The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their regular meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 7:00. In bids, the city requested bids for the purchase of a new tractor mower for the cemetery and a new mower for the park. Those bids will be presented to the Board. After approval of the agenda, City Administrator Ray Walden will update the Board on items and projects concerning the city of Salem and Mayor J.J. Tune will then give his report. Resolution 5-2014, a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a contract between the City of Salem and Premier Pyrotechnics, to purchase fireworks will be presented. Mayor Tune will then make appointments to city committees and board with the Board of Alderman approval. In new and miscellaneous business Mayor Tune requested the Board to approve a period after board meetings for citizens to be able to address the board and City Administrator Walden is presenting a policy to address the Mayor’s request. Then, Resolution 4-2014, a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute an employment contract between the city and Ray Walden will be presented. The meeting of the Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.
The Dent County Sheriff’s Office has released a report for Thursday, May 1st. Deputies were dispatched to the 800 block of County Road 3030 in reference to the sudden death of a Dent County resident. The male was identified as 33-year old Jeremy D. Bunton of Salem. His body has been transported to the Boone County Medical Office where an autopsy will take place. The investigation is ongoing and more details while be released after the results of the autopsy are obtained.
Almost five years ago, on May 8th, 2009, a windstorm with unprecedented ferocity swept 1000 miles across the Midwest. It spawned 23 tornadoes in Missouri alone. In the Ozarks, the storm toppled trees on thousands of acres and some people’s power was out for more than two weeks. On the storm’s anniversary, a free lecture about its impact on Ozark forests will be held in Salem. In weather terms, the storm was a derecho, defined as a major storm with straight line winds, but the May 2009 derecho was different. In addition to the accompanying tornadoes, it had a center that rotated like a tropical storm. It was so powerful that the National Weather Service later nicknamed it the Super Derecho. The brunt of the storm hit sparsely populated, heavily wooded areas, and some of the worst timber damage was inaccessible, deep in the Mark Twain National Forest. A newly published history piece examines the impact of the Super Derecho on Ozark forests and the people who manage and depend on them: landowners, loggers, forest industries, and natural resource agencies. Authored by environmental writer Denise Henderson Vaughn, “Derecho! The forgotten windstorm that changed the Ozarks,” appears in Forest History Today. Vaughn will present the May 8th slideshow describing the derecho’s impact. The event will be held at 7:00 p.m. that day at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main in Salem. Each year area students and youth organizations come together with educators from statewide natural resource agencies for a fun, active, and exciting day of educational activities. This year’s event will be held at Alley Spring on Friday, May 9th starting at 10:00 a.m. This event is FREE. Local schools are invited to bring their 2nd through 5th graders. On Saturday, May 3rd, the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrested three individuals in Dent County. At 1:20 in the afternoon, 31-year old Amy Murr and 33-year old Kevin Taylor, both of Salem, were arrested. Murr was charged with misdemeanor resisting arrest by fleeing while Taylor was charged with failure to stop at a stop sign, a second offense of driving while revoked, misdemeanor resisting arrest. He also had a felony Dent County warrant for obstruction of justice. They were both taken to the Dent County Jail. Murr was later released, and Taylor was held on bond. At 1:33 that afternoon, 53-year old William Wood of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to drive on the right half of the roadway. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and later released.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced the roadwork that will take place in Dent County this week. Roadside maintenance will take place on Highway 19 between Route B and Route WW today through Thursday, May 15th. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work area.

The Salem Tiger baseball team will host Northwest at 4:00 this afternoon at the Salem Baseball Complex. Salem is 6-10 on the year and 1-4 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Golf team will be participating in Districts starting at 9:00 this morning at the Franklin County Country Club in Washington. The Salem track team will be in Ava to take part in the SCA track meet today at 3:00. Salem Tennis will play at Richland today at 4:30.
Yadier Molina's two-run single in the ninth inning was the difference, as the St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 5-4 win over the Chicago Cubs, avoiding a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field in the process. Mark Ellis had three hits for the Cardinals, while Randal Grichuk had an RBI and scored twice in the triumph. Starter Lance Lynn went six innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Kevin Siegrist (1-1) picked up the win after striking out the side in the eighth. The Cardinals will start a three-game series with the Braves in Atlanta tonight and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 5:35.
Justin Verlander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning as the Detroit Tigers cruised to a 9-4 win over the Kansas City Royals to complete a three-game sweep. Nori Aoki and Jarrod Dyson had two RBI apiece for the Royals, who have dropped four straight. Kansas City was swept at home for the first time this season. Jason Vargas (2-1) was dealt his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs on 11 hits over five innings. The Royals will start a three-game series with the San Diego Padres tonight.
The Kansas City Royals placed pitcher Bruce Chen on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging disc in his lower back on Friday in a move that was retroactive to April 25th. To take Chen's spot on the roster, the Royals recalled pitcher Aaron Brooks from Triple-A Omaha, who then sent back down on Sunday when they activated relief pitcher Tim Collins from the 15-day DL.

Funeral services for Dormalee Morrison of Union, age 73, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Sellers Cemetery in Dillard.
Funeral services for Steven Ernest Broyles of Salem, age 67, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be held Friday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Project Win.
There will be no funeral services for Darrel M. Blevins of Salem, age 75. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
