the games will then play at about 2:00 before the winners play at about 4:30. NOTE: The Salem Baseball Tournament scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.

Lance Berkman hit a three-run homer and had four RBI to help the Cardinals beat the Florida Marlins, 6-3. Cardinal’s starter Jake Westbrook went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out eight. Jason Motte (1-0) earned the win for tossing one inning of scoreless relief. The Cardinals play Milwaukee tonight at 6:40 on KSMO.

Melky Cabrera went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs as the Kansas City Royals dominated the Baltimore Orioles, 9-1. KC starter Bruce Chen (4-1) was solid in seven innings, allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. The Royals host Oakland tonight.

Salem Tigers Boys Basketball Camp will run from Tuesday May 31st – Friday June 3rd.  Camp Times are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m for boys entering 9 –12 grades and 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. for boys entering 5- 8 grades. Cost of the camp is $30.  Camp forms will be sent home with kids, but if you do not receive one, you can stop by the JH and pick one up from Coach Zenker. Camp Forms are due back Friday May 13th so that T-Shirts can be ordered.

There will be a Girls Softball Clinic for girls going into the 5th - 8th grades next school year at the City Park fields or the high school gym if it rains. The Girls Softball Clinic will be held 3 Saturdays in a row on May 14th, May 21st and May 28th. The cost is $20 and the clinics will be held from 9:00 am until noon. The clinic will consist of 3 Saturdays of specialized drills and fundamental work that will increase your skill level.  At the clinic you will work on correct hitting mechanics to improve bat speed, and throwing and fielding mechanics that will help you to be a tough defender.  Game strategy and situations to help you understand how to play the game will also be covered.  Each participate will receive a t-shirt.
