The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their annual meeting tonight at the T.C.R.C. building beginning at 7:00 pm. During the hearing of persons, Tray Crawford wishes to represent the Waste Corporation of America in presenting a contract proposal for the City’s solid waste hauling because the current contract with the WCA expires September 1st, 2008. During the bids, the city will request bids for sewer and water materials that are needed. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments on various issued involving the City of Salem. After the approval of the bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the board will then go into closed session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate, and litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem of Board of Alderman meeting tonight is open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving traffic stops and property damage. On April 17th at 9:49 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. The investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, 22-year old Ryan Mallory of Overland Park, Kansas. He was charged with four counts of a class “C” Felonies for possession of controlled substance except for 35 grams or less of marijuana, and two class “A” Misdemeanor charges for drug paraphernalia. Mallory is being held on $10,000 cash bond only. Also arrested was the passenger, 19-year old Martin Reynolds of Leawood, Kansas. He was arrested on four counts of a class “C” Felonies for possession of a controlled substance except for 35 grams or less of marijuana and two Class “A” Misdemeanor charges. Reynolds’ is being held on a $10,000 cash only bond. On April 19th at 9:11 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. Investigation of the stop led to the arrest of the driver, 19-year old Marcus Villa of Dixon. He is charged with one count of a Class “C” Felony for possessions of a controlled substance except for 35 grams of marijuana and one Class “A” Misdemeanor charge for drug paraphernalia. Villa is being held on a $5,000 cash only bond.  Also arrested was the passenger, a 19-year old Dixon male for possession of a hallucinogen and possession of drug paraphernalia. The passenger posted bond and was given a date to appear in court. On April 22nd at 2:52 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to damage to a vehicle. The report revealed that person(s) unknown damaged the paint and dented a green 1997 Chevrolet truck that had been parked at the Al Brown ball fields. The damage is valued at $400. Anyone with information regarding the property damage is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

For all livestock project members: There will be a MANDATORY livestock quality assurance meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 6th beginning at 7:00 pm in the Commons Youth Building. This meeting is no longer just for those selling animals at the Fair. New MO 4-H guidelines now require ALL members enrolled in animal projects (including beef, sheep, swine, dairy cattle, bucket calves, meat/dairy goats, rabbits and poultry) to complete a Missouri Show Me Quality Assurance program. If you plan to bring an animal to the Fair in August, then you must attend this QA meeting. This meeting does NOT apply to Clover Kids. Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, recorded seven traffic fatalities during the month of March 2008. This is four less than for March of 2007. In Crawford County, there were 33 accidents reported with eight injuries, in Dent County, there were eight accidents reported with two injuries, in Laclede County, there were 34 accidents reported with 14 injuries and one fatality, and in Maries County, there were 10 accidents reported with two injuries. Phelps County reported 50 accidents within their boundaries with 23 injuries and three fatalities, while Pulaski County had 33 accidents reported with 14 injuries and three fatalities. The total fatalities for 2008 are 13 as compared to 20 for the same time period last year. There were a total of 168 accidents with 63 injuries and seven fatalities, compared to 198 accidents with 83 injuries and 11 fatalities in March of 2007.

The Friends of the Salem Public Library will hold a meeting today at 5:00 at the library to get an update on the membership drive and to finalize plans for the book sale on May 29th through the 31st. The meeting is open to everyone.

Tyler Washausen went 4-4 with four RBI including what proved to be the game winning RBI in the top of the 7th inning as Salem beat the West Plains Zizzers Friday, 9-8. Brandon Plank went 4-5 and scored three times, and  Andrew Karr also had three hits for Salem as they improved to 9-5 on the year. Ethan Curley went all the way for Salem giving up eight runs on ten hits, hitting a batter and striking out three. Salem will host the Rolla Bulldogs today at 4:30 in their final regular season home game. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are seeded 5th in district play that begins on Saturday at Sullivan. Salem will face Union in the first game of the day at 9:00 in the morning. You can hear the game on KSMO and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Track teams will host the Salem Open today starting at 4:00.

Albert Pujols' lone hit of the night was a two-run double that broke up a tie game in the fourth, and the St. Louis Cardinals held on for a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in the rubber match of a three-game set between the bitter division rivals. Todd Wellemeyer (3-1) got the win against the club that drafted him, holding the Cubs to three hits and two runs in five innings, with four strikeouts and four walks. Four St. Louis relievers combined to hold the hot Cubs lineup to two hits and one run over the final four frames, as the Cardinals maintained their hold on first place in the NL Central. Adam Kennedy went 2-for-2, drove in two runs and scored for the Cardinals, who have won four of five. The Cardinals will be at Colorado tonight starting at 7:15 on KSMO Radio. The Cardinals did option pitcher Anthony Reyes to Memphis and brought up pitcher Mike Parisi.

Miguel Olivo hit a solo home run and scored twice while Gil Meche pitched seven strong innings as the Kansas City Royals edged the Cleveland Indians, 2-0, sweeping the rain-shortened two-game series at Progressive Field. Meche (2-4) picked up the win, surrendering only four singles, while striking out four and not allowing a walk. Joakim Soria slammed the door in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season. The Royals, who have won three of their last five, had five hits for the game. The Royals will host the LA Angels tonight.

Graveside services for Patricia M. Flett of Salem, formerly of Australia, age 84, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the SMDH Auxillary "Wildlife Project".

Funeral servies for John W. Koenig of Chesterfield, formerly of Rolla, age 87, will be held at a later date. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
