The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse where both district commissioners said it was too wet to grade after the weekend rains. Both said that work crews would be out checking roads for washouts, cleaning culverts and putting up downed signs. Both commissioners also said that they are replacing a number of signs on several roads that have been stolen. Commissioner Larson said that replacing signs cost taxpayers money and if people see anyone stealing or damaging street signs, they should contact the Dent County Sheriff’s Department. Larson also said that an angle iron was going to be welded to the new truck. Commissioner Purcell said that rock would be hauled Tuesday to Dent County Road 6210 and to soft spots on other roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that the county has received a safety award check for $979 from MAC from their workman’s compensation coverage. Skiles said that he would be attending a TAC subcommittee meeting this morning and then attend the Jewels program this afternoon at the Salem TCRC. He then reported that revenues were down about $10,800 in general revenue which is 4.5% from last year for the first third of the year. He said that the sheriff’s department taxes are also down for the first four months. The report shows that the circuit clerk fees are down from $25,600 last year to $6,700 in 2009. The commissioners looked at putting up a new 24 by 32 foot building as a new office and lunch area for the road and bride department on Highway 32-72 east. They will put together the specs and let it out for bid in the near future. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that the courthouse would be closed Friday for Truman’s Birthday. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen’s regular meeting was held Monday night at the City Hall Council Chambers. The board heard from Jeff Meadows from C.M. Archer Group about a preliminary DNR report on the Spring Creek Branch. DNR is proposing changing the total maximum daily loads in regards to pollutants in the waterway.  Meadows recommended that the city contract with MEC Water Resources to provide a proposal to respond to DNR’s study. The board approved contracting with MEC Water Resources for up to $5,000. The board approved a bid from Verkamp and Malone to perform financial and compliance audits for the next three years at a cost of $9,750 for the first year, $10,000 for the second year and $10,500 for the third year. Mayor Gary Brown reported on the Planning and Zoning Board public hearing that was held prior to the city council meeting. No public comment was received regarding the subdivision of a lot at 402 N. Water and the committee took no action at this time. City Engineer Bill Huffman reported that the Planning and Zoning Board made a recommendation to the city council regarding the definition of single-family dwelling. The board approved having an ordinance drawn to perfect the definition of a single-family dwelling. Park and Recreation Director Greg Nash noted that 630 children have signed up for this year’s baseball program. He gave a full report on the pool usage and total participants in all the youth sports programs. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs presented an economic impact study of the Road Rally participants. Street Department Director, Benny Bryson, updated the aldermen on the need for a new fuel system at the airport. The Airport Board will meet next Monday to discuss the proposal.  Brown reported that Dent County has received a supply of vaccine for the swine flu to be used if needed. Brown said that at 10:00 on May 12^th, the Capital Improvements Committee would meet. Brown stated that the auditors are done with the first part of the audit. The findings will be presented to the aldermen in 4-6 weeks and then presented to the public at a later date. The recent surplus auction netted $3,911.50 for the city. Brown recommended that the utility committee meet to discuss the possibility of raising the electric deposit fee. Last month, a total of $11,484.93 was left unpaid to the city after final bills were received and not paid by customers. The board then went into closed session to discuss real estate and personnel.

The Dent County Coroner’s office released their reports for Thursday, April 30^th. At 8:34 in the morning, 29-year old Lori Jo Barbera of Salem was pronounced dead by Dent County Coroner Gina White in the 800 block of East First Street in Salem. An autopsy was performed and blood was sent to the AIT laboratories. Cause is death is pending the toxicology results. The body was released to the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Louis Carroll went 2-4 driving in three runs and Brandon Plank was 3-4 with two RBI as the Salem Tigers scored all their runs in the first two innings, then hung on for a 7-5 win over Steelville. The Cardinals were led by Pete Kraus who went 4-4 as they scored five unearned runs in the 4^th inning to make it close. Salem is now 14-2 on the year and they will travel to Sullivan on Thursday afternoon at 4:30.

Salem finished 12th at the 3A District 2 Golf Tournament held on Monday at the Sullivan Country Club. Salem was led in scoring by Connor Stroburg with a 92, followed by Robbie Brooks with a 100. Zach Pogue shot a 115, and Branden Piatt shot a 116. Salem's total was a 423.

Ryan Howard hit a long grand slam in his return to St. Louis, tying Mike Schmidt for the team record in the process, as Philadelphia downed St. Louis, 6-1, at Busch Stadium. Former Phillie Kyle Lohse (3-1) suffered his first loss after giving up six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks over 4 1/3 innings. Joe Thurston, another former Phillie, finished 3-for-5. The Cards and Phillies play again tonight at 6:55 on KSMO Radio.

St. Louis Cardinals have recalled pitcher Brad Thompson from Memphis (PCL) and optioned pitcher P.J. Walters to Memphis.

Zack Greinke was spectacular once again, pitching his second shutout and third complete game win overall en route to becoming the majors' first six-game winner in the Royals' 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Greinke (6-0) gave up only six hits, did not allow a walk and struck out 10, needing just 104 pitches to continue his incredible start to the season. In 45 innings this season, Greinke has allowed only two earned runs -- three overall -- on 30 hits and eight walks, with 54 strikeouts. His earned run average now stands at an astonishing 0.40. David DeJesus homered in the Royals' third straight win, while Billy Butler also had an RBI in the game.  The two teams play again tonight.

Funeral services for Melissa L. McMurry of Salem, age 34, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 9:30 until service time. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorial may be made to the McMurry family for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Hilda B. Clinton of Salem, age 79, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edward L. R. Hoyt of Sedgewickville, age 72, will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 at the McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, Missouri with Reverend Robert Henrichs officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday rom 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Ruseell Heights Cemetery in Jackson. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Family and Children Services, the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.

Memorial services for William A. Andrews of Rolla, age 86, will be held Saturday, May 16th at 2:00 at the First Presbyterian Church in Rolla. Memorials are suggested to the William Andrews Civil Engineering Scholarship at MST, First Presbyterian Church of Rolla, Rolla Kiwanis club or charity of you choice. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
