Members of the Salem High School vocal and instrumental departments traveled to the University of Missouri-Columbia on Friday to attend the State Music Festival. Receiving 1 ratings were Alex Bay for vocal solo; Amber Blaylock for clarinet solo; the mixed vocal quartet composed of Houlie Ibrahim, Mitchell Lo, Colton Malott and Kim Marino; and the girls' vocal double quartet composed of Rachel Arts, Hanna Bostic, Alexa Bragg, Houlie Ibrahim, Natasha Krueger, Kim Marino and Sarah Medley. Receiving a 2 rating was Shawn Bolerjack for a tuba solo. Congratulations to all the students that participated in the competition.

The Salem Park Board will conduct a meeting on this afternoon at the Salem Freedom Activity Center at noon. Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash will give his report. Following his report, the swimming pool and upcoming season will be discussed. There will then be a discussion held about the 2010 youth baseball and softball leagues. The meeting of the Salem Park Board is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a warrant and thefts. On Wednesday, April 28th at 3:00 p.m. in the 800 block of North Jackson, an officer arrested a 52-year old Salem male on an active Phelps County warrant. He posted bond on the warrant and was released with a court date. At 5:05 that afternoon, an officer was detailed to the 300 block of Missouri in reference to theft. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took the battery and cables valued at $35.00 from a riding lawnmower parked on the carport of a residence. On Friday, April 30th at 7:38 in the morning. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took $160.00 cash from a vehicle parked in the 800 block of West Roosevelt. Anyone with any information regarding the thefts, which are still under investigation, is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

An accident occurred at 3:32 in the afternoon on Thursday, April 29^th at the intersection of Highway 32 and Washington Street in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a 1995 Chevrolet C-1500 driven by Jackie Snider of Salem was attempting to make a left turn into the Mobil lot from Highway 32 as other vehicles while stopped and leaving a space in traffic for the Chevrolet to turn. A 1996 Chevrolet 2500 driven by Gary Haskell of Texas was traveling eastbound and made contact with the C-1500 as it attempted to make the turn across both lanes of traffic. Snider was transported by ambulance to the Salem Memorial Hospital. He was treated and later released. Haskell refused treatment at the time of the accident, but later sought treatment at the Salem Memorial Hospital and was then released. The Chevrolet C-1500 was towed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem. 

George LaJoie, Program Director for the Salem Air Evac Lifeteam Base, was elected to the vice chair for the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (RHSOC). This committee was formed by SEMA to carry out Regional Homeland Security planning, including administration of Homeland Security grants. Region I includes Crawford, Dent, Laclede, Maries, Phelps and Pulaski Counties. The committee vice chair position is served for one year to learn the procedures and responsibilities of the chair. The following year the vice chair then assumes the committee chair position. The committee chair presides over the quarterly meetings and represents the region at the state level meetings and events. LaJoie is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the committee as the vice-chair and looks forward to representing our committee and region next year at the state level. Presiding Dent County Commissioner Darrell Skiles and Salem Memorial District Hospital EMS Director Debbie Hobson will also serve on the committee.

A Fence and Water System Installation Clinic will be held Thursday, May 6^th at 3:00 pm in Dent County at the Ted and Ashlee Cunningham Farm. This clinic will provide a “hands-on” opportunity for livestock producers to learn the basics of installing both permanent high-tensile and temporary electric fence for management intensive grazing, as well as show installation of underground water line and tire tanks for livestock water sources.  Josh Wisdom, Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District Technician, Denny Pogue, area beef producer, and Ted Cunningham, MU Extension Livestock Specialist will assist with the instruction of the clinic. The clinic is sponsored by Dent County MU Extension and the Dent County Soil and Water Conservation District.
