Members of the Salem High School vocal and instrumental departments traveled to the University of Missouri-Columbia on Friday to attend the State Music Festival. Receiving 1 ratings were Alex Bay for vocal solo; Amber Blaylock for clarinet solo; the mixed vocal quartet composed of Houlie Ibrahim, Mitchell Lo, Colton Malott and Kim Marino; and the girls' vocal double quartet composed of Rachel Arts, Hanna Bostic, Alexa Bragg, Houlie Ibrahim, Natasha Krueger, Kim Marino and Sarah Medley. Receiving a 2 rating was Shawn Bolerjack for a tuba solo. Congratulations to all the students that participated in the competition.

The Salem Park Board will conduct a meeting on this afternoon at the Salem Freedom Activity Center at noon. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash will give his report. Following his report, the swimming pool and upcoming season will be discussed. There will then be a discussion held about the 2010 youth baseball and softball leagues. The meeting of the Salem Park Board is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a warrant and thefts. On Wednesday, April 28th at 3:00 p.m. in the 800 block of North Jackson, an officer arrested a 52-year old Salem male on an active Phelps County warrant. He posted bond on the warrant and was released with a court date. At 5:05 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of Missouri in reference to theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took the battery and cables valued at $35.00 from a riding lawnmower parked on the carport of a residence. On Friday, April 30th at 7:38 in the morning. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took $160.00 cash from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of West Roosevelt. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 3:32 in the afternoon on Thursday, April 29th at the intersection of Highway 32 and Washington Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1995 Chevrolet C-1500 driven by Jackie Snider of Salem was attempting to make a left turn into the Mobil lot from Highway 32 as other vehicles while stopped and leaving a space in traffic for the Chevrolet to turn. A 1996 Chevrolet 2500 driven by Gary Haskell of Texas was traveling eastbound and made contact with the C-1500 as it attempted to make the turn across both lanes of traffic. Snider was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital. He was treated and later released. Haskell refused treatment at the time of the accident, but later sought treatment at the Salem Memorial Hospital and was then released. The Chevrolet C-1500 was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. 

George LaJoie, Program Director for the Salem Air Evac Lifeteam Base, was elected to the vice chair for the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (RHSOC). This committee was formed by SEMA to carry out Regional Homeland Security planning, including administration of Homeland Security grants. Region I includes Crawford, Dent, Laclede, Maries, Phelps and Pulaski Counties. The committee vice chair position is served for one year to learn the procedures and responsibilities of the chair. The following year the vice chair then assumes the committee chair position. The committee chair presides over the quarterly meetings and represents the region at the state level meetings and events. LaJoie is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the committee as the vice-chair and looks forward to representing our committee and region next year at the state level. Presiding Dent County Commissioner Darrell Skiles and Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS Director Debbie Hobson will also serve on the committee.

A Fence and Water System Installation Clinic will be held Thursday, May 6th at 3:00 pm in Dent County at the Ted and Ashlee Cunningham Farm. This clinic will provide a “hands-on” opportunity for livestock producers to learn the basics of installing both permanent high-tensile and temporary electric fence for management intensive grazing, as well as show installation of underground water line and tire tanks for livestock water sources.  Josh Wisdom, Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District Technician, Denny Pogue, area beef producer, and Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist will assist with the instruction of the clinic. The clinic is sponsored by Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District. There is no cost to attend the clinic; however, class size for the clinic is limited.  Please RSVP and receive directions to the farm or receive more information about the clinic by contacting the Dent County MU Extension Office at 729-3196.

Connor Stroburg earned 1st Team All SCA Conference Friday at a windy Houston golf course. Stroburg shot an 82 which tied him for 4th place overall. Aaron Harker of Mt. Grove was the overall medalist with a 77. As a team Salem finished tied for 6th place. Mt. Grove won the SCA Championship with a 335. Other scores for Salem were Ben Adams with a 101, Dylan Sisco shot a 104, Adam Wood finished with a 112, and Alan Benowitz ended up with a 115.

Carlos Ruiz's first home run of the season -- a solo shot -- won it in the 10th, as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, in a pitcher's duel at Citizens Bank Park. Yadier Molina finished 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the ninth inning for the Cardinals, who had won eight of nine coming into the game. Despite the loss, St. Louis' spectacular run of starting pitching continued, as Adam Wainwright yielded one run, four hits and two walks in eight strong innings. It was the Cards' 13th straight quality start. The Cardinals have 24 quality starts this season, the most in the majors. Blake Hawksworth (0-1) was dealt the loss after giving up the homer to Ruiz. The cards and Phils play tonight at 5:55.

Luke Hochevar surrendered just an unearned run in six frames to help the Kansas City Royals defeat the Chicago White Sox, 7-2, in the second of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field. Hochevar (3-1) allowed three hits and fanned three for the Royals, who broke a two-game slide. Seven Royals tallied at least two hits, including Jose Guillen and Mike Aviles, who each homered. The team racked up 16 in total. The Royals and White Sox play tonight.

The Kansas City Royals have placed outfielder Rick Ankiel on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain. They also released pitcher Roman Colon on Tuesday, allowing him to sign with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Kansas City Chiefs have signed wide receiver David Grimes.

St. Louis Rams have signed wide receiver Dominique Curry, defensive back Martin  Harris, defensive tackle Ernest Reid and cornerback Antoine Thompson.

The Salem Tiger Boys Summer Basketball Camp will he held June 1st thru 4th from 8:00 am to 11:00 am for boys entering 9th through 12 grades and from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm for boys entering 5th through 8th grades. The Salem Tiger Boys Summer Basketball Camp will be held at the Salem High School gym, the cost is $30 per camper and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt. Anyone interested can pickup a form at the Salem JH or call Coach Zenker. The deadline to register is Friday, May 14th.

Funeral services for Shirley Hedrick of Bay, Missouri, age 73, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Boss Cemetery.
